I'm surprised it took this long. And when I say "this long", I recall when a couple teams what would have both been seeded no lower than 3 met in the first round in 1985, as well as a very imbalanced bracket in 1979.

Remind me of the rationale of only seeding 5 in the first place?

I don't think there was one apart from not wanting to hurt the feelings of the 6-8 teams. This is the agency that just keeps adding A's to classes, leading to AAAAAA football, no matter how unwieldy it is, because it would scar young minds and souls with a badge of inadequacy if they were in class D instead of AAA.

Yep, in my era, kids were tougher. It was classes AA, A, B, C, D, and Nine Man.
In fact, the snow was heavier, too. Days were shorter. All we could afford to eat was dirt. And we were grateful we had that dirt to eat, too.
Long time Stillwater football coach George Thole was right when he said that the high school league should send every team a trophy, and if they think they don't deserve it, they can just send it back.

Coach Thole had foresight. The other thing that irritates me is the pity parties held for the slightest inconvenience at schools now.
