Klatt must of got through to them. He was irate after the LVN game, way too many mistakes. They are playing sound in all 3 zones tonight.

Got through to them? They have played 2 periods of hockey. Do it for a few months them I'll listen.

FINAL: Grand Rapids 6 Edina 4.
The score would indicate it was a lot closer than in reality. Rapids completely dominated the 2nd period and suffocated Edina. Holum started in net and made some outstanding saves.
Way to go black and orange!

Nice win for Rapids. Hope they follow it up with another win against Eden Prairie. That would prove they are a top 5 team.

Tough loss for Edina.
First period, they played decent, but took too long to get into the game, missed on a couple of great opportunities early (which cost them the game in the end) , made a mistake which led to GR getting a shorthanded goal but came back strong on the forecheck putting GR's defense in trouble several times with a great pressing in the offensive zone.
Second period is when Edina decided not to show up, no pressing, no energy, no forecheck, leading to GR having time to make great plays, getting lots of offensive zone time, settling in front of their net and deflecting shots.
GR took advantage of that, scoring lots of goals.
Third period, Edina came back strong, pressing again and getting some offensive zone time but again they took 3 or 4 minutes to get going in the third and therefore only played hard for 12 mins, scoring 2 goals in the process.
Overall Edina dropped the game in the second period when they decided no to show up at all, they played like garbage, that period cost them the game.
Not to say GR didn't play well, they had some great plays and ultimately they deserve the win because they decided to show up in that second period and actually play hard with a great pressing.
Impressive performance by GR, they struggled a bit early but had an amazing 2nd period and a good 3rd.

I wish I got to see more of this game, but I was pretty busy working at the rink. It was bizarre because I saw about 3-4 minutes in the first and the second periods and Edina looked okay. The stretch I saw in the first they actually played really well, it was 0-0 at the time and when I left GR scored a minute or two later. In the second I must of caught the only decent stretch all period. It was 3-1 at that point. They didn't look good, but they weren't terrible like described for the rest of the period.
They were just missing passes when I was watching and coming close to making plays, but they weren't working out. I saw them try a long stretch pass that failed 2 or 3 times in the short time I watched.
Overall, I am not worried about Edina. They are young, but talented. By February I think they could be dangerous. I like the Copeland, Scherer and Walker line. They are a bit thin on D (I noticed Pugh got the call up), but if Brinkman can come back and be as big an impact as people say, who knows what could happen.
I will be up there working again tomorrow, but I am planning on sitting down to watch the games on saturday, so I should have more insight then.

A few additional thoughts on this one:
o a healthy Adams makes a big diff. The kid has been greatly underrated with so many big names on the Thawks
o. why Giles scheduled 12 days between games in mid Dec is beyond me. Took a long time for Hornets skaters to get into game flow , and goaltender hadn't seen a game puck since Tuftes winning Ot goal on Dec 5. Maybe part of reason he allowed 5 in first 2
O. Rapids dominated 2.5 periods. Letdown in last half third to allow Hornets to bring back to 2 goal margin and SOGS about even. Proving you can never have too big a lead over Edina
0. Along with 5 goals, a big part of GR success in first 2.5 was they wouldnt let Edina forwards cleanly breakout out of defensive zone. Or if they did, they didn't get cleanly thru neutral ice and across blue line. The GR forwards simply played a great transition game, they shutdown lanes and kept blades on the ice to deflect passes. Least that's the way I saw it
O Rapids showed greater depth, something rarely case against Edina
O. Great goaltending by Rapids senior
O. Nice to see Calvin Pugh back skating varsity, after a year off due to concussion
O. Have never seen a game and will likely never again see a game featuring three sophomore Gopher commits
O. Agree with greenway that a win over EP puts Rapids in top 5 .

O. Giles has done this at least the last couple of years, I would guess last 3 or 4 years, nobody had a problem with it when they win. Which, they have mostly won this game.
O. I agree, the few minutes I saw, I thought Rapids had pretty good forward depth.
O. Goalie for rapids tonight was Holum, who I believe is a sophomore
O. If you go to the game on Saturday you will see three gopher commits again. Mittlestedt, Walker and Phillips. Actually, you have three chances to see just that combo.

I don't think GR dominated 2.5 periods.
First period was kind of a wash, if anything Edina played a little better. Sure Edina made a few mistakes but they were pressing more than Rapid and GR were in trouble more often than not. Except for that great shorthanded goal they were not that dominant. Overall I would give the first to Edina , not by much though but better effort than GR.
Second was ALL GR
Third was kind of a wash as well. Both teams played decent.

Phillips was benched and didn't play in the third period. He went directly to the locker room skipping the handshake line after the game so I assume it wasn't injury related.

That was a nice win for GR since it was important for them to play well on the road against a very good team.
It will be interesting to see how they do Friday night against a team that they have never beat. (at least not in this tournament)

GR dominated for 2 1/2 periods before letting off the gas in the final 6 minutes. 1st 8 minutes off the game Edina could not get the puck out of their own end. Not enough scoring depth on Edina and the D and Goalie are very questionable beyond Phillips and Johnson. Still look to see Edina get much better over the season and be tough out come playoff time. GR showed giod depth up front, still a question on the D. Will need to settle on goalie as season goes forward.

Green 4, my point was 3 gopher SOPHOMORE commits . Extremely rare. Only again if these two meet at the X
Stand corrected on Holums class year, great game!

Edina was dominated no matter what some Hornets fan wants to make you believe. I have great respect for their program, but last night Edina had a few good scoring chances throughout the game but they never had sustained pressure. Rapids had Edina pinned in their zone for stretches longer than I can remember. And it's not just that Adams makes a difference, but this is really the first week they have the entire top line healthy. Being able to put Miller on the second line with Hain and McLaughlin is part of what makes a big difference. For Edina I have no doubt they'll be a team like Duluth East that is not a desirable opponent come sections. If Edina was in the old 2AA I'd pick them to go to state, but being in the new 6AA with BSM and Wayzata, especially BSM, I say Edina is watching from the stands at the X this year.

Edina 5 (en)
Rapids 3
Stats must be hard. 41 points combined for Mattson, Adams, Bischoff with 5.5 missed games combined between them. 15 points from other seniors. 56 of the teams 102 points. With a loaded younger group? Seniors have been just fine.

Exactly.
Just because you are not a high school student and not a college student, anymore; you have a real job; and a real wife (not the blow-up variety, is she?); does not mean you can stay away. Especially with Rapids having the best year in the history of Rapids. I know, you cheer for Fargo South now but you still need to stop here once in a while.
