Anyone know off hand what are the lowest seeded teams to win a section tournament?
What about the state tournament? I believe Grand Rapids was a #4 in their section before going on to win it all

Austin was a #6 seed in 1993, that was the old tier 1 - tier 2 format.

That tourney doesnβt count.

Austin made it as a tier 1 team though so that should count

I didnβt realize that, I assumed they made tier 2.

I think Hill was the #3 seed in 1991 before winning the final one class tournament.

Richfield making it in 1986 as a barely .500 team had to be a low section seed. Beat Edina I think in the semis, then Tonka with Damien Rhodes playing out of his mind to deny Tonka a return trip.

Yes, and they had a much tougher time making it out of sections than they did at state, where they just rolled. HM escaped FLake in double OT in the quarters, then beat an excellent Park team in OT in the semis, before (of course) defeating WBL 4-3 in the finals.

Worst section final I've attended. Austin is the worst team to ever make the big tournament. And they won a game. But go look at the score of their two losses. Think they beat Apple Valley, which is embarassing. They upset Owatonna at the Met Center I think to go. Back them the Met Center did like 4 starting section finals (Hill was one of them that day)...

I was also at that game. Leading 5-0 over Forest Lake, who'd they never had lost to and then having to go to double OT. The getting Park who was rated #1 for much of the year at 22-1 and then WBL who had Mr. Hockey and was also #1 most of the year. That was a hell of a section to win.

As someone who has watched section 1/1AA a long, long time.... unfortunately, I can think of a few worse teams that made state out of this section.

Either a 4 or 5.
Edina beat Wayzata 8-2 in their first game. Ranked #1 for much of the season, safe to say Edina was the top seed in the Section.
Richfield beat Hopkins 6-5 in the quarterfinal. Figure that was a 4/5 game. Richfield had a losing record but played in the Lake South. Hopkins was probably Lake North. My guess is Richfield was #4, but they could have been #5.

1988 Edina was a 4 seed in sections. Beat Hill Murray for State
1991 Hill Murray was a 3 seed in sections. Beat Duluth East for State
2000 Blaine was a 3 seed in sections. Beat Duluth East for State
2012 Benilde St Margerts 3 seed in sections. Beat Hill Murray for State
2017 Grand Rapids 4 seed in sections. Beat Moorhead for State

RIchfield was 5 and Hopkins was 4 in 1986. Richfield had to win a game against a Suburban West team to even make the section quarterfinal.

Thanks! I figured there was an early game in there since there was no Class A. Top teams started in the quarters, but it did stagger back for the lower seeds.

I was at that Hill/Park semi-final game. Probably Park's best chance making state. We were #1 most of the year. Park missed an open net in OT that would have sent them to State.

I was there the year before when Park upended Hill in the semis in 3 OTs. And I remember after the game winning goal, the Hill coach asked the refs to see if the kid who scored had an illegal stick. Which I never had seen and seemed to lack class. And then WBL proceeded to pound Park to make state...

I seem to recall Mpls SW coach Dave Peterson request for a stick check a couple times in the state tournament in the early 70's

Since weβre taking a random detour down the 1990 and 1991 memory lane, I happen to know the guy from Park who scored from center ice with basically no time remaining to send the β91 semifinal to OT. One of my childhood friends was a defenseman on the 1991 Hill team, and years later we ran into the guy from Park at a bar. He was understandably still salty about that loss.

I think Richfield was the 5th seed in Section 6 in 1986. They were 8-11-1 and played in the Lake South Conference. They beat Orono, 4th seed Richfield, 1st seed Edina, and 2nd seed Minnetonka to advance to state.
