Didn't see Mitch's post before I posted a lengthy reply. I'll repost it here and delete it from the HS Hockey forum.

Lee

Actually, it's 5,400+ if they sell out their standing-room only.

In off-years (which was pretty much 1986-2002), the only games which could guarantee a sell-out was the Gopher series and that was only because the Gopher fans bought up a mess of tickets. Many locals only consider Gophers to be our rivals. (This year is different, of course)

There is a word to describe Duluth fans of all sports: FICKLE

Once you understand that, you understand why the Duluth Dukes pulled up stakes and moved to Kansas City, why the Duluth Lumberjacks (indoor football) only lasted a year, why Duluth could never support a minor league hockey team. Sports teams are, by and large, a terrible draw in this city.

Like I said, it takes a huge season for the Dogs to start selling out. And even now, check out the attendance for the first Colo. Coll. game; just 4388. This was after tUMD had won five in a row and were really starting to roll. Sure, they sold out Saturday night, but you get the picture.

Lee

You know as well as I do that you gotta win baby to fill those stands. It is also a fact (in my mind) that the administration of tUMD let the hockey program slide for some time. I have seen it posted and witnessed the crowds at the DECC for the high school playoffs and good hockey brings the 'northlanders' in. As for the minor league things..I would say that it is more economical than fickle fans. As some former pro organizations never did realize is that there are alot of recreational opportunities in these areas and you gotta compete or you will get beat. I know how that community treats the players, even in the down years, and I would have to say it is nothing short of Classy.

and this is of course if your post did not disappear.... <img src="

26 hours till we drop the puck. Couldn't get tickets to Friday night's game unless I want to stand in line for how many hours to get two of those 75 standing-room-only ticks that go on sale tomorrow at 5 p.m. We're set for Saturday night. Props to WDIO for deciding to televise the Friday game. At least we have that.

Man, I haven't been this geeked for a game at any level since East-Anoka in '98.

Lee

For some reason, down in Fergus Falls, we get the Sioux games on a local access station (Out of Perham, MN, nonetheless). I seem to recall them only showing home games, though. Announcers and overall production is horrible, but it would be something else to watch while the Gophers are destroying Ducks Unlimited. I mean Denver University.

The UND/fUMD series should be much more entertaining. SHOULD be. Everyone thinks it will be a high scoring series, with both teams having brilliant offenses. People always say this, but it seems to me, that it results in low scoring affairs. I'll stick with my gut and say at least one game will be very defensive minded.

Friday:
UND - 3
fUMD - 4

Saturday:
UND - 2
fUMD - 2 OT

Of course, the yearly meltdown of Sioux goaltenders happening, that wouldn't bother me too much. <img src=

Well, Round One to the Sioux. Dogs looked very ordinary tonight, passes not crisp at all and a step slower than their usual speedy self. Isaac played okay but not great. Certainly not good enough. Hope Saturday is a turnaround.

Triple-header tomorrow. Get to see both 7AA semis, go home and wolf down a quick meal then grab wifey and head back down there to yell ourselves hoarse. I hope.

Lee

Mitch are you going to either game this weekend? They're televising Saturday's game on loco TV, not sure if they're planning to pick up Friday's.

They need one point to hold onto second place. Otherwise, it's just a weekend to get a better Pairwise seed heading into the WCHA playoff.

Lee

Lee, Why do you put the "t" before UMD?

boblee,
If your idea of a good time is dragging up threads from march of 2004, you might consider intervention. Theres got to be a twelve step program out there for forum-aholics.

Well scheids, you can talk all day long about what you guys get in Fregus but the real measure of your town is whether The Blue Man Group is coming there.
The Dulutherans are painting their faces now in anticipation of the arrival.
Maybe you should paint the Big Otter blue and see what happens.
