2024-25 Section 3A Preseason Preview
Section 3A continued its trend of being the hardest section to truly predict as while Luverne had a season to remember going (23-2-0) on the year and seemed like to the obvious choice to win the section as the #1 seed. As is the case in 3A they were shocked in the Semifinals and upset which opened the door for New Ulm to end their Section Final hard luck and get to state for the first time since 2019. Those two teams look strong again this year along with both Mankato West & Mankato East bringing back good talent and bringing in a good crop of youth players to be contenders. Marshall proved again last year that they can never be overlooked and Minnesota River is bringing up a nice crew of young players of their own to make this Section as always a wild ride and we should prepare to be shocked by who wins take home the 3A title this winter.
BHS 2024-25 Section 3A Preseason Ranking
1- Mankato West Scarlets
2- New Ulm Eagles
3- Mankato East Cougars
4- Luverne Cardinals
5- Marshall Tigers
6- Minnesota River Bulldogs
7- Worthington Trojans
8- Windom Eagles
9- Fairmont Cardinals
10- Redwood Valley Cardinals
1- Mankato West Scarlets
Head Coach- Nate Olsen 4th year, (24-51-5)
Last Year's Record and Finish: (8-16-2) Lost in Section 3A Quarterfinals
Scarlets Outlook- Mankato West looks to be a sneaky choice to win Section 3A with all they bring back and what they are bringing up from the youth ranks. The key for them will be health as last year they suffered key injuries to key players all year and while they defended extremely well for them to take the next step they will need to have more offensive production as averaging just 2 goals a game will not get it done if they plan on making a run for the 3A Title. At forward there is reason to believe the scoring will improve with a healthy Senior Jaeger Zimmerman, who put up 34 points as a Sophomore, but had his season last year decimated by injuries missing over half the season. Add to him Senior Grady Hatlestad who had double digit goals last year and look for even more production out of Juniors Isaac Ulman & Brayden Keech who both were productive in their first years of Varsity. Also, Sophomores Jakobe Tosch, Brodie Cox & Keaton Dorzek all should be looked to contribute after leading the A Bantam team the State Consolation Championship. On defense they will be hoping Senior Sean King will be healthy this year and Junior Jaden Reddy along with Sophomores Grady Schmidt & Blake Rewitzer all return with good varsity experience and Sophomore Hudson Clarksean is coming up from the youth and will push for minutes. The reason to really like this team as a contender they have the best goaltender in the section as is in net Junior Mason Schreiber returns for his 3rd year already of varsity hockey and he has shown that he can carry this team to a Section 3A Championship if they can get more scoring this year which should come with better health and all the talent they bring up from the youth.
2- New Ulm Eagles
Head Coach: Ryan Neuman, 10th year, (159-74-7)
Last Year’s Record and Finish: (23-7-0) Section 3A Champion and was Class A State Participant
Eagles Outlook- New Ulm finally broke their Section Final curse of the last few years as they were able to find their way back to state for the 7th time in program history last winter. Now comes the challenge that many in 3A have been unable to repeat as Section Champs which hasn’t been done since 2012. Add to that challenge they graduated a fantastic senior class that accounted for over 95 goals last season. With all that said there are still some very good pieces returning and a batch of incoming good Bantams to make the Eagles a prime contender to win Section 3A again. Up front they return Senior Brecken Neuman & Junior Brody Nordby who both had double digit goals last season. They also bring back Seniors Caleb Forstner & Talan Helget for depth and look for Sophomores Carson Uecker & Hunter Larson to provide immediate offensive spark after big point production in the youth ranks. On defense they bring back Seniors Ian Brudelie & Brody Wenner who both played huge minutes and put up good numbers last year and they will need continued development from Senior Casey Koop & Junior Kayden Klein who both got good ice time until late in the year. In net they have a big hole to fill but look for Senior Graham Glaser to get his chance in net after having success in limited variety action last year. New Ulm is always a contender when it comes to Section 3A and with the youth coming in and the pieces that they return they should again be right there in the end fighting for a chance to win Section 3A and return to State again this winter.
