With February upon us, there’s not much time left to make moves here, though we did get ourselves the largest shake-up in the top five in a while this past week. Your rankings:

1. Edina (18-1)
-The Hornets reminded us all just how good they can be with an 8-2 undressing of Minnetonka, and once again set the standard for the rest of the state. They withstood a decent push from Eden Prairie as well, and it’s a reminder of how good they can be that we’re impressed when an opponent stays within two goals of them. They’ve got three games this coming week, including a respectable Centennial game and the first of two Lake games with their bete noire the past two seasons, Wayzata.
This week: Tues vs. #12 Centennial, Thurs at #11 Wayzata, Sat vs. Hopkins

2. St. Thomas Academy (16-1-1)
-The beat goes on for the Cadets in conference play. Now, finally, they have an interesting week. First they have rival Cretin in a top five battle, then rival Hill; while they destroyed the Pioneers back in January, Hill did show signs of life this past week. They wrap it all up with a visit to Duluth Marshall.
This week: Wed at #5 Cretin-Derham Hall, Thurs at Hill-Murray, Sat at Duluth Marshall

3. Duluth East (15-1-3)
-Like St. Thomas, the Hounds are rumbling through a softer part of their schedule, though they did put up some gaudy margins on a couple of teams that otherwise tend to play good teams fairly well. I’m holding them behind the Cadets due to some of those early ties, but if both run the table, I’d tip the Hounds into a higher State seed due to overall schedule and a tougher section. But, for now, they get a couple more games that should be safe wins before one of their more interesting section tests of the regular season.
This week: Tues vs. Anoka, Thurs at Superior (WI), Sat vs. #13 Elk River

4. Minnetonka (15-2-2)
-The Skippers’ march through the regular season skipped a beat in the ugly loss to Edina. After a convincing rebound win over Wayzata it feels harsh to drop them three spots, but the top four are just that tight right now, and they’ve lost their past two against teams in this class, and have been pushed around (to different degrees) in both of them. They have Benilde this week, followed by an Eden Prairie rematch.
This week: Thurs at Benilde-St. Margaret’s, Sat at Eden Prairie

5. Cretin-Derham Hall (16-2-1)
-For the first time in a few weeks, we have a new entrant in the top five, and they earned it in style with a 10-1 shellacking of Holy Family. The Raiders have now won 12 straight, and while I’m not putting them in the elite tier just yet—they barely also beat a Forest Lake team that managed 4 shots on goal against Duluth East this past week—they’ve made a solid claim as the best of the rest after this win and their win over White Bear the previous weekend. They have a chance to really shake things up when they host St. Thomas on Wednesday.
This week: Wed vs. #2 St. Thomas Academy, Thurs vs. Mounds View, Sat at East Ridge

6. Holy Family (14-3-1)
-Well. The Fire would certainly like to forget its encounter with Cretin this past Saturday, and it raised a lot of questions on defense and in goal. It’s just one game, so I’m not going to drop them much given their body of work, but suddenly, there are warning flags. They should win both their games this week, but both opponents are capable of causing problems if there’s any sort of hangover effect.
This week: Thurs vs. Lakeville North, Sat vs. Blaine

7. White Bear Lake (14-3-2)
-Twin 5-1 wins in conference play keep the Bears plugging along. Suddenly struggling Stillwater awaits next as they look to continue their run of success against conference teams not named Cretin.
This week: Sat at Stillwater

8. Moorhead (15-6)
-Roseau gave the Spuds a decent run, and even Rogers hung in there for a couple of periods, but they pulled both out and have now rattled off five straight. The St. Cloud game this week has some chance of being interesting, and could have some section implications.
This week: Tues vs. St. Cloud, Sat at Bloomington Jefferson

9. Andover (15-4)
-The Huskies just keep finding ways to win, as they scraped by Blaine in overtime and finished off Duluth Marshall, too. Their odds of the 2-seed in 7AA are looking better and better, especially since this week features their last two games from the stronger division of the Northwest Suburban, including a second clash with one of its other top-end teams, Centennial. The program’s first 20-win season in well within sight.
This week: Thurs at #12 Centennial, Sat at Maple Grove

