The Jr Gold and U16 levels will now use tag-up offsides rule for next season. I know this will be liked by some of the kids that played high school for a few years and then had to switched back to the delayed offsides.

USA Hockey gave MN Hockey permission to do this for one year at this level.
Next year being a rule change there is a possiblity (not likely but possibility) that it may change for all levels.
But it is expected that tag-up will be left for the jr gold level even after this year.

Elliot,
This is great news and I like the idea of tag up at least down through Squirt A level. If yo watch the games close the kids are very heads up on coming out of the zone when the puck inadvertantly strays in offsides. Their are way too many stoppages as it is currently. Great job elliot, keep up the good work!

If you ask me (and know one has) tag-up off sides is a poor idea even at the high school level. Yes you do get more whistles at the older levels, but in terms of developement this is a bad idea.
Your defensemen never have to learn to handle the puck. They don't have to. They just dump it down the ice. The United States in the last two years has had some of the finest young defencemen drafted in our countrys history. This would be the 87 and 88 birth years. The rule was changed to delayed offsides when they were squirts. They grew up having to handle the puck!
In the first to round of this years NHL draft here is where the defensemen came from
USA = 12
Canada = 5
Russia = 3
Sweden = 1
Erik Johnson would not be the player he is if he would have grown up playing dump in.

USA Hockey is asking.
We have a rule change year coming up and input from members is always accepted.

Junior Gold and tag-up.
Sudden Death - I do not disagree with you on development with no tag-up.
But Junior Gold is classified as recreational (I know they play competitively, but the class is rec).
As such, the kids like to have fun, they like playing the game similar to the other HS guys, some have played the HS game with tag-up.
This was the basis for the change.

Tag up offsides would make the defensman learn to handle the puck under pressure better. It gives a better flow to the game which makes the game more enjoyable to watch.

It appears that ALL the refs are not aware that JG is using the tag up offsides feature this year. Make sure you review this before the beginning of your game with the officials and the other coach.

i love it, its so annoying when you haveta stop the game every 5 minutes for off sides. and its true last night one of our refs didnt know it was tag up untill our coach told him and even then it took him 2 more tries to get it right...haha

Another "quality" ref to add the the ever growing list. MN Hockey has alot of work to do.
