FINAL RESULTS: 2002 Internet Steel Tracked Roller Coaster Poll
As was the case in 2001, Holiday Park Germany's Expedition GeForce was voted the top steel
coaster outside of the United States and Six Flags New England's Superman - Ride of Steel
was voted the top steel coaster in the United States. However, this time enough people
had ridden both EGF and SRoS to make a valid comparison and Expedition GeForce was voted
the #1 steel coaster on the planet.
Those two were far and away the top two coasters in the 2002 poll. One example of how
wide their gap is on the other steel coasters in the top 10 is that they were both preferred
to the Favorite Wood Coaster category whereas every other ride in the top 10 lost that
comparison by vote ratios that ranged from nearly 2:1 all the way to almost 5:1.
Millennium Force and Nitro again finished third and fourth in the poll, the New York
and Maryland versions of Superman - Ride of Steel finished fifth and sixth, X debuted at #7,
Apollo's Chariot finished eighth, Nemesis fell a bit to ninth, and Kraken rounds out the
2002 top 10..
Unlike in 2001 when the top four rides were new to the poll, this year's top rookie,
X at Six Flags Magic Mountain, came in at #7. An argument could easily be made that X is
deserving of a higher rank, as it won the mutual rider comparisons with MF and Nitro, but
losses and ties to lesser ridden rides ranked below it caused it to slide down in the final
rankings.
It is interesting to note that while the large group of American enthusiasts that
travelled to Europe this past summer likely provided the ballots for Germany's EGF to claim
the top spot, they also are likely the reason that longtime favorite England's Nemesis, which
had finished fifth in the two preceding polls, slipped a bit to ninth this year.
Amongst the top seven rides, the mutual rider comparisons went as follows:
EGF was preferred to SRoS:NE 6-2, to MF 8-1, to Nitro 6-0, to SRoS:NY 7-0,
to SRoS:MD 7-0, and to X 2-1. SRoS:NE was preferred to MF 36-9-1, to Nitro 39-6, to
SRoS:NY 30-1, to SRoS:MD 32-1-1, and to X 11-1. MF was preferred to Nitro
28-25-3, to SRoS:NY 32-12, to SRoS:MD 26-17-1, but lost the comparison to X
8-10-2. Nitro was preferred to SRoS:NY 19-12-3, to SRoS:MD 20-17-4, but lost
the comparison to X 5-7. SRoS:NY won vs SRoS:MD 12-4-12, and vs X 5-3.
SRoS:MD won the comparison to X 7-6.
Other new rides that finished in the top 40 this year include Six Flags Holland's Goliath
at #16, Knott's Berry Farm's Xcelerator at #21, Six Flags over Georgia's Superman - Ultimate
Flight at #22, Thorpe Park's Colossus at #34, Alton Towers' Air at #36, and the few respondents
who had ridden Warner Bothers Movie World Spain's Superman la Atraccion rated it #23.
Other top rides that finished better than ever in the poll include Six Flags America's
Superman - Ride of Steel at #6, Sea World Florida's Kraken at #10, Kennywood's Phantom's Revenge
at #16, and Six Flags Magic Mountain's Goliath, which climbed 19 spots from 2001 to place 17th
this year.
With the debut of X at #7 and the rise of Goliath to #17, Six Flags Magic Mountain has
joined Cedar Point (#3 Millennium Force, #19 Magnum XL-200) and Islands of Adventure
(#12 Dueling Dragons-Fire, #15 Incredible Hulk) as parks vying for the top steel coaster duo.
Add in #26 Dueling Dragons-Ice and #25 Raptor and IoA & CP are also very close for the top trio.
France's Gouderix has dethroned two time defending (and never "beaten" in this poll)
"champion" Flashback for the title of least favoured steel coaster in the poll.
You may see the mutual rider comparisons between the 273 coasters (including
"Favorite Wood Coaster") that had riders take the poll this year by downloading the
spreadsheet from the website http://www.geocities.com/wcoasterpoll
The "Favorite Wood Coaster" would be placed third amongst the steel rides.
The comparisons of "Favorite Wood Coaster" to EGF and SRoS:NE were lost by 4-8-2 and
14-18-11 votes respectively.
The following results are presented in a tabular format showing 1999,
2001, and 2002 placements, giving a better feel for trends and consistencies
in the poll. When viewing this chart, one should expect a coaster's rank
to drop slightly from year to year due to additional coasters debuting in
the poll. Special attention should be paid to the RIDERS column as the
fewer the number of riders, the greater the margin of error.
The detailed 2002 results, the ride forces poll results, the rankings based only on
ride experiences that occurred in 2002, and the top coasters based on those voters who
specified each of the six ride forces as their favorite follow the three year chart below.
