if you added state tournaments, then people wouldnt care as much and it wouldnt be as significant if you won the class A tourney insted of the AA we have now

you should have to earn your way to go to state. Why do you think the high school basketball and football state games are never really attended that well. It is because they have to many classes.

The system is fine the way it is. The HS Hockey tourney is the crown jewel of all the state's HS tournaments. If you start adding more classes to the mix, it will simply water down the product and make it far less enjoyable.

Football should probably be 4, basketball should be 3, and hockey should be 2. Keep it how it is.

Sounds like a good Idea, but we have to realize that most of the competition between the AA and A is usually the same schools. If we tried adding more schools that would just allow lesser powered hockey programs to see state, but no one would really care.
IT is fine were it is at the moment.

there isnt as many schools who have hockey as there are who have basketball

dumb idea

The Section tournaments are half the fun, if not more. I love the great section games at the DECC.

I think adding more classes would take meaning out of the State Tourney. It would make it seem like a football state tournament and as we all know hockey has the physical play, but also the finesse and grace football lacks

Probably a good reason for more classes in basketball...

It's not like the A champion is the 4th best team in state. It just lets the other guys play. If there was just one class in football, what would be the point of even having a post season for the 9-man through AAA teams? It just lets other people play and get seen, or am I missing something?

One class takes away from so much time in the Excel.
Personally I say why go down to less games? Plus this way the AA schools can claim to be better solely for that reason.
Also personally, although I don't think it would ever happen, what about a 16 team bracket or something to that?

16 Team Bracket

A 16 team state tournament bracket would be awesome. I don't know if you meant for a one class tourney or 16 for both classes but I wouldn't mind either. I will say, if you were to go to 16 per class, there would be some monster blowouts but there are always at least 2 teams that deserve to play for the state title and can't because they run into a powerhouse. Maybe a second tourney for the section runners-up. 16 teams in a one class tourney would be sweet too.

I meant 16 teams for one class. I guess if you wanted to do 16 for the current two classes, you could just say (like in some sports where top two go to state in section) that the section final game is a state game. If you think about it though, that would be dumb since state is technically a 64 team bracket just with the first three rounds being called "sections" and the last three being called "state".

So...16 team one class could be better. But would have to be a new system of getting there, because I'd have to argue 16 sections is too much...

It would be cool if they kept sections the way they were, but rolled all the A teams in with the AA teams and played them off. Who wouldn't want to see a Moorhead vs Warroad game at the X? CDH vs STA? Grand Rapids vs Marshall? Hill-Murray vs Thief River Falls? Wow, now THAT would be some hockey. A weeklong, 16 team, 1 class championship. That's what high school hockey should be.

Two classes is the way to go and i think that shouldn't be changed, however, if you did sections like normal with the two seperate classes then combined all in the state tourny that would really be something to see

Hmmm.... Lets say Brainerd had a good year and got the 4 seed. Cloquet was #2 because they got jobbed by Duluth East again, which received the #1. Elk River got lucky and beat Rapids which pushed the Thunderchickens to the fifth seed.

Now in order for Grand Rapids to get to state, they would have to beat a good Brainerd team, and then 2 out of the other three. Well earned trip to state.

Now your even with some Class A team who only had to beat Sleepy Eye to get there.

Doesn't seem right to me.

Yes its gonna have some games that might not be as great like that. or it might make you feel like you had to beat some quality teams but that class A team still had to beat two other teams regardless of who they are and there could be some very exciting A and AA team match up's if the state tourny were to go like that

How are you even with the other team? Any ranking system, like PS2, uses strength of schedule. I could be wrong, but Duluth Marshall I think was the only A team ranked above any of the AA teams you just mentioned.

Sure you can get a trophy, but are you saying the 9-man football guys don't get to play just cuz only 100 kids happen to go to their school?

Who cares? That just means that Grand Rapids will be battle tested enough to pound the crap out of whoever they play. 16 team, 8 "small school" 8 "big school" teams for the state championship. All at the Xcel. The MSHSL should seriously consider that.

No way full BCS style ratings top to bottom. Every team in the state makes it, no classes. All 100+ teams battling it out, round by round.