3- Mankato East Cougars
Head Coach- Adam Fries 12th year, (152-130-12)
Last Year's Record and Finish: (13-12-2) Lost in Section 3A Semifinals
Cougars Outlook- Mankato East is coming into this season off of two subpar years compared to their normal standards of recent years. In their first year in Section 3A they did what many assumed would be a trend when they easily cruised to State by playing a tougher schedule than most in 3A and come in as the lower seed but more prepared to get to St Paul. However, that formula has not worked well the last two years as they have struggled with consistency during both seasons and they were knocked out by Big South Conference Teams in the 3A Semis the past two years. This will be an interesting team to watch play this winter as while they graduated 4 of their top 6 scores they basically return everyone else. At forward they return a good core of experience in Seniors Boston Beltz, Caden Hansen, Jack Hansen, Luke Scheel & Tyler Rundle all return with varsity point production along with Juniors Edward Engen, Landen Haglin to grow off solid 1st years from last winter. They are also bringing in Sophomores Zach Lang, Indy Ragan & Braydon Arnoldy from the A Bantam team the State Consolation Championship team to add to their scoring depth. On defense they return Junior Luke Lebens, who is their top overall player, and Seniors Dylan Mees & Griffin Asher to build a solid defensive core around. In net they return Senior Brody Kunst who has 2 full years of varsity experience and Mankato East looks to have a very deep lineup and should also be considered as a main contender to win Section 3A and get back to State this winter.
4- Luverne Cardinals
Head Coach- Tony Sandbulte 17th year, (284-118-10)
Last Year's Record and Finish: (24-3-0) Lost in Section 3A Semifinal
Cardinals Outlook- Roll Cards Roll will be looking for revenge this year after being the only #1 seed in Class A to not make the Section Final last winter. As is the trend in Section 3A Luverne as the top seed was upset by their longtime rivals in a shocker in the Semifinal round to end their season unexpectedly early. On paper this looks like a team in transition as they bring over Coach Sandbulte who returns to the boys program after having led the girls to 6 state tournaments in his tenure with them. They lost 3 of their top 4 scorers to graduation and to add to that sting one of their leading returning scorers Sophomore Carter Como chose to leave the program to play Tier One hockey in Sioux Falls. There is still reason to have optimism though they do return some really good pieces returning to again be a serious contender to win 3A. Offensively, they return Juniors Maddux Domagala & Landyn Lais who both had double goals and over 40 plus points last year. They also bring back Seniors Alexander Schlosser, Levi Gonnerman & Marcus Vortherms and Junior Blake Sauer who have varsity experience and look for Sophomores Will Bergman & Colton Haubrich to come up from the youth and contribute on the offensive end. On defense they bring back Senior Blaik Bork, Junior Jaxon Lais & Sophomore Henry Hartquist who all played mega minutes last year and had double digit points to have a good core on the blue line. In net look for Junior Gavin Hoven to step in after having looked good in part time varsity action last year. Roll Cards Roll won't be as potent as they were a year ago but they still return a good enough core to make waves yet again down in Southwest Minnesota and contend for their 4th ever 3A Title.
5- Marshall Tigers
Head Coach- Michael Weiss 12th year, (165-113-6)
Last Year's Record and Finish: (16-12-0) Lost in Section 3A Championship
Tigers Outlook- Marshall made one of the best Cinderella runs in all of Class A during the playoffs last year. As a #5 seed they were able to pick up two upset wins before falling just short of State in the 3A Final. This season they will look to build on that momentum and while they did get hit hard by graduation they do bring back a strong senior class and will look to be playing its best hockey come playoff time again this year. Offensively a trio of Seniors Owen Renslow, Jacob Johnson & Easton Larsen all return with double digit goals from last year. For scoring depth look for Juniors Carson Kopitski & Blake Grimsley to improve after good 1st years of varsity to contribute even more a year later. Defensively Seniors Luke Ehlers & Tyler Welsh are back having had double digit points last along with Junior Nate Drown who saw good minutes and look for Sophomore Tate Mellenthin to push for minutes from the youth. They will need a new goalie but look for Senior Nathan Lenz to step in after getting limited action last year. There is more than enough here to make Marshall a contender again in 3A this winter.