10. Brainerd (14-5)
-The Warriors had a mild adventure with Sartell, but took care of business from there in their three games this past week. A road trip to Roseau is on the docket this week; the Rams gave Moorhead a good run in their visit, so we’ll see if there are any similar developments in this one. Every little bit may count in the race for the 8AA top seed.
This week: Thurs vs. Sauk Rapids-Rice, Sat at Roseau

11. Wayzata (11-7-1)
-The Trojans had been on a nice little roll, but a game with someone of a higher class, Minnetonka, did not end well. For now that drops them from the top ten, though I still think they’re a very dangerous team here. We’ll see how well their vaunted defense holds up against Edina, and a road trip to Grand Rapids gives us the prospect of a remarkably low-scoring game.
This week: Thurs vs. #1 Edina, Sat at Grand Rapids

12. Centennial (11-4-3)
-The Cougars have found themselves a low-scoring rhythm of late, and got an important section win over Maple Grove that should have them fully in control of the race for the 5AA top seed. The week ahead features no shortage of challenges: top-ranked Edina, an Andover team that humbled them in the first meeting in a game that could be key to a conference championship, and a team that tied them in the first meeting.
This week: Tues at #1 Edina, Thurs vs. #9 Andover, Sat at Anoka

13. Elk River (13-6)
-The Elks pasted Anoka, which is an improvement after a one-goal game the first time these two played. Now, Blaine serves as a prelude to an important section battle with Duluth East, which will let us know how much of a factor they can be in 7AA and could help them firm up a top-3 seed.
This week: Thurs vs. Blaine, Sat at #3 Duluth East

14. Eastview (15-4)
-A loss to Lakeville North sets the Lightning back a couple of spots, while a win over Eagan restored some order, and confirms this team’s spot somewhere in this section of the rankings. Conference play continues this week.
This week: Tues vs. Brunsville, Sat vs. Farmington

15. Cloquet (14-5-1)
-The Jacks took care of Superior in their only action this past week. The Forest Lake game has some potential to be interesting, and they have a fighting shot to take down Hermantown on Thursday, which would be a mental win for this program.
This week: Mon vs. Forest Lake, Thurs at Hermantown

The Next Ten

Rosemount (15-3)
-The Irish went back to their winning ways after falling to Eastview last week, and a blowout win over Prior Lake is an impressive showing. Lakeville South will offer something of a challenge this week.

Duluth Marshall (13-7-1)
-The Hilltoppers continue to sputter some down the stretch, as they scraped past Grand Rapids and fell late to Andover. QRF won’t like that two of their remaining four are with Class A teams, so the odds are now pretty good that they’ll be stuck with the 4/5 game in 7AA. They get one last look at a top-end team in the regular season on Saturday, when St. Thomas comes to play.

Eagan (13-5)
-A narrow loss to Eastview does little to change the Wildcats’ standing. It’s 1AA week for them now, with Farmington preceding two interesting battles with Lakevilles.

St. Louis Park (11-5-2)
-Took care of Holy Angels in their lone game. A busy week ahead includes a battle with Chaska, another team in this part of the rankings; they pounded the Hawks in their first meeting, but Chaska was shorthanded at the time, so we’ll see if this one offers more drama.

Chaska (11-6)
-The Hawks’ only contest this past week got snowed out. We’ll learn a lot about them this week, as they face St. Louis Park for a second time and also get a decent Benilde team. That Minneapolis game has also been rescheduled for Saturday.

Lakeville North (8-8-1)
-The Panthers continue to show hints of quality, as they knocked off Eastview for a second time, and they also scraped past Burnsville. It’s not always pretty, but they have managed to be competitive in every single game they’ve played. A big week ahead includes a chance to avenge a loss to Apple Valley, a visit from wounded but dangerous Holy Family, and a quality Eagan squad.

Lakeville South (9-8-1)
The Lakevilles seem to move in tandem these days, and the Cougars won two games they needed to win. With games against two teams right above them this week in Rosemount and Eagan, they have a chance to make a move.

