it seems that todd weisjahn has left orono, after becoming only the 3rd coach in oronos 50 + year history after only 2 seasons. a turncoat

I know this has been a possiblity for a while. Too bad for the Orono program. Any ideas on possible replacements, Spartan?

Russo and Sarner will likely be in the mix, and maybe Williams. <img src=

Orono Possible Coaches

I don't think either John Russo (Sr.) or Craig Sarner are candidates.

John Russo (Sr.) is too involved with the Elite HS league and is considering coaching in the league.

Graig Sarner is also coaching in the Elite League. In order for him to coach at the HS level, he would have to give up his head coach job with the Elite league.

I would look to see Sarner at the Jr A level or D3 in the near future.

Can't comment on Williams - he is not a head coach in the Elite League and could be a candicate.

My guess is that Puckguy is referring to Russo, Jr. <img src=

Who is Williams?

Ah, yes, thanks for the clarification - I did mean Russo, Jr. Williams is the JV coach at Edina, and well what would a coaching search be without dropping Sarner's name into it. <img src=

I heard rumors that coach Ryan from Blake will be in the mix as well. That Wiesjahn thing isn't final by any means, but it seems that it woulds make sense for Armstrong to get him.

Would like to see Russo Jr. apply for the job. He coached the JV team two years ago, and would of liked to help with Varsity, but Weisjahn had his loyalities to Lloyd. I also think he lives in Orono.

Matson

Orono lost a great player when Taylor Matson left for Holy Angels, but he made the right move it looks like after winning state, congrads to him

Relevance of Mattson moving? And . . . stability.

So Mattson went to Holy Angels last year. What does that have to do with who the next Orono coach will be?

If Orono wants a good candidate, they should recruit some quality people to interview. I'd have to think that they would have a decent field to choose from - Section 6A is pretty weak and Orono is always in contention to go to the Small School Tourney.

You can't blame Weisjahn for leaving. He teaches in Armstrong and the job should have been his the first time around. (I'm assuming he got the job!)

Should be interesting.

It would be best to find someone who has the potential to make a long term commitment to the program. Stability is very important at the high school level.

I feel that orono will need to find a good coaching team, wiesjahn tooled lloyd around and lloyd would follow him around like a little puppy! good luck to the both of the coaches.

Orono Coach?

I see the names Russo and Sarner being listed, but has anyone heard if Klaers is still involved or interested? He is a great guy, graduated from Orono, assisted in coaching and cares about the program.

Whatever happens, hopefully they will find a coach that wants to stick around and will develop the program from the ground up, using the youth program as a feeder.

Word is that Russo is not interested. He would have to give up his gig as a coach in the Elite League as well as leave a nice situation in Minnetonka.

Craig Sarner has joined Kevin Hartzell's staff in Sioux Falls and won't be a candidate for the Orono job.

Don't know about Klaers, but I do know that the crop of potential coaches for Orono looks thin at this point.

Any names that may resurface from their search two years ago? <img src=

Do you have any idea who then might be up for it if Russo and Sarner aren't possibilities?

That's why I say the list might be a little thin. I was having this conversation over the weekend with some folks that I would consider to be "plugged in" when it comes to HS hockey. We really didn't come up with much and no one had heard anything that was concrete enough that I would be willing to post it here.

Possible candidates that applied two years ago? Maybe Larry Olimb. Another name I've heard is Brad Ryan.

Very Interesting...

I certainly know of Olimb, but who is the other fellow? What has Olimb been doing the past few years? Thanks for your replies.

Olimb has been co-coach of the girls team at Wayzata with Amber Hegland. I know he had an interest in the Orono job two years ago. Brad Ryan is currently on staff at Blake and has a fairly solid coaching background.

I would think that a handful of current high school assistants will apply as well.

reports from orono have come out that kevin armstrong will return as coach. he apparently signed a 30 year deal worth $400 million, with a bunch of incentives and a no firing clause

He'll have to renegotiate that contract in a year or so.
