Michigan mega-woodie Shivering Timbers has reclaimed the #1 spot for the third time, having also topped the 1998 and 2002 polls. Shivering Timbers becomes only the second coaster to win the poll three times and remains the only coaster to re-ascend to the top spot after falling from it, something it has now done twice. Boulder Dash and Phoenix had best ever finishes at #2 and #3, Tremors fell two places to a strong fourth place, Dollywood's new Thunderhead did very well at #5, perennial favorite Raven placed 6th, 2003 #1 Balder placed 7th, The Legend placed 2nd in its park at #8, Megafobia placed 9th, and Japan's Aska had enough riders vote this year to legitimize its #10 placement. Balder was in general far less popular with those who had ridden it this year than with those who had only ridden it in its 2003 debut. As a result, Sweden's only wood coaster fell from a runaway #1 last year to #7 this year. 2004 was a good year for new wood coasters. Thunderhead accounted for Shivering Timbers' only loss in mutual rider voting on its way to a fifth place finish. Timber Falls' Avalanche placed 12th, Clementon Lake's Tsunami 24th, and Farup Sommerland's Falken 53rd. Cypress Gardens' new Triple Hurricane and the two Australian Wild Mouse rides that were added to the ballot had too few riders take the poll for placement. #3 Phoenix, #15 Vancouver's "Coaster", and #18 Comet (NY) were again the top wood coasters in the "Over 40" division. Comet dropped 8 places, likely due to recent trackwork that removed some of the ride's signature forces. Coney Island's 1927 Cyclone came in at #26. These designs have been able to withstand the tests of time. Coaster, which is located at its original site, is still threatened with possible relocation (or worse) in the near future. Find out more about Coaster's plight at http://www.pne.bc.ca/futureBackground.htm and http://www.city.vancouver.bc.ca/pnepark/ It is quite amazing to note the number of rides originally designed and built in the 1920's, 1930's, 1940's, 1950's, 1960's and one from as long ago as 1917 still in the top 60. Equally amazing is that over 3/4 of the top 50 rides did not yet exist in 1994. Silverwood and Holiday World both have arguments for being the park with the best wooden coaster duo. Tremors edged Raven in ranking and won the mutual rider comparison handily, but The Legend finished well ahead of Timber Terror and won that mutual rider comparison. Among the top five as compared by mutual riders: Shivering Timbers edged Boulder Dash 40-38, was preferred to Phoenix 50-40, edged Tremors 23-22, and lost to Thunderhead 25-30. BD was preferred to Phoenix 53-44, Tremors 23-15, and lost to Thunderhead 25-33. Phoenix was preferred to Tremors 24-17 and tied Thunderhead 30-30. Tremors was preferred to Thunderhead 17-6. At the other end of the poll, California's Grizzly easily outdistanced the competition for last place. The spreadsheet with the ~15,000 head-to-head comparisons between the 179 coasters (including fav steel) that had riders take the poll this year will be available by December 13th from the website http://BestRollerCoasterPoll.com. All ballots (anonymized) will also be available by December 13th. This delay will hopefully prevent bandwidth problems for the website. The "Favorite Steel" coaster would have placed first this year if it were included in the final results. In general, the rankings of those coasters with more riders will be more likely to truly reflect the popular sentiment about a coaster. There is a * in place of a rank for coasters with < 5 riders. A blank line has been inserted where > (2/#coasters) WinPct gaps exist. The program was run twice. Once excluding "My Favorite Steel" to get the results for the wooden coasters so that they would not be affected by it, and once including "My Favorite Steel" so it could be placed amongst the wooden coasters. This year the floating variety beat the more forceful "abrupt" airtime. Sensation of Speed edged Out of Control Feeling/Directional Changes for third and both were preferred to Lateral Forces and Positive G's/Loops. These results are less meaningful as there are MANY pairings of coasters that no rider had ridden both of this year. As you can see, our poll respondants had ridden an average of 17.2 wood coasters this year. That sounds good until it is realized that when there are about 1/2 as many ride experiences it causes there to be an average of about 1/4 as many people who had ridden each pair of coasters (this year vs. ever). Therefore, I want to be very clear that the following results based on only 2004 ride experiences have a much greater margin of error and are only included here because they may be of some limited additional interest to some enthusiasts who want more information on how a particular coaster was perceived by those who rode it this year. For what it's worth, it appears that The Legend really impressed those that rode it this year.
