Mayo has suffered a couple injuries over the past couple games, as I understand. They have also had a week to get healed since they're last game against JM. Even if the injured players were out, AL doesn't have the horses to compete with Mayo. Although AL is very well coached, they are way too young to win to game. But, I would expect them to compete, it's a different team than the one that Mayo destroyed earlier in the year. If AL's coach isn't Big 9 coach of the year, I don't know who is...

AL v. Roch M/L

Logic would dictate that M/L would be heavily favored. The injured players are fine now, but I've learned to expect the unexpected in M/L games. They barely got a 1-0 win in Mankato last week against West, and Rochester JM/Century was only down 1-0 after 2 periods getting outshot 37-7. Besides, Albert Lea has Laura Hillman & Jenna Christensen, so they can score goals. I'm expecting a good game.

In this game, defense will be the key- especially for the Tigers. Assuming Olchefske is between the pipes (and doesn't go cold) and the defense can keep SOG at 32 or below, Albert Lea can pull off a 3-2 upset. The first 5 minutes will be critical; AL has to come out strong and focused at each position immediately. They can't give up the easy goal and have to fight their way back. Mayo/Lourdes is an excellent team, but not unbeatable. I understand M/L will still be without their primary goalkeeper, but their backup is quite competent.

Assuming the "huddle" stats are correct, there's a third player on Albert Lea to keep an eye on in addition to Hillman and Christensen. Madi Passingham is an 8th grader who started to produce points towards the end of December. Also noticed that AL's last 4 loss's were only by a goal and 3 of the 4 loss's came from games that were tied going into the 3rd period. Should be a good game.

Go Mayo

Who I am is really not important. Would it make my posts any more, or less, valid if I you knew me? I'm just a big fan of the game who's too old to play any longer, but I do love it...

A disappointing outing for the Tigers.

If you compare the two games (Nov 22 vs Jan 21):
M/L got more SOG in the second game
M/L got more SOG in the first period of the second game
M/L got more goals in the first period of the second game
AL got fewer SOG in the second game
AL got fewer SOG in the first period of the second game
One of the few bright spots was goal differential.

Beating M/L, at best, is difficult. To have a chance at the upset, the Tigers needed to exceed M/L's intensity from the start.

This is not a slam at the new coaching staff- they have done an admirable job with a largely inexperienced squad, but four difficult games remain before Sections.