Eden Prairie (7-11-1)
-Steps in the right direction for the Eagles, as they handled Stillwater and gave Edina one of its more competitive games this season. I remain convinced they’re better than this, and will have no shortage of chances to prove it before all is said and done. They get a second crack at Minnetonka this week, plus Blake.

St. Michael-Albertville (12-5)
-The Knights suffered a setback in Roseau, but rebounded with a win over Bemidji. The Roseau loss is their first defeat at to a team outside the top 25. They head on a tour of 5A this week.

Hill-Murray (7-8-4)
-The Pioneers restored some order after a rough stretch with a convincing win over Maple Grove and a passable result in Grand Rapids. We’ll see if the youth movement is enough to make any impact heading into sections. A rematch of their running time loss to St. Thomas now looms.

Rochester Century
Owatonna
-North won the battle of the Lakevilles two weeks ago, so that has the Panthers ahead of South for now. PS2 leaves me leery of giving Century anything higher than the 3-seed—they just tied Albert Lea, after all—but I’d understand the argument for it. The battle for the 4-seed appears very open; Owatonna has the best record of the teams in the next tier, but John Marshall beat them, Mayo has a decent win total, and Farmington and Hastings have to deal with much more difficult conferences, and Hastings does have a win over Hill.

2AA
4 Minnetonka
6 Holy Family
Prior Lake
20 Chaska
23 Eden Prairie
-The top two here suffered setbacks this past week, but their spots atop this section aren’t in any risk. The 3-seed, meanwhile, is open for debate. Chaska has the better record of the three teams chasing here, but they also lost to Prior Lake; the Lakers have had their issues, but with wins over Chaska and Eden Prairie, they might just be doing enough for the 3-seed. More blowout losses like they suffered this past week, though, could cost them that.

3AA
2 St. Thomas Academy
14 Eastview
16 Rosemount
18 Eagan
-Eastview has firmed up the 2-seed pretty well here after avenging its loss to Eagan. Rosemount is in the driver’s seat for the 3-seed, and even if they lose their second meeting with Eagan, I think they’d need to slip up against another section opponent as well given that Eagan has a loss to Burnsville.

4AA
7 White Bear Lake
25 Hill-Murray
Tartan
Stillwater
-The separation between the Bears and the rest has only grown here. The Tartan-Hill game on February 6 should settle the 2-seed. Stillwater’s recent struggles probably make the Ponies a 4-seed at best, and Irondale and even North St. Paul have some argument for climbing ahead of them.

5AA
12 Centennial
Maple Grove
Blaine
Champlin Park
-Centennial’s wins over Blaine and Maple Grove probably secure the top spot in this one. After that it’s ugly, with Maple Grove’s recent win over Blaine and early win over Champlin Park probably being enough for a 2-seed despite having just 6 wins. 4-win Blaine has enough respectable results to probably be the 3-seed, though a clash with Champlin Park in the season’s final week will probably settle that. Anoka, which is also in the ugly record club, could still poach a higher seed if they again get a positive result against Centennial in the rematch there.

6AA
1 Edina
5 Cretin-Derham Hall
11 Wayzata
19 St. Louis Park
-Edina is the clear #1, but we have some debate after that: has Cretin done enough out of the section to secure the 2-seed, despite the loss to Wayzata? For now, I’d say so, though that would certainly change if Wayzata does anything in its two games with Edina. Either way, those two are on a collision course toward one of the best semifinals in sections.

7AA
3 Duluth East
9 Andover
13 Elk River
15 Cloquet
17 Duluth Marshall
-This one is getting a little clearer, as Andover seems to be pulling away a little in the race for the 2-seed, while Marshall is flagging some. With the Class A games left on Marshall and Cloquet’s schedules, I’d say Elk River has the inside track for the 3-seed, though results by either the Elks or the Jacks against East could certainly change things.

8AA
8 Moorhead
10 Brainerd
25 St. Michael-Albertville
St. Cloud
-There’s a serious question about the 1-seed here. Moorhead and Brainerd split their two meetings and had the same margin of victory, and while Brainerd gets a little boost for the more recent meeting, Moorhead’s overall résumé is hard to argue with, too. STMA, St. Cloud, and Roseau are trapped in a transitive property loop of death in the battle for the 3-seed, so unless someone does something surprising down the stretch, good or bad, I figure they’ll finish in the above order based on overall body of work.

