Who thinks Mark McGwire should have been voted into the Hall of Fame. I think he got an unfair deal since steroids weren't banned until 2002 and the public and writers loved him the whole time he was playing.

No way, let the Hall be for the people who play the game fair.

If the Hall is to be a place for people who play the game fair should they kick out Gaylord Perry, who admitted to "doctoring" the baseball, or Ty Cobb, who deliberately tried to hurt other players and was accused of fixing at least one game?

Gaylord Perry and ty Cobb were also both quite a bit better than Mark. But I agree with your statment. It is a tough call.

Are you saying that based strictly on numbers that you don't think McGwire is a Hall of Famer? Steroid allegations aside.

Based strictly on numbers he probably should be in, but in my opinion he's not a shoe in.

You are certainly entitled to you opinion, and it is obvious that you are not alone in not thinking that McGwire should have been a first ballot Hall of Famer. Did you know that Joe DiMaggio was not elected to the Hall of Fame until his 4th time on the ballot! He was not elected three times! Also, Cy Young, with all of his 511 career wins, was not a first ballot Hall of Famer!

I, personally, believe that the Hall of Fame should be a place where someone who knows nothing about baseball at all can learn about its rich history. That the baseball Hall of Fame should be a museum that includes all that is wonderful about the game and even some of the bad. How can we pretend that the magical summer of 1998 never happened? How can we say that Pete Rose's 4,256 hits aren't an important part of the history of baseball? I think that Pete Rose, Joe Jackson, and Mark McGwire should all be elected into the Hall of Fame for what they did for the game and what they accomplished on the field; however, on each of their plaques there should be an explanation of the cloud in which they were elected. Explain that Pete Rose was banned from the game for betting on baseball, tell people about Joe Jackson and the "Black Sox" scandal, and explain that McGwire was elected under suspicion of using performance enhancers. The Hall of Fame is not a place for moral righteousness, how many members were alcoholics or commited adultery? The Hall of Fame is a place to celebrate the great history of baseball, the ENTIRE history of baseball. I guess that's just my humble opinion of this matter, others are certainly welcome to disagree, that's what makes forums like this so great!

Zamboni you have just converted me, as long as the situation is explained on the plaque there is no reason that they shouldn't be in.

I once was lost but now am found, was blind but now I see.

Goldy, I was not trying to "convert" you or anybody else, just throwing out my thoughts on this issue. Glad I could help you "see the light" though.

Mark McGwire

583 Homeruns

1626 career hits.

.263 Career Batting Average.

1414 career RBIs.

Rafael Palmeiro is considerably better in every statistic except homeruns...But, neither should be in if Pete Rose isn't.

What does being an alcoholic or an alduturer have to do with baseball? They are seperate, maybe not the types of things that win you citizen of the year, but they have nothing to do with Baseball. Betting on a baseball game in which you managed may very well affect the outcome of the game, taking performance enhancing drugs has an affect on the outcome of the game, Both have long standing implications as to the integrety of the game and it's records. Drinking beer doesn't, neither does doing cocaine, beating your wife, or cheating at cribbage.

Funny thing is Shawn Merriman, an admitted steroid taker, gets suspended for 4 games this season and is still voted by his peers to go to the Pro-Bowl. How seriously does the NFL take steroids? They're just giving it lip service, and this after a number of former players have died from steroid related causes. At least baseball finally relizes it has a major problem and is trying to do something.

Big Mac will never make The Hall.

Without looking it up, Macs numbers look a lot like Killebrews. Harmon made it after 3 tries if memory serves. Da Killer , when he retired, was in the top 5 for career HRs.

Big Mac is not a first ballott HOFer.

My old man doesn't understand men wearing earings and he never will. Though I never pierced my own ear, I do accept it as mainstream.

The point is this, Big Mac will not make the Hall until the culture of the voters changes. Right now, the men with the ballots will never give Big Mac or Sosa 70% of the vote. And as far as the veterans committee goes, I don't see them ever letting anyone into their club. From what I can see, many of the veterans are plagued by Joe Morgan's Disease (nobody is as good as I was).
