What should the MSHSL transfer rule be?
As I see it

My two cents:
Freshman and Sophomore year, 1 free transfer.
Junior year transfer, 1\2 season (no penalty with residence change)
Senior year transfer, 1/2 season with no post season play (no penalty with residence change).
That would stop teams from loading up each year and make the Freshman and Sophmores really think hard about transfering to a top rated school that has depth. They may get stuck on JV until their Seniors.

9th isn't "free", HS doesn't start until 9th grade so it isn't a transfer. A loophole in the current system is you can play 7th or 8th for one team then go to another in 9th. It's a hockey transfer but not a school transfer.
Some schools don't start HS until 10th grade and some privates have no openings in 9th so you have to wait until 10th to get in so I would agrue that HS doesn't start until 1oth grade for the purposes of determining transfer. I wouls change the poll so add a 10th grade option.
I would also argue that if you are paying to go to a private school you are intitled to all it has to offer. There are many reasons people wait to go to private schools, money being one of them. Not everone going to a private school is rich. If you hate privates and think they should be in their own league that's fine too, add it to the poll.

I should add, I can't edit a poll after it is voted on. For clairification - currently you can transfer all you want in 7th & 8th. Going into 9th is free for all. Between 9th & 12th you get one free. A 2nd one is 1/2 a year. This is all assuming no residence change.

If you transfer and your parents don't move into the district with the child....the child should have to sit 1 full year.

Good idea but the standard way around that is guardian transfer or renting a cheap apartment. As we continue to come up with items like this one we need to think about how you would write the rule and enforce/investigate these special cases.
