How long til Grand Rapids/Greenway co-op?
Greenway has been outscored 7-78. How much longer will Greenway last? If they co-op with Grand Rapids, imagine the talent pool some years with Rapids, Greenway, Nashwauk-Keewatin. That's a large area to choose players from.

Only thing is if they do a co op, none of this Grand Rapids/Greenway lightning crap and combining colors. Leave it black and orange and change the name back to Indians, what the hell is a thunderhawk anyways.

Hopefully this will never happen. Greenway has too long standing a tradition and a uniqueness. Besides, you can't go combining my favorite Range team with...um....my not-quite-favorite Range team

Now Duluth Central and Denfeld, on the other hand...

Lee
____________
Message Board arsonist since 2005

Re: How long til Grand Rapids/Greenway co-op?
Excuse me, but Grand Rapids/Greenway Lightning is not crap and either are the colors. This co-op has produced one of the best girls hockey teams in Northern Minnesota so grow up and get over it. Maybe boys are a little jealous of the girls success so far. The girls are all fine with it and having fun and that's what it should be about.

Re: How long til Grand Rapids/Greenway co-op?
Not only have they been outscored 78-7, but every one of their 7 games has had the mercy rule (a.k.a. "running time") invoked in the 3rd period. Actually, only Warroad let them stop the clock in the 3rd, but for only 3:10. 119:00 3rd Period Minutes Played, 115:50 of it on running time.

Back on the topic, I don't think we'll see a co-op in the near future. I would think that would be a last resort if the numbers aren't strong enough to field a team on their own. As far as I know, they still have enough in the youth programs to continue to do so. I suspect their strength of schedule will drop significantly in the future as some of the more powerful programs aren't going to want to keep games like this on the schedule if they can help it. They probably should pick up more of a class A type schedule like Virginia, Eveleth, and Hermantown. Hopefully this is just a down time in their program and not the beginning of the end. It would be sad to see that much tradition go by the wayside.

Re: How long til Grand Rapids/Greenway co-op?
One of the best teams in northern MN behind Hibbing/Chisholm, Hibbing/Chisolm/N-K, C-E-C, Warroad, Bemidji, Roseau, Warroad/Roseau, School of the Blind Buddhists, Marshall/Proc./Herm., Duluth East, Duluth Dynamite, and D. Central/Denfeld. Lightningfan: GR/Gway co-op and girls hockey is not one of the best in northern MN so shhhh, mkay.
Anyways, I have the inside word that these teams are set to co-op the year after hell freezes over and Hitler is the captain of the Hell Demons.

Re: How long til Grand Rapids/Greenway co-op?
If the girls won a state title who would give a crap. Watching Crosby/Ironton vs. Rogers would be more exciting.

Yeah sports are all about fun, Lighningfan. Playing football at Hibbing I know all about fun. And let me tell ya going 7-20 in my 3yrs of starting is sooooo fun. Yeah I put football was fun on the stupid little MSHSL survey, too. Ya know why it was fun? Cuz playing on a crappy team got me a D-1 scholarship at a beyond crap team(go U-Idaho!). I hate ripping on people on here, but c'mon L-fan! Iron Rangers play to win, regardless of generation, and Rapids and Rapids/Greenway girls hockey doesn't know what winning is...unless winning means Section 7AA runner-up in 2003. But congrats on almost beating a Hibbing/Chisholm team that for the first year since they've had a team doesn't have a real scorer KUDOS!

Op yours
As has been stated previously, Greenway has a competitive group coming up who are now first year bantams. Next year will be another tough one, but after that, Greenway should be able to compete. There are two keys for Greenway keeping their own competitive program. First, they need to really go after the N-K kids. N-K has a lot of very good athletes. They always have good football and baseball teams. The N-K folks have to feel they are getting a fair shake when tryouts happen. That trust isn't there yet. Secondly, the promise of improvement in the local economy needs to become a reality (coal gasification plant, reopening of mines). This will not only bring in more families, but more stable families. I hope I never see the day of a co-op between Greenway and Grand Rapids. I'd rather have a year or two of running time games than for Rapids to be part of Greenway.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... reenway at: 12/22/05 9:14 am

Ol Greenie is Right on
Ol' Greenway is correct Greenway will never co-op with Rapids. Their Bantams are good and they have solid squirt and mite numbers to boot. So do not expect a cooperative partnership anytime soon.

Re: Ol Greenie is Right on
If Greenway is going to get numbers back, I hope they come back to 7AA. I think they're stuck in 7A for 3 total seasons, right? It does seem odd to look at GR's schedule and the Greenway games are just an afterthought, instead of games that were circled.

Re: Ol Greenie is Right on
But if Grand Rapids goes to 7a then we would have the old section back, just like old times

Re: Ol Greenie is Right on
I would not expect a co-op of the hockey team, but you may see a combination of the school districts, with one high school and 2 middle schools etc...

Re: Ol Greenie is Right on
GR19. There is no time commitment for Greenway to stay in its own class. The four year commitment only applies to a team moving up in class.

Say, for example, South St. Paul decides their girls should go back to AA. I'm not sure if they can do it for 200-7, because they're not realigning sections next year, but for 2007-08, they could.

Re: Ol Greenie is Right on
If they move to 7A I'll quit watching HS hockey.

Raiders and Chickens
Lets face it, it would be a total tragedy if Greenway combined with Rapids....but it's in the future and I think we all know it. Maybe not next, maybe not in 5 years but the time will come.

I personally would HATE to see it, with all the tradition that is associated with Greenway. It would be like Warroad and Roseau combining.....just isn't right.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/grin.gif ALT=" >D">
www.rebelhockey.com

It may have been rumor but I have heard that the school board members have considered a co-op school at Warroad/Roseau.

Numbers and money take precedent over hockey (or any sport) rivalries.

Finances may dictate
Doesn't matter how good the first year Bantams are or how many mites there are. If the school district keeps struggling for dollars from overall declining enrollment this may happen sooner than later. You'll probably see them keeping youth hockey but if the HS can't afford it...the girl's are already doing it, there's their precedent or excuse whatever you want to call it.

Re: Finances may dictate
I don't know much about the situation up there, but from what I've heard about Greenway's tradition and the GR-Greenway rivalry, my guess is any school board member in Coleraine that voted to coop hockey with GR wouldn't have much of a chance of reelection.

Wasn't the reason for the coop in girls more of a numbers issue than budget?

Re: Finances may dictate
The girls situation is much different. Girls hockey was introduced as a new sport. Both schools needed the numbers to field a team, similar to the Eveleth-Gilbert/Virginia/Mountain Iron-Buhl/Mesabi East girls program. That's a major difference from a program with 50+ years of rich tradition. The only way I see these programs combining is if the actual school districts combine (and that doesn't look likely in the near future either) as mentioned earlier in this thread.

I see that Hermantown has been added to the list of running time losses tonight, 11-1. Just looking through their schedule, and considering the way I Falls and Eveleth have been playing of late, the only game I see being competetive for the rest of the year is New Richmond. --And I only say that because I don't know a thing about them. Maybe Bemidji in the last game of the year, but again, I don't really know what Bemidji has. Other than that, it looks like Ely in the play-in game for sectionals could be their first legit shot for a "W".
