Class A Ranking Week #3 (12/12/2021)
1- Hermantown (7A) (4-0-0)
Past Week Results: W 2-1 Wayzata, W 6-3 Rosemount
Upcoming Schedule: 12/14 vs. Duluth Marshall, 12/16 @ Greenway, 12/18 @ #2 Mahtomedi
The Hawks weekend got off to a good and bad start at Wayzata. The good thing is they showed they could play a tight checking low scoring game and the transfer of Duluth East’s Dane Callaway gives the Hawks big time goalie their teams have lacked in the past. The bad was losing Zam Pante, the engine of their lineup. Minus Zam the Hawks relied on Dallas Vieau, George Pertson, and Gavin Blomdahl big day’s offensively to pull away from Rosemount late and move to (4-0-0) on the year. This week they should get two wins before they are set to travel to Mahtomedi on Saturday which looks to be the Class A Game of the year as of this date.
2- Mahtomedi (4A) (4-2-0)
Past Week Results: L 2-3 Hill Murray, W 3-2 St. Thomas Academy
Upcoming Schedule: 12/18 vs #1 Hermantown
The Zephyrs opened the week vs AA Hill Murray and despite being outplayed for large portions of the game they were able to hang around and eventually be tied late in the third period. The 55 save heroics of Ben Dardis are what we have become accustomed too and again Mahtomedi showed the potential danger they present with their ability to hang around in games. The Zephyrs did rebound finishing their week with a 3-2 win over STA. Charlie Drage’s 2 goals and Dardis’s 35 saves were all Mahtoemdi needed for the big win. This week just one game on the schedule they host #1 Hermantown. 1 vs. 2 early in the year should be a great game next Saturday!
3- Warroad (8A) (5-0-0)
Past Week Results: W 6-0 Rock Ridge, W 4-3 OT Grand Rapids
Upcoming Schedule: 12/16 @ #7 East Grand Forks, 12/18 vs. Rogers
The Warriors got their weekend set of games going nicely with a dominant win over Rock Ridge led up front by Jayson Shaugabay (5 pts.) and Damon Gardner (4 pts.) Warroad cruised to a 6-0 win. Hampton Slukynski secured his first shutout of the year. They then took on AA Grand Rapids and jumped out 3-0 they got some secondary scoring in this one only to see the lead evaporate in the third however, The Warriors responded by winning in OT. Big week vs Rival EGF and good AA Rogers will tell us a lot more about this team moving forward. This weekend was a nie step forward for their group.
4- Fergus Falls (6A) (5-0-0)
Past Week Results: W 6-1 Sauk Rapids, W 7-1 Hutchinson
Upcoming Schedule: 12/14 vs. Brainerd, 12/17 @ Rochester Century, 12/18 @ Owatonna
The Otters stayed unbeaten this week as their week got off to a weird start with the COVID PPD of Sartell. However, they rolled against Sauk Rapids winning easily 6-1 behind Junior Issac Johnson’s 3 point night. They followed that up by blasting Hutchinson 7-1 behind Johnson again with the help of DeBrito and Zierden on Saturday and the Otters are officially rolling over competition. This week they play three AA teams starting with struggling winless Brainerd and then they take a southern swing against Century and Owatonna. Three more winnable games for the unbeaten Otters.
5- Little Falls (5A) (7-0-0)
Past Week Results: W 7-6 OT #13 Alexandria, W 6-3 Pine City
Upcoming Schedule: 12/16 vs Cambridge, 12/18 vs. Sauk Rapids
The Flyers had a game for the ages on Tuesday night as they fell behind 6-1 in the second period. They ended up reuniting their big line of Johnson, Filippi and Oothoudt and they just kept fighting back. They got some heroics from Senior DefenderGeorge Moore to tie it in the last 1:30 and they finished it off with a shorthanded winner in OT by senior Defender Collin Kray. The Flyers finished the week with a chippy Section 5A win 6-3 over Pine City which saw the teams combine for 22 penalties. This week Little Falls looks to strengthen their grip on the #1 seed with an interesting game vs 5A Cambridge beware of 9th Grader Netminder Jaxon Sibell and they finish with 5A Sauk Rapids.
6- Delano (2A) (4-1-0)
Past Week Results: L 2-4 Chanhassen, W 2-1 #20 Mound Westonka
Upcoming Schedule: 12/16 vs. Breck , 12/18 vs. Hutchinson
Not Delano’s best week, it got off on the wrong foot as they ran into tough young up and coming AA Chanhassen club. Anders Peterson and Bruce Halonen scored for the Tigers as they were tied 2-2 after one. However, Chanhassen got the next two on the Powerplay and with an empty net to seal Delano’s first loss of the season. They rebounded somewhat against Mound Westonka. Will Brown was the hero; his third period goal allowed the Tigers to escape a tight one. Not overly impressive week by Delano. They have two 2A games this week at home they should roll in and get back on track.
7- East Grand Forks (8A) (4-2-0)
Past Week Results: W 14-0 Crookston, W 3-2 OT Grand Forks Central
Upcoming Schedule: 12/16 vs. #3 Warroad, 12/18 vs. #13 Alexandria
The Greenwave got their week started by blowing out Section 8A Crookston 14-0. Panzer again led the way along with big nights from Schultz and Magner. The shots in this were an incredible 59 to 1 that's one way to cover up for some shaky goaltending. The Greenwave backed that up with a very nice come from behind win over a very good Grand Forks Central team. Justin Overgaard netted the game winner on the PP late in the third for the big win. This week two more home games, the first of what will likely be 3 matchups with 8A rival Warroad and they end the week hosting a very solid Alexandria team.
8- Minneapolis (2A) (5-1-0)
Past Week Results: W 8-2 #14 Providence Academy, 12/11 W 4-2 #13 Alexandria
Upcoming Schedule: 12/14 vs Hutchinson, 12/16 @ Orono
Great week for Minneapolis who started their week with a big statement win over Section 2A Providence Academy. They broke up a tied game behind the Hattick of Evan Grimm and the efforts of the Hanson brothers. On Saturday they went north and took down a solid Alexandria club they jumped out 4-0 and then rode the solid goaltending of Alex Lamont to a nice 4-2 road win. This week they take on Hutchinson at home before hitting the road in another critical Section 2A game at Orono.
9- Duluth Denfeld (7A) (4-2-0)
Past Week Results: W 5-0 Hibbing, W 6-2 Cloquet
Upcoming Schedule: 12/14 vs Rock Ridge, 12/16 @ Superior, 12/18 vs. Proctor
The Hunters got a nice win over Section 7A Hibbing to start their week. In a game that was tight only up 1-0 after 2 periods Denfeld led by the McClure twins was able to pull away with a big 4 goal third period to secure a big section win. They followed that up with a nice win over Cloquet. Again, the Hunters used a big third period to break open the game. This week they have 3 more winnable games up north two of which are 7A games for seeding. Look for the Hunters to continue to roll.
10- Northfield (1A) (3-1-0)

