2018-19 Wayzata

The most controversial and unpredictable of all teams in recent years. Thought Id start a thread for Golden Bear and others to post perspectives, predictions and tactical Oleary tips for next season! Who emerges from bantams as top HS performers, and will they be high impact players in their first year? Top 10 team or lower Top 20?

Most controversial team? That's an interesting angle to start the season with.

WM, like last year I will see about a dozen of their games next year. They will obviously miss Ness and Schmidt as well as many seniors who contributed. They will be very similar to this year, will battle Cretin and Edina. It will start with senior leadership--captain Joel Mathews.

In a nutshell, they have two goalies coming back Wong and Fraga that can carry a squad deep into the playoffs. They will have two definite bantams that will be good contributors, maybe three. I don't want to give names but I think anyone who has watched the bantams know.

They will again be lead by seniors. The blue line has a blue chipper in Berglands (alternate capt). I like this kid. Another defensemen I like is North (alternate capt), he plays with a nice chip on his shoulder.

To me one of the keys will be what Mulrein does. Lot's of talent and this needs to be a break out year for him. He is just a junior but can do a lot of things. Other kids that need to step up and who showed good signs late last year are Kelly Fairchild's son Luke, Luc Monney and junior to-be jack Kimlinger.

Strong JV squad from last year will fill team with more seniors. Pat is a seasoned vet and will do a good job with these boys. Trust the system, it won't change and it can cause problems for many teams. GB

Thanks GB

Agree on Mulrenin, need his experience/talent to translate into even bigger point production

Liked what I saw from Adam Marshall at State Bantam Trny, looking forward to see how he transitions to varsity , potential to be first year big contributor

Student Manager, he wants to become a priest. Hockey has been deemphasized at Benilde. GB

How so, and why hockey?
(I see they were seeded No. 1 in the one-class boy's lacrosse state tournament.)

I think GB was being cheeky. They’ll be young again for the next year or two, but Pauly is raking in the recruits right now. Watch out for a reemergence. Maybe not 2012-2013 or 2015-2016 level, but definitely a contender.

Those top Wayzata bantams are all at Benilde along with many other top banams from other areas plus a top transfer or 2. Benilde will be strong contender this year!

O’Leary’s system is proven to be effective when it matters most, but like it or not it’s is a big reason for some of the high end talent going elsewhere.

WM, still have same feeling I had in the summer. I would put them top 20; 15 range. I too am glad to see that Wong is getting plenty of ice time this fall and is playin pretty well. It's going to be a typical Wayzata team that will have early season growing pains as they learn the O'Leary Way and probably struggle putting the puck in the net. That is why Mathews/Mulrein need to score. Not sure how many games they can win 2 to 1 or 3 to 2. In looking at their schedule, A 500 record going into the New Year maybe in line for this squad; not end of world but I'm sure me and others may start getting upset with Pat at this time and profess to know how to coach better than him. GB
