Class A Championship (3/11/23)
#1 Warroad (28-0-1) vs #3 Mahtomedi (22-8-0)

Warroad, the number one team in state all year, enters the Championship game unbeaten having survived an absolute battle with Orono in the Class A Semifinals. The Warriors were pushed hard for the second straight Class A tournament game but to their credit they have shown championship character in both games by being able to prevail and advance. Warroad returns to the Class A Title Game after having come up just short a year ago and will be seeking its school’s 5th ever Class A Title.

Mahtomedi shocked the Class A world again as they knocked off the mighty Hermantown for the 2nd time in the last four years at the Tourney. The Zephyrs played a gauntlet of a AA schedule all winter that prepared them to be the thorn that the Top 2 seeds in Class A did not want to see. They will be the underdog in this game but it’s a role they seem to thrive in and they have given the Warriors fits at the X in recent years.

They did play in early December and the Warriors top line put on a show at the Gardens but as we saw Mahtomedi is a much better team then they were at the start of the year.

Will Warroad finish the deal and win the State Title they have been building for since this game last year or will the Zephyrs play spoiler again take home their 2nd title in the last four years?

I've used two words to describe Mahtomedi over the years:
Gritty and tenacious.
Seen both so far .
Warroad was very lucky to not be behind 1-0 when the goalie was looking the other way on a trickling puck.

Warroad's Comstock down....

Would be a huge loss for Warriors hope he can play through it

Fun period! Mahtomedi brought it early but Warroad's big line gets one late in the period only to see the Zephyrs respond with under minute left.

We have a good one in the Class A Title Game!

Both team's strengths show up that period. Warroad's top line flexes muscle with 2 goals. However, Zephyrs depth shows up late with a 3rd line goal to close the gap.

That shot off the post for Mahtomedi proves again hockey is a game of inches or 1/4" in this case. Then it trickles to the Warrior goalie.
