Re: HS Hockey Podcast - December 15

Fun Podcast, I made sure to check it out when I saw that you were going to be talking about Demographics in hockey. Karl, I still remember reading your original article about it a few years ago and really enjoying it. I actually just graduated from the U of M recently with an Urban Studies degree an...

Re: AA Rankings for 12/8/19

I know they were called the Cougars. They use to sell Edina West T shirts at General sports around 2010.
Not sure what the colors were, but the shirts made it seem like their colors were still Green and Gold. The green might have been a bit darker than East's but that is my best guess.

Re: state championships

I don't either. You can count them when you combine schools except when you were once two schools. It does seem unfair to have two chances at a title and count those the same as the rest of the schools that had one. Just like I've seen one or two places where WBL tries to count the Mariner 2nd plac...

Re: state championships

Without looking- Which six teams have won five or more state championships? I do remember from about 10 years ago that people from Roseau don't recognize Edina East's as an Edina state championship. I don't either. You can count them when you combine schools except when you were once two schools. I...

Re: Minnesota Article on Eden Prairie

What's interesting about EP is that their numbers are much lower compared to their Lake & District 6 counterparts. EP seems to have very good higher end talent at the AA teams, but not even close to the depth of the lower teams of the others. They don't have a Pee Wee A team, with their 2nd team pl...

Anyone see the game?

Looked at the box score and it was 5-2 for team USA. Their first 3 goals were scored by Minnesota kids.

I’m with Schozty. This is not anywhere near a big deal to me. The kid wants to play with the friends he grew up with. Every time some kids leaves early for juniors half you freak out about how there is nothing better than playing with the kids you grew up with, and here a kid is trying to do that b...

Re: Which Varsity programs utilize their JV teams well?

Well, I’ll give one example from last year Most astonishing that Kevin Delaney made Edina varsity as a senior, having played JV until then. I think he ended up with 25 points or so , And was a real sparkplug . The Edina graduating class from 2015 comes to mind. Guys like Perunovich, Meyer, Fuss, Mi...

Re: Will Curt Giles ever get his due?

I have always been a Giles guy, I think if you listen to his interviews he shows that he really cares for the kids. I always felt like that going to his camps and during tryouts. He remembered me as a squirt and pee wee even when I was not one of the highly skilled kids. He has won 4 titles in 10 ye...

Re: AA school fielding an additional A team

This does bring up an interesting thought exercise. Could Edina's (or Maple Grove's, or Minnetonka's, etc) Junior Gold team win Class A state? I don't know about Junior Gold, but this system seems basically the same as the current youth system. Warroad won this year, but beat Edina in the Semi fina...

Re: Pridictability of Class AA - state

But my point in all this is that making a prediction that 4-6 teams will dominate and be in every state championship game is such an easy prediction because that has happened in every decade besides one. You're contradicting your own facts: The 2000's - 9 different champions The 2010's - 7 teams wo...

Re: Pridictability of Class AA - state

way off on South St. Paul numbers. Their enrollment is 799, not 1700. I see, I didn't realize they counted 6-12 grade in the enrollment numbers I saw. Regardless, I think the point still stands that hockey is too expensive and the fact that numerous first ring suburbs can't field a team shows this.

Re: Pridictability of Class AA - state

Interesting backstory on the A/AA split and its advocates. (I was in diapers when that happened. We're at the point now where a couple generations have no memory of single-class hockey.) It made me wonder how many more teams would've gone to state over the past decade if we still had single class h...

Re: Pridictability of Class AA - state

All the talk about going back to 1 class seems odd too when you think about how everyone loved the Greenway story this year. If we are in a one class system, for Greenway to get to state, not only do they have to beat Hermantown, but also a Elk River/Cloquet quality opponent and then probably East. ...

Re: Pridictability of Class AA - state

My crystal ball says this (and it's right 50% of the time...The other 50% of the time it's wrong) Over the next 3,5,10 years I think you will see the same 4-6 teams dominating the class AA tournament Yes we all know 8 teams get invited and yes a team like a Lakeville South or say Burnsville will oc...

Re: First report for next season

1AA- I think it is South's probably to lose. They seemed to have a pretty good group of sophomores while North loses a few of their better players. I hope Century and Hastings can take a step up and somehow win this section. Hastings returns 9 of their 11 leading scorers and they had that great goal...

My wife had a great comment about the game. She said, "The players who made the big plays were the ones who had nothing to lose." Colby was running around like a dog after a squirrel. No fear. Schultz? Same thing, though in a different way. Holt...a sophomore who just ripped a shot w/o thinking. Wa...

Edina woke up in the third. They were lucky Jensen missed the open net, and they were a little loose in back, but I could feel they were gonna get one and next thing you know they had two. On a night where the top guys were maybe just off the mark, the role players of Edina come through. Big equaliz...