This week they again just have one game and it's a rematch with Faribault this time on the road.
11- Northern Lakes (6A) (2-1-0)
Past Week Results: W 4-2 Brainerd, W 8-0 Becker/Big Lake
Upcoming Schedule: 12/14 vs Morris/Benson, 12/16 vs. #16 Detroit Lakes, 12/17 @ Park Rapids
The Lightning got a big program victory over their AA neighbors Brainerd to start their week. In a game they 56-17 it showed they are fine a goalie this year as Junior Ethan Kunz was strong and the 2 goal effort by Junior Darby Boelter helped lead Northern Lakes to a very big win. The Lightning came back with a big win over Becker Big Lake to get 2 wins on their week. This week Northern Lakes has three games during a busy week. The big one will be vs. #16 Detroit Lakes in a key Mid-State Conference game on Thursday.

Past Week Results: T 3-3 Orono, W 6-0 Faribault
Upcoming Schedule: 12/14 vs. Chaska, 12/18 @ Chanhassen
The Trojans enter the rankings as well this week. They started off with a solid tie on the road at Orono. After that they took care of business vs. Section 1A Faribault led by Portner’s hat trick and Puente’s shut out. This week they take on some old 2AA competition as they play Chaska and then Chanhassen both will be good tests. This team will be the other top contender in 1A and they play a tough schedule all winter that will have them prepared and ready to play.