6- Minnesota River Bulldogs
Head Coach- Chris Miller 4th year, (31-46-1)
Last Year's Record and Finish: (14-12-0) Lost in Section 3A Quarterfinals
Bulldogs Outlook- Minnesota River will be going through a rebuilding year after graduating a huge senior class that won 14 games a year ago. While they did graduate a huge core they will return some good pieces and they also have an influx of good A Bantams coming into the program to make this a team to watch as the year progresses in 3A. Up front Senior Cole Goecke & Junior Riley Kamm return after having double digit goals and being the teams 3rd and 5th leading scorer last winter. Scoring depth will look to come from Seniors Kaden Throldahl, Josiah Juarez & Tyler Gogerty who all got some varsity experience last year and look for Sophomores Ryker Rehm & Max Hollerich to step up from the youth and contribute immediately. On defense Seniors Logan Fahey & Derek Guth and Junior Levi Wachal return with good experience and Sophomores Nathan Tews & Tyson Fredrickson come up from the youth to provide depth on the blueline. They will need a new starter in net but Junior Anders LeDell did get some time last year and this team could develop into a contender as the year goes along in 3A.
7- Worthington Trojans
Head Coach- Tyler Nienkerk 7th year, (22-108-0)
Last Year's Record and Finish: (7-18-0) Lost in Section 3A Play In Round
Trojans Outlook- Worthington is coming off an improved year that saw double their win total from the previous winter. However, an upset loss in the 3A Playoffs Play-In Round left them with a bitter taste in their mouth heading into the offseason. Things do look bright this year as up front they return their leading scoring in Senior Spenser Nickel who led the team in goals last season and put up over 30 points. Add in Sophomore Dominic Pavelko who had double digit goals as well and they should get scoring depth from Seniors Ayden Stugelmeyer, Mason & Maxwell Ommen who return with experience. Defensively a trio of Seniors Anthony Jimenez, who had double digit points last year, Trenton Chantharath & Evan Bumgardner are back with experience as well. Add to that Goaltender Junior Brody Pederson returns as the starter in net for what should be a much improved Worthington team this winter in 3A.
8- Windom Eagles
Head Coach- Travis Janssen 6th year, (50-71-2)
Last Year's Record and Finish: (7-20-0) Lost in Section 3A Quarterfinals
Eagles Outlook- Windom is looking to be going through a few rebuilding years after reaching the first Semifinal in program history just a few short years ago. They graduated a big Senior class this past offseason and they will need some of their younger players to step up to remain competitive this winter. Senior Landon Pillatzki returns and he is coming off a nice season where he had 20 plus points. Look for a big year out of Senior Nick Espenson who missed much of last year and Junior Andrei Rivera & Sophomore Ian Nelson seem poised for big things after a good 10th & 9th grade campaigns. After that they will need new faces to fill in as there's a lot of openings within the lineup and how well 8th grader Kole Espenson can step into the starting goaltender role will be critical as this will be a very young team hoping to develop as the year goes on.
9- Fairmont Cardinals
Head Coach- Dylan VanBrocklin 6th year, (26-98-0)
Last Year's Record and Finish: (3-24-0) Lost in Section 3A Quarterfinals
Cardinals Outlook- Fairmont is hoping their playoff upset in the Play in Round of last year’s playoffs can be used as some positive momentum heading into this year. After winning just 2 games during the regular season and graduating 7 of their 9 leading scorers any signs of positivity are key. They do return forwards Junior Gavin Kester who had double digits goals last winter Senior Eric Determan who had double digit points on the year. On defense Senior Tyler Kurt is back with some experience to build around. In net they do return Junior Brandon Hector who split the net last year and they will need his experience as they will be breaking in a very young inexperienced lineup this winter.
10- Redwood Valley Cardinals
Head Coach- Denny Spielmann 4th year, (3-66-0)
Last Year's Record and Finish: (1-24-0) Lost in Section 3A Play-In Game
Cardinals Outlook- Redwood Valley has had a very tough stretch in recent years and last year was no different but thankfully they were able to win at least 1 game as they have only won 3 games total in the last three years combined. They do return pretty much everyone this year and the hope is that a year older and stronger will allow them to be a bit more competitive than they have been in recent times. At forward Senior Thomas Fischer, Juniors Erik Rasmussen & Alexandre Bourret and Sophomore Landon Stoneberg return as the team's main scorers on the offensive end and they will look for them to be more productive a year older and look for Sophomore Sam Klabunde to provide immediate impact as well. On defense Senior Kilen Cilek is back as the team’s leading scorer and they return Sophomore Jacob O'Halloran in net and he took plenty of shots last winter and will be stronger this winter as Redwood Valley looks to show improvement this year.
Section 3A continued its trend of being the hardest section to truly predict as while Luverne had a season to remember going (23-2-0) on the year and seemed like to the obvious choice to win the section as the #1 seed.
