you could almost label those mid 90's duluth east teams as being from the range based on their extensive recruiting efforts done up there.
We're also all forgetting about Greenways Tier II state championship.
Were #65! Go Green!

Yah right. Duluth is 90,000+ people or so and all the hockey players are recruited to go to 2 schools. Real "up north" feel to it.

I dont care who won Class A.
If Anoka wins this year, you can bet your bippy that they'll be "claimed".
Ah, do they have a lot of Catholics?

Anoka is the "Halloween Capital of the World"... Pagan holiday. I don't think the Catholics are in control.

GO TORNADOES!!!

Your beloved Rams won the state title last March. I think everyone here knows that. It won't mean squat when they face a below-.500 team from Austin in Round 1, just like Edina's gaudy 27-2 or 28-1 record (assuming they win 2AA, which is no small task considering it isn't an easy section like 8AA or 1AA) won't help them in a tilt with Cretin-Derham Hall.
I agree with that..as revised.
Is this a concession?

There are 71 teams in AA. So packerboy - it sounds like you are suggesting that just Roseau, Grand Rapids and maybe Cloquet count as northern schools. So it's those 3 schools against the other 68 teams for who has won the most state championships?!?! Yeah, those sound like real even odds. It's like saying the NFC north doesn't have as many Superbowl victories as the rest of the NFL combined, therefore it must produce weaker teams.

The north doesn't have the numbers, but it has the quality year after year.

No they all count as northern schools.

The fact that most of them play in A is significant but it doesnt really mean that there are only 3 Northern schools.

Are you sure Grand Rapids population doesn't disqualify them from being counted as Northern? That leaves 2. :D

If Roseau played down in the cities ever weekend to combat PS2 whiners then there would be only one. All we need to do is find a way to eliminate the remainder and everything will be happy in the world!

And you know what they say about opinions....

Sorry, couldn't help myself. Must be all the negativity in the thread.

Honestly, it's par for the course as far as "polls" by "experts" ranking teams and deriving PS2. Every year the northern teams are thought to be not that strong or deep, and quite a few of those years there's at least one of those teams in the finals. Here's to hoping a Falls/Warroad Final in A and Roseau taking the cake in AA (pun intended).
Not every Tom, Dick and stmartin can be taken seriously.

The big fallicy is that somehow "northern hockey" is either inferior or superior to "city hockey", like the two are different. City teams dont get good because of numbers. They get good the same way Roseau does. Finding enough kids who put in enough time and hard work to excel at the sport. Theres nothing in Roseaus water or genetic pool that makes them good. They work hard. And THEN they go play shinny. Same with city kids.

agree

Finally commom sense. Neutron 14 hit the right button.

Get 20 players committed to a sport. Have a few studs to carry the load. Get the team believing in themselves. Get the extra icetime to devlelop the necessary hockey skills. Make them believe the TEAM comes first.

You will win wherever you play, North or South!

You do all that in your youth programs then attend a private school & get the cahnce to play in the high school hockey tournament.

Not sure what a private school "cahnce" is but kids should stay and play for their community!

Ah but numbers do make a difference Neut...
I agree fully that a metro kid and a northern kid get better the same way by playing more and dedicating themselves to the game...
But look at it in pure math statistics, there is more of a chance that 20 top end players develop out of the 100-125 trying out at Jefferson, Burnsville, Edina, etc. than from the 25-30 that try out in Roseau. It's just that simple... Sorry its just simple math...

I would agree with your math, if all 100-125 kids are being developed, but all we know that isn't the case. The 15 A squirts in any program get better, the B's and C's not so much. Move on to Peewee's, and you might get a few kids who go from B to A. Bantams just a couple. In all these steps, there is the occasional kid whose driven to succeed, but its rare. Usually movement between them is due to the A kid falling back.

The numbers game is greatly exagerated. Especially for a program that doesn't have much competition from other sports for the top athletes.

Good coaching at all levels, facilites, and 15 dedicated kids and you have a hell of a program.

I agree w/ you again Neut, but just add to it, remember there are 3 years of players (sometimes a couple freshman) to choose from at High School...
10 A players (Youth Program Feeders) - Senior Class
2-3 B players - Senior Class
12-13 players - Junior Class
12-13 players - Sophmore Class
2 Freshman, possibly
So, that means 36-41 top end players trying out for the High School team each year...

My thought is that easier to find more Grade A diamonds when looking at a greater number of diamonds...

Very misleading numbers again. Year to year you have the same kids so you only need to replace what you lose to graduation. So ask yourself how many impact Seniors Roseau will lose this year. 6? 7? Thats what you need to replace.

Nice diamond analogy, but it assumes a equal distribution which we've already put to bed.
