Girls teams should be able to compete in any tournament they want. They must be talented to compete as well as they did. Results don't lie. However, I am not that suprised. Girls of this age (11-13) generally speaking have already started to mature well before many boys at that age. Also I have noticed that that talented girl players move there feet better than slightly less talented boy players. Especially on the boards where boys get used to and are coached to use their bodies. The key take away here is ALL players should move their feet. I have sons and daughters that play. Let the girls have their fun and let their parents feel good about themselves for beating a boys team. I am confident you won't see the parents pushing their daughters to play the boys in a couple of years. I just hope the girl's team had the best intentions in entering the tournament. Because you can't look into someones heart I think we just should take them on their word.

They are not a C team rec hockey team and in fact came in a close 2nd in this year international cup and 3rd in Pepsi Cup. However, the other boys teams were more AA calibre in general. All I will stress is the girls team was very talented and had full rights to be in this tournament as evidenced by their silver medal. They did full condact well and as long as you carefully scrutinize the tournament you enter, things went well. Forget sex here. Some weak boys teams have no business in certain tournaments and that should be the topic of discussion.
This was more like a showcase caliber tournament. These Northland Group teams get together and practice a few times and play in a couple of lower end tournaments over the summer. If anyone shows up with a real AAA team they usually do pretty well.

I think there are some good reasons that in girls hockey leagues there is no checking. Statistically girls get more concussions than boys which is another topic. I have seen plenty of boys square up to put a solid check on a girl and then let up. It is unfair to put the boys in the position of beating up on girls which if nothing else goes against social norms.
It is a fact that girls also sustain more joint and ligament sports injuries so subjecting them to playing with boys that may physically out match them does not make sense.
