Mankato has lost 10 kids to HS that more than likely would have made the BA team. Two of these kids are sophomores with Bantam eligibility

Change that

Don't most HS coaches talk to the kids before tryouts and tell them what they want?

Yes some do but most players that are eligible still start with the bantam teams. The bigger communities are the ones that don't lose players, like EP, Edina, White Bear. I see Roseville lost 3 and a goalie that is going to hurt, they weren't very big to start and had 1 line that was strong. It will be interesting to see what happens and where they finish.

Make that 4 skaters and a goalie for Roseville. They lost another one today to Totino. The goalie they lost will be one of three for JV.....I can't understand why JV wants 3 goalies???? I bet both the A and B1 coaches are ticked off.

Question?

Why would a good player in 9th grade choose to play at the JV level vs. Bantam A. I understand if he would be playing on the Varsity team but playing on JV is, to me, hard to understand?

Bantams: # of games and scrimmages (50-55), quality competition, state tournament opportunity, go to player, confidence, friends

JV: Competition (?), development (?), # of games (20-24)

Varsity: # of games and scrimmages (24-30), competition (high), practice competition (high), development (good), coaching (unknown).

My opinion is that one would opt to play varsity if given the opportunity. Playing on varsity would require that the player would need to compete day in and day out at a higher level both in practive and in games. If one would make the varsity only to observe from the bench what benefit would this have for a young player. To get better you need to compete at a higher level and sitting on the bench is far from competing on the ice.

It could come down to dollars for some. There is not alot of money out of pocket if you play HS vs. bantam A. If the kid is going to a private HS, then money definately is not an issue, but a public HS is a different story.

How much on average does it cost to play Bantam A with travel to 50 plus games along with a couple weekends of hotesl for tournaments? Compare that to a couple hundred for athletic fees paid to the school.
