Everything you said about DE being tough at home in the playoffs is true & they very well may win 7AA in the end. Not to mention that Duluth's arenas in the section playoffs aren't in Andover's head. Me too...but they’ve done it before. Andover has a different mindset about playing at Amsoil than Elk River ever did. I finally had the chance to re-watch some of last year's state tournament and Andover's Mark Manney was interviewed. Mike McGraw asked him about having to go up to Duluth to play the section tournament with the implication that it was unfair to southern teams. We like to get on the bus and go and we prepared for it by going to Moorhead, Grand Rapids, and Duluth this year. We felt like if we had any chance to win the section we had to find a way to win on the road. So we played Elk River up there. We had an opportunity to move that game to the Cities. My input was that we’re going to go to Duluth because if we happened to beat a great Elk River team, we’d have no chance to beat Duluth East unless we’d already been in that building."
Of course, this hasn't been Elk River's posture. They hate hitting the road. This year, their furthest road game is in Edina, which isn't atypical in the odd-numbered years when they don't go to Duluth to play East. Last year, other than playing the Hounds in Duluth, their longest road trip was to Prior Lake, which again, isn't atypical for an even-numbered year. I realize Elk River and Prior Lake are at opposite ends of town, but it's not like going to Duluth, and it's much more about the mindset than the actual miles on the road.
By the way, it isn't just East that beats Elk River at Amsoil. Last year it was Andover, and in 2017 it was Grand Rapids.
Anyone who's been around athletics at any level, but particularly at the high schools and below, knows how important the mental approach is to success. So when Lee says "Duluth's arenas in the section playoffs aren't in Andover's head," he's absolutely correct, as evidenced by Coach Manney's comments--not to mention their performance in the finals last year.
To say all of this is one thing, but to actually beat a 218 team at Amsoil in a 7AA final game has yet to be done by either Andover or Elk River. Basically what I'm saying is I'll believe it when I see it. I hope I see it this year, because then maybe it will actually take away some of the Amsoil mystique. I hear you, Coach. Mindset? No one can be sure. The point is, I like Manney's approach of "we relish the opportunity." Maybe that's what Sarsland, Roberts, et al were telling the Elks all along, but that's not what we have heard on this board over the years, only complaints. And ER has also been reluctant to play outside the Metro when their most important games of the year are played elsewhere. Andover isn't following that approach either, as evidenced by Coach Manney's remarks. Whatever advantages the northern teams have at Amsoil, Manney is working to mitigate them. To be fair to ER, the 2017 lost to a GR team that went on to beating an EP team they lost to (the year before) which included CM in route to winning AA State.
