Monday, 2/4 Duluth East at Cloquet

Post by kniven »

Duluth East at Elk on Saturday. CEC at Forest Lake. Is there a possibility these two looking past those matchups at the big showdown on Monday. This will East’s last section game. Cloquet will still have Rapids upthere. I really don’t want to see Duluth East in the semi-finals, but that looks like a great possibility. But CEC will probably be playing Grand Rapids back to back with the last game of the season and first QF playoff game. What a nightmare of section playoff games.

Unfortunately I’ve been pretty sick today, and I probably won’t be at my usual post for this game tomorrow night. It will probably be a standing room only crowd. 2 very talented teams from the 218 going head to head in Cloquet. As always, “Good Things” for my CEC boys tomorrow night 🤓

Finally , i saw 3 decent forechecks by hounds

Rydo got away with switcheroo on cross check penalty

Anybody keep track of how long LL double pp shift was?

Karl-trivia Q

Is Rydo JJ RL the biggest forward line ever to strap on skates in Minn HS history?

Two calls CEC could have used : Boarding instead of charging on the hound penalty . Questionable tripping call on LL during faceoff

You think that warranted a 5 major? The kid popped back up. Just a big hit.

Cept he didn’t take 3 strides for a charge , so should have been a no call or boarding

Yup WM, roughly 5’11” for Notermann. Sometimes it was Max B, (a big kid) sometimes other kids played with Riley & Luke. BTW, Cloquet just got too cute tonight, especially when on the PP, can’t win when you score zero goals.

I still don't think it was worthy of a 5. You can give a roughing if you want. Charging does also consist of excessive hitting, in fewer words than the rule book. covering excessive distance or accelerating through a check punish the other player, is considered charging.

20 years ago, the hit would have lit the powder keg at the old DECC. full-on line brawl like back in the early 2000s and '90s. Man, I miss those days. You would have had a ton of east students there tonight and a decent police presence too. Not so much anymore. East kids seem to not care this year.

Well said That Guy.

You’ll see I said Jacks “could” have used the call, not they “should “have got the call

Similar memories for me, in my case going back
3 additional decades at the Curling Club!

I thought tonight was one of East's better efforts this season. They locked down defensively and gave Cloquet very little room. They played the way the guy behind the bench wants them to play, and were the the most physical I've seen them this season...sometimes to the point of excess, but it worked for them.

Cloquet, on the other hand, seemed really gun-shy...they had no shortage of PP opportunities, including a lengthy 5-on-3, but seemed content to pass very deliberately around the perimeter to set up rare, very predictable shots. They generated next to nothing 5-on-5 in the 2nd and 3rd periods. On the positive side, their goaltending never impresses me against other teams, but they've gotten good performances against East. Given the shot imbalance tonight, they needed that to keep this plausibly interesting.

If these two do meet in the 7AA semis, East will certainly be the favorite, but the Jacks are within striking distance if they can generate a bit more offensively.

I don't know that I've ever tracked line sizes, but yeah, I'd guess that Jeannette-Donovan-Jones is up there size-wise. I like the new lines, which are looking more and more settled. Guess Randolph took my advice from the "what's wrong with East" thread. :)

The East student turnout was disappointing. Even 2 years ago, they packed the visiting student section, but tonight's effort was feeble. These things have come and gone over the years, so it may just be a down group, but the good old days when you had to be there an hour early to get a spot aren't that far in the past. The Cloquet students turned out, but the community support beyond that wasn't all that impressive tonight. I do miss the good old days of this rivalry.

I was meaning to gain a respect for the tradition. Going back to the older days where even DE was a blue-collar esque team. And the physicality of the game back then, against CEC/GR/DD/DC. Man, I miss those kinds of games. Where the hatred ran deep, and es I actually mean hatred. Line brawls, handshake brawls. Those days are gone *Wink Wink Roseau/Warroad*

To have the grittiness that defined Minnesota Hockey, that's my dream. I look at our game as following the NHL, as it should if the aspirations of these amazing kids are the NHL, towards more skill and finesse rather than blue-collar grind it out games That also trends towards less school pride, and more politics and moving so the kids can get exposure.

This rivalry may mean a lot to the kids in CEC, as it should, but it, unfortunately, doesn't mean the same to DE kids. Where are the newspapers, and the student sections chanting back and forth? Kids getting in trouble for inappropriate chants or getting thrown out. Call me nostalgic, but hockey in mn isn't the same. And it never will be again.

That Guy - good thoughts indeed , but you got to admit most all aspects of the game itself get better and better by the year and decade . Can’t control the regular season fan base unfortunately . At least the 7AA playoffs and the X are as good as ever . And just look at the Rapids run in 2017, can’t get better than that

The games do get quite exciting with the talented scoring and slick plays. And I do agree 7AA tourney is as exciting as ever.
