Penalty shot

The other night in the Grand Rapids- Andover game a penalty shot was correctly called at or just before the game ending buzzer during a scramble in front of the Rapids net.
Has anyone on here heard of the exact same scenario in the history of hockey at any level? I haven't. Just curious.

Didn't Blake beat Benilde on a Penalty shot goal in OT to win a Section Title a few years back?

Amazingly, the same situation occured at the end of the 1973 State Championship. Hawks star player Gordon Bombay was hooked down as time expired by Fox of Duluth and awarded a penalty shot. He would miss and the Hawks would lose in overtime.

Losing sucks.

this was a great game !
nice save by gunderson .
my only question . since there was at least some portion of a second or two left on clock when the violation occurred and penalty shot was called , shouldn’t their have been a quick faceoff after the penalty shot failed ? what do the rules say in that situation ? not that it would’ve made any difference…

There should have been. Either the penalty happened during the game or as the game ended. I assume the refs didn't put a third of a second because it was impossible to score from center ice. But you are right, there had to have been some portion of time left.

It wouldn’t have even mattered if Bombay would’ve buried that penalty shot in ‘73. “It’s not worth winning if you can’t win big” - Coach Riley

I'm the dumbest guy I know*, so I may be missing something, but if a goal can be scored as time expires, why can't a penalty be called as time expires? I've seen about 5 games where a goal was scored as time expired, and they didn't follow with a face off.
A penalty shot can be awarded if a player gets hauled down on a break away. In that case, there is a delayed whistle until the offending team touches the pick. Suppose they don't touch the puck and time expires. At 0:00, the penalty shot is taken, and I would not expect a faceoff.
I'm not aware that hockey has an NFL like rule that a game cannot end on a penalty.
*I notice no one here ever argues with me on this point.

A goal, by rule, must be across the goal line before the clock hits zero. That said, I agree with you. Penalties can be assessed at 00.00, I've seen it happen when fights start during the handshake. They still want those on the books in case there is a disciplinary hearing. So a penalty that results in a penalty shot could be called during regulation but not whistled until the clock ran out. Makes sense.

Yeah, I've seen his name before, now where was that? Oh yeah, on Lord Stanley's Cup.

I watched a game this year where a kid was hooked on a breakaway (ref's arm goes up) but the player managed to get the shot off anyway. Instead of calling 2 minutes for hooking, they called for a penalty shot.
If the ref had planned on calling 2 minutes for hooking, and if the post-infraction delayed penalty shot had gone in, there still would have been a power play. That's obvious.
But what if he was planning on calling a penalty shot even after the post-infraction shot had gone in? Would they still have called for a penalty shot? It seems to me the penalty shot is reserved for when a breakaway shot attempt has been thwarted by an infraction, which isn't what happened in this case. The infraction was legit, but the shot attempt wasn't thwarted.
Or, did the ref simply mess-up by calling for a penalty shot when hooking would have been the correct initial call?
(BTW, the penalty shot failed so the offending team actually benefitted from the call.)
