Talking about blowouts and such have gotten me to think about the main places they occur; sections.
I used the info kept on minnhock and looked at the section games since 99. That's 9 years, which means 72 total section competitions per class.
In that time, in AA, there have been:
-4 finals match ups with a 5, 6, 7, or 8 seed
-37 1 vs 2 finals match ups
-1 #4 seeds win
-6 #3 seeds win
-6 #2 seeds win
-59 #1 seeds win
The numbers in Class A are a little more one sided:
-2 finals match ups with a 5, 6, 7, or 8 seed
-37 1 vs 2 finals match ups
-0 #4 seeds win
-6 #3 seeds win
-5 #2 seeds win
-61 #1 seeds win
Since 1999, Holy Angels' 1999 team has been the only team not a #3 seed or higher to make it to state. There are some first round upsets, but they have never turned into anything more than that. Why are we having these top teams crush the bottom teams? What does that prove?
My suggestions:
1. Extend the season one game and have a top 4 bracket and a consolation bracket. We could also play a 3rd place game.
2. Have the top 4 teams play a round robin to go to state, then the bottom teams do the same.
Yes, there would be some figuring out to do with sections with more than 8 teams, but all the games would be quality games (relatively speaking).

Even though I know this probably will never happen, I think it would be sweet to do the tournament march madness style; 4 brackets each with teams seeded 1-16 in each bracket and the elite 8 would be the state tournament at Xcel. I like this because we wouldn't have match-ups like Edina vs. Jefferson early on in the tournament and there also wouldn't be undeserving teams like Lakeville South and other teams in easy sections making it to state.

I guess the biggest thing (in my opinion) my ideas do is let teams that have no chance of making it still have some games they can be competitive in. We let everyone into the playoffs; the point is to let kids play the game they love. Well, why let them get crushed in one game when we could let them be competitive in two or three?
Just my two cents.

I agree! That would be sweet! I personally would love it. But it could take away a bit from some rivalries. The newfound rivalry between Blaine and Centennial could be less intense. The Hill Murray and White Bear Lake as well. I'm sure there are others.Roseauverrated wrote:Even though I know this probably will never happen, I think it would be sweet to do the tournament march madness style; 4 brackets each with teams seeded 1-16 in each bracket and the elite 8 would be the state tournament at Xcel. But more deserving teams could make the "Elite 8!" Jefferson, Edina and Holy Angels as well as Cenetnnial and Blaine. Avoiding any upsets of course.
It also would cost more money as there would be alot more traveling throughout the state.
But the way it is now, obviously ain't too bad. As it is one of the premire high school tournaments (any sport) in the country!
