Please note that next year the Sections for the 2026-27 Season will be the same as they were this year.
However, there is some news about the next section realignment for the 2027-28 & 28-29 seasons!
As we know, next season will be the 6th year of this latest cycle. That is important as every 6 years they start all over and take all teams off the map they use and create new lines. So there will be a bigger shake-up.
Also, the MSHSL released their Timeline for when they will announce these new assignments, and it's gonna happen on Dec 3rd instead of in April in the spring. Was told AD and coaches wanted it announced earlier to help with scheduling section teams.
Key Dates
Sept 11
Deadline for submission of:
1. Opt ups for any team in sports or activities according to board policy.
2. Completed applications for new co-ops or dissolutions of existing co-ops to be placed.
Keep hearing that some 7AA & 8AA teams will no longer be opting up into Class AA and will play Class A after next year.
Sept 15th
Classification cut-offs for all activities will be released to member schools and Administrative Regions
Once the MSHSL knows who is no longer opting up they can reset the number for enrollement cutoff between A & AA
Sept 25th
Deadline for filing an appeal for lower classification of teams defined board policy.
Teams like Osseo, Tartan, MPLS, Waconia etc will have to send their appeal to stay down and new schools wanting to drop down will have to have the appeals in by this date.
Oct 6th
ADs Advisory Committee hears appeals from schools and recommends those that will be granted
Oct 7th
MSHSL Board of Directors Executive Committee meets to review appeals and schools are notified.
School are told if they are going to be allowed to drop into Class A
Dec 1
ADs Advisory reviews all section assignments.
DECEMBER 3 BOARD MEETING
MSHSL Board of Directors approves all section assignments for 2027-2028 and 2028-2029
We will know the new sections very early into the hockey season next year!