A rough week for Alexandria came out flying against Little Falls building a 6-1 lead at one point in the 2nd period. It was a balanced attack led by Brycen Berg’s 2 goal however, Little Falls mounted an amazing comeback and scored 6 unanswered the final being a shorty in OT to give the Cards a tough loss on the road. They followed that up by digging a 0-4 hole vs Minneapolis in their home opener. They did fight back but it wasn't enough and the Cardinals fell to (1-3-0) and fell in the rankings as well. This week they should get 2 wins before heading to #7 EGF for a good test next Saturday.
14- Providence Academy (2A) (3-2-0)
Past Week Results: L 2-8 #8 Minneapolis, W 6-0 Hutchinson
Upcoming Schedule: 12/14 @ Hopkins, 12/18 vs Armstrong Cooper
The Lions had a rough start to their week as they were handily beaten on the road by 2A Minneapolis. In a game that was tied up 2-2 and very even after 1 period but the wheels fell off the 2nd and third and Minneapolis scored 6 unanswered to claim a big 2A win. They did end the week on a better note, dominating a previously undefeated Section 2A Hutchinson team. This week they have 2 more winnable games against AA Hopkins and Armstrong/Cooper.
15- Southwest Christian (2A) (4-1-0)
Past Week Results: W 3-2 Hopkins, W 3-1 Dodge County

Southwest Chrisitian started their week with a win over Hopkins 3-2. While the score wasn't overly impressive the Stars did find a way to win the game. They then took on Dodge County and methodically wore the Wildcats down and came away with another 3-1 victory. Nothing flashy about this group, they just find a way to win hockey games at this point. Only one game on the schedule this coming week and its a big one vs AA Gentry.
16- Detroit Lakes (8A) (3-2-0)
Past Week Results: W 4-1 Park Rapids, W 9-0 Prairie Centre
Upcoming Schedule: 12/14 @ Bemidiji, 12/16 @ #12 Northern Lakes 12/18 vs. Crookston
The Lakers enter my poll this week after being overlooked the previous two. They have only 2 losses and both were to top 10 teams. They took care of business this week racking up 2 wins vs. Park Rapids and Prairie Centre. They have used very balanced scoring to be competitive in every game so far. This week will be telling as they have two really good road test vs. a good AA Bemidiji and a Big Mid-State Conference game at #13 Northern Lakes before finishing up with 8A Crookston at home.
17- St. Cloud Cathedral (5A) (3-3-0)
Past week: W 6-4 Princeton, W 6-3 Duluth Marshall
Upcoming Schedule: 12/14 @ Prairie Centre , 12/18 vs. Wadena Deer Creek
The Crusaders much like the Detroit Lakes above them have losses only to top 10 teams (Warroad, LF, EGF).They showed in those games they can compete with the top teams in Class A. This week they showed they look to be the other contender in 5A. Led by senior Nolan Widman’s 6 goal week the Crusaders offense has a youth feel beyond him the next two leading scorers are freshman and their leading scoring defenseman is sophomore and sophomore has played every minute in net. The youth movement looks to be paying off as the Crusaders keep getting better. Should be able to get two more wins this week.
18- Chisago Lakes (4A) (4-0-1)

Landon Metcalf’s 3 point night helped them blow by Austin and they finished with a very good 2-0 win over Owatonna led by Caelin Brueske’s shut out. I had to rank them ahead of Mound Westonka who they beat head to head and they look like the favorites in a down 3A. This week 2 very winnable Big 9 games vs. Winona and John Marshall.

They won a critical Section 2A road game at Breck and then went to Section 2A favorite Delano and played them tight as well. This week will help give a better idea on Mound Westonka they play at Monticello on Tuesday which will be a curious one to see where in the heck the Moose are at and they finish with a good on at #18 Chisago Lakes who sit right above them in the rankings this week.
Dropped out of the rankings- Breck, Orono, Monticello, Luverne
