I wouldn't want to be the scheduler. I would want the A and AA at the X and B at Mariucci, but I know most of you would want AA at X, A and Mariucci, and B at either Amsoil/Sanford/HBNHC/Verizon. I think Amsoil would be best in that case as Duluth is the biggest city left, and it gives the North something to do.

AA/A at the X would be something like Two games a day per class for the first week Wed-Sat, then run it like it is now for the second week. You lose, you're done. (3/4 place game plays)

B can just be one week, all up in Duluth. Split the first round up through the first 2 days, then quarters on Friday, then Finals on Saturday. (3/4 place game plays)

No thanks. I enjoy the Section semi-finals and finals too much to see them go away. The passion to get to the tournament has created more great Section final games over the years than the actual State Tournament games in my opinion. I also really miss the Section finals at the Coliseum

Having only one Class A team in the top-level tournament feels counterproductive. Yes, Hermantown is “forced” to play up with the big boys under this scenario, but teams like SCC, Mahtomedi, etc., who are basically at the level of HT, but don’t have quite the schedule strength, are excluded from the main event. To me, having these smaller teams is more desirable than seeing teams like Eagan or Benilde, who already have a chance to play their way into the AA tourney under the current structure and are only about the third best teams in their respective sections.

I can understand the arguments against this format, but EVERY game here would be a GREAT matchup. I would imagine most years there would be at least two outstate teams in the top 16 just like this.

Another idea that is kind of a happy medium between current system and a rankings based system:

Top 8 ranked teams are auto-bids, and the remaining teams play out their regular sections minus the teams that are already there. Winner of each section round out the other 8 teams of a 16 team tournament. Do this for A and AA.

This would allow other 7A teams to go to state and not care that much about Hermantown. It would also ensure at least one team from every part of the state. The downside would be when section 2AA or 6AA have 3 auto-bids and then their section playoffs only have 5 teams... still would be potentially just as hard to win that section as it would be to win 1AA 😉

I like this. Have AA at the X/Mariucci and A at Amzoil/Old DECC. Gives both tournaments space, you can broadcast A if you really want too. Plus it would really incentivize teams to move up to AA to get the big time venues/tv air time.

So.......what ranking system do you use? They all have their flaws.

I think you gotta ask the coaches that. or maybe even hire some stat firm to come in and develop something. Have them watch a year or two, and work something out. I don't think there will be too much landscape change in the next couple of years.

It would be hard to do something like the major sports leagues, where they have their sections, essentially, and you can force schedules through that. But we have the various conferences, and a different number of teams in both conferences and sections, as well as independents.

Good question. For my idea above coaches vote? Each coach ranks the top 10 teams not in their section. That way you don’t have coaches picking all teams from their own section to give themselves an easier path in sections.

Strength of schedule would be one of the biggest factors and could create scheduling nightmare. Because of this, there is no way you could have section alignment and would also cause some major travel issues. Think about teams like EGF. While they try play a very competitive SOS, they still have to play so many sections games against marginal competition (Crox ×2, LOW, Park Rapids, DL). What do you replace that with? Two more trips to the Cities at 6 hours each way. Then, what competitive Metro teams are going to want to drop their Edina's, Tonka's, etc... to play a "A" school as it doesn't help them.
While I love the idea, when I think about the reality of something like this I dont see how it could ever happen. It would absolutely destroy the small towns that are trying to survive (see every non-metro section as there are alot).
Great idea, just doesn't make sense to me as you think about the problems it would create in the State of Hockey.

Mark, what "problem" are you trying to solve? I think the present setup works very well.

I tend to agree. This would be a great holiday tournament. For the postseason...... I like it the way it is a lot better.

Sounds similar to the Tier 1/Tier 2 tournament style they tried. Now I am too young to remember that experiment, but I thought everyone hated it

No problem, just trying to generate ideas and a little chatter before sections.

Love it!! The current system doesn't allow the best teams state wide to participate in the state tourney, rather the team that comes out of each section.