Excellent work as usual. Hard to disagree with anything!

I nominate the following as the best phrase of the season, by any hockey writer in any venue!

The Minnesota scores website also had the score wrong, but they may pull from Hockey Hub and don’t always seem to have the most accurate information (which is scary for 7AA QRF). That makes a huge difference for STMA, since their remaining section games are against Buffalo, Brainerd, and Rogers, all of whom are essentially locked into seeds behind or ahead of the Knights. Unless they completely crater toward the end of the year, STMA should be in pretty good shape to host their QF game.

Karl I think you should qualify the first defeat to a team outside the top 25 statement by saying they also have not defeated a team in the top 25. I think if you look at St Cloud, STMA, and Roseau you can't say one is ahead of the other right now as far as seeding goes. Between those 3 teams each is 1-1, each has a win over Bemidji, nobody has lost to Rogers or Buffalo, and nobody has a win over Brainerd or Moorhead. If Roseau or STMA beats Brainerd or if St Cloud beats Moorhead or Brainerd that team should claim the 3 seed. If none of those upsets happens, Roseau beats Bemidji again, and STMA beats Rogers and Buffalo again then I think the 3 should go to Roseau based on my thinking that two wins over Bemidji is better than two wins over Rogers or Buffalo(who are winless other than against each other). On the other hand if Roseau loses to Bemidji or STMA loses to Buffalo or Rogers then that team should get the 5. Any way that this goes there will be a team that beat another team and is seeded behind them. And I definitely don't think you can say any of the three teams is comfortably in position to host a home game. There are too many scenarios left to play out and the three are so close. It could come down to who plays the top two seeds the closest down the stretch and earns that team's vote that way.

Did FollowThePuck retweet either of those tweets? I follow FTP but not those two schools, so I (and PageStat) have that score wrong, also. Pain in the buns when the Hub screws up. Don't reps from either of those schools report to the Hub?

I have seen several inaccuracies on the Hub this year with East box scores - Shots and time of goals mostly. I comment on them, but have not seen much in an effort to correct them.

They have not corrected the timing of a Worth goal vs. Cloquet
Or the shots in the Centennial game - not sure if I have added any others, but the site could use a review process of some sort.

Yep. I saw it first hand last night. CEC didn’t have 1 good scoring chance. Lots of shots on goal but non of them any serious threat. Forest Lake played really well as a team. Will be a scary team to face in the section 7AA playoffs. I also was talking to a Forest Lake dad, and they have a really awesome freshman goalie in waiting. His jersey number is 1.

Winning two games and then upsetting DEast is a big mountain to climb.
I don't see it happening BUT
their goalie is good.
Perhaps not the best in the state but good.
Currently Brady Peterson, their goalie is #14 in save pct and #31 in GAA.

Champlin also has a great goalie who has been known to steal a game or two. A concerning score in terms of making a run in 7AA, but a 1-1 tie actually tracks with the way these two teams seem to play.

He/they would be the type to do it.. The team also has very good defensive minded players and a few top end forwards that can bury the puck. No other team out of the mix has these type of wins or have brought top teams to the final buzzer!

Winning two games and then upsetting DEast is a big mountain to climb.
I don't see it happening BUT
their goalie is good.
Perhaps not the best in the state but good.
Currently Brady Peterson, their goalie is #14 in save pct and #31 in GAA.

In no way am I saying they should be ranked.. just pointing out they grabbed another from a top team. Highlight the games they won or lost by one to top teams and it's pretty darn impressive.

They’ve probably moved into the 4 seed in 7AA.

They have played well it appears, but there are 5 games which make one pause.
Currently, CEC is 3 on QRF and FL is 6.
But on Page Stat Elk River is 3, CEC is 5 and FL is 6. I am inclined to believe QRF will be more in line with Page Stat at section time.
So FL may be in 5 and face Marshall or 6 and face ER.

The DEASt game and the loss to GRapids are at odds with what they have done.

and DMarshall beat them and ahead in QRF.

Maybe give them the 5 spot.

Make the last 3 weeks or so of regular season interesting.
