In 6 games Nate Schmidt of St Cloud has 18 points as a freshman with half being goals and half assists. Anyone know anything about him? He the team's star? What does this do for 2A?

This kid is unbelievable for a freshman. He will not be around long. I have not seen DM play but it will be tough to believe that they are much better than SCC. They have a great goalie and great Defenseman. Like I said I have not seen DM play but I have to believe they will for sure be top 2 inthe section.

Why won't he be around long? Where's he going?

I am not sure but I would think he will have alot of oppurtunities to go to USHL, Shattuck, Ann Harbor. Whatever he chooses to do. He is a great player who plays very Physical and sees the ice great. Offensive D if he needs to be. I do not know him at all but from watching this freshman, I do not think he will be around long.

I have seen him play - not going to lie - he's pretty amazing. He has a snipe and the moves. I heard he took it all the way down the ice and scored the overtime for SCC against Lourdes. When the forwards cant get it in the net, SCC has great D to do it for them from the points, they also have Olmscheid - he is a big kid and a strong force - I believe he has at least 10 points as well.

I had a chance to see Marshall play this weekend and am hoping to see Denfeld this Friday.

I have a hard time believing any other team has as strong of Defense and Goalie as SCC. I'll take Olmscheid and Schmidt over Stauber and Jacques any day of the week.

He was invited to join the NTDP in a year (fall of 2007) this past summer. At the time, he didn't know if he was going to accept the invite. I don't know if that has changed though.

let me just say one thing about this kid...

hes just amazing, he can move and hes got one hell of a shot. i cant believe hes a freshman. i wish i was that good.

Nate Scmidt is a pretty talented defenseman over there at the catholic institute. He has size, has great, hands, hard shot, and is an overall great player. Him and Jared Maetche are the players to watch at the GCC. I agree with southernmnscout, he wount be around for long hes received letters from the NTDP and USHL.

I have seen him play for 8years now. He is the real deal

If they make it to state, as they definitely could, would that change his mind?

I'm gonna agree with you guys that say he's gonna leave pretty soon. A kid this good, playing for a program like St. Cloud Cathedral? Don't get me wrong, their an alright hockey team, but if he's that good I can almost guarantee he'll be going somehwere else....like "Ann Harbor"

Another question: Why doesnt a town the size of St. Cloud produce more good hockey teams and players?

How many games do the kids that go there play? Are they really hindered that much by playing in the MSHSL?

That shows how blind you are to Minnesota hockey.

Cathedral is a program that has been on the rise for the last 3-5 years.

Apollo had probably the second best team in the state in 1999. They lost to Roseau in the section finals in an overtime or two. Roseau ran through the state tourney that year.

Apollo was great in the late 90's and early 2000's...Tech has been to couple section finals in the past few years.

Sure, Schmidt will face better competition in those other levels. But his name is already out there, coaches won't just pass him over beacause he played five years at a Class A school. CC didn't pass over Addison DeBoer, for ONE example.

Well, I think Johnny is right. In this day and age great players ever leave great schools. I don't expect him to be there through his senior year.

As for Johnny, know what you're talking about before you open your mouth. I think I have successfully refuted your claims.

I don't think his decision to possibly leave would really be about concerns over getting noticed. As you said, college scouts already know who he is.

I think it would more likely be a matter of how well prepared he would like to be when he does make it to the next level. Playing another three years against his current competition isn't going to help his development as much. Is that OK with him? Maybe.

But if he wants to make the greatest impact he can, he may think that he needs to play against the best competition available to him. That would seem like the more plausible reason for him leaving SCC for the NTDP or the USHL. Leaving for the sake of "more exposure" isn't necessary in his case.

Also, he may want to experience another year of high school with his friends.

Last year during SCSU v. Gopher games, there were 4 St. Cloud kids on the ice in Harrington, Howe, Hartmann and Swanson. That's not too bad, I'd say. The first 3 played at Apollo and Swanson is from Tech. Another Apollo grad included Brandon Schwartz, the team captain for Michigan Tech last year. Too bad St. Cloud can't produce any hockey players, huh Johnny?

How about the Colorado Avalanche's Kurt Sauer.

Good call on that one...was he in the last 10 years I can't remember. I watched him when I was very young.

While we're at it might as well throw in his brother Kent. And Michael Sauer did play for Tech for a bit (also sartell). Michael got drafted last year by the New York rangers.
