The last game of last year Brad Johnson went out and fooled management, while an injured, publicly ridiculed (participation in Boat scandal) Daunte sat on the sidelines. Johnson pumped his fist after 1st downs and scores that afternoon to show the guys behind the glass that he could still lead and he could be a gamer in a contest that meant absolutely nothing.

Management bought it and hitched their wagon to a 38 year old man playing a game that 33 year olds are considered to be dinosaurs. They shipped out a much younger and talented QB for nothing in return. What management forgot is that scandals in the NFL go away and rebuilt knees will return to 100%.

Now what do they have? An older Johnson, an untested raw talent from an obscure college, and an undersized career backup that took snaps at Grand Forks Central.

I will admit that Daunte is somewhat of a puzzle. One year he is all pro and the next he is all nothng and injured. But Johnson was horrible.

I hope Jackson can be a player. He looked OK vs GB.

But IS pretty much summed it up.

If they would have gotten something in return for Daunte, I would not have made the statement.

Daunte is a puzzle. So is Jeff Garcia, he was taken off the scrap heap to be a backup, now he could find himself starting in a Superbowl. I don't get how these QB's can be so erratic. These adults are showing the consistency of adolescent males, that's not good when you are paying them like royalty.

I think a whole lot has to do with the team around them and whether the offensive plan suites them.

The other thing is patience with the athlete. Tark was exciting but a real nightmare for his first stint her but ended up being mentioned with the games all time bests when he came back here.

Yes they did let him go too soon. They also let him go for the wrong reasons. That Boat Scandal had more to do with it than anything. I believe the Vikes felt pressured to change their image and being that Daunte was squabling the most about his contract, he could be the fall guy. Not to mention that the beginning of his year was awful, but they were only five weeks in when they went on The Cruise. Had Daunte not gotten hurt, who knows what the last eight games would have been like.

I disagree that we should have kept him for a couple of reasons...first, how many times did you see him roll out on a third and 3 or 4 have open field to run for the first down and he tried to force a 8 to 10 yard pass to a covered receiver - it's moving the chains; punts don't do it. Also, he had the worst fumble to game ratio in the history of the NFL..seems like the guy hand small hands for a giant - I saw a funny one with him, Denny and Moss they were all wearing turbins and were all named Osama...Bin Fumblin, Bin Abortin and Bin Token. Besides the fact he had trouble finishing a season the last few years the injury bug had started to bite. I know we're not better at the position now but he wasn't the right guy anyway.

Daunte was a legitimate MVP candidate in '04, then by Oct 23 of the next season he was a bum. Today's NFL QB's go up and down like bobbers. He was very good in 3 of 6 seasons, and they were 8 over .500 collectlively in those seasons. With Daunte, I believe the Vikes could have competed every other year. Now with the garbage they currently have, they may dissappear altogether for the next 10 seasons. They are real close to becoming the Lions if they don't make better personnel decisions fast.

You've got the TD's, INT's but no fumbles and that may be his worst statistic.

Yes, the fumbles are well documented and I wouldn't even think of overlooking it just to be the devil's advocate. My stance is this, Culpepper with his drawbacks is a much better solution than anything they currently have or will have in the near future at that position.

If Daunte is not your realistic solution or criticism of a personnel mistake, I want to know who is? Afterall I could be swayed.

Daunte was no Peyton Manning.

But he had a lot of success and was still young.

I think one of their biggest mistakes was passing on a quarterback like Brodie Croyle and drafting Tarvarius Jackson. They need to spend their first rounder on solid QB for the future.

How bout the signing of Daunte Culpepper or ever making or keeping him as the starter. I'm so glad he is gone. A very athletic and talented individual, but he was missing it upstairs. He just didn't get the game the way a Manning or a Brady does.
