What ever happend to Guggenburger? We scrimmaged his team really early this year and he was a wall between the pipes. Not to mention he was yelling and having a good time during play. But I heard he left for Juniors and came back what happened there?

He is playing for richfield now. Had to sit out half the year. He is doing extremely well for them. He is a brick wall...amazing to watch. He stopped 48 of 51 shots against hill murray on saturday and almost upset them (HM won in OT 3-2), despite richfield only having 14 shots the entire game. He has a 1.221 GAA. He plays St.Thomas on thursday... should be a good one. He wasnt in nets last time they played and the cadets won 3-0. Might be a different story now

Chances are, not a single goaltender on this list qualifies as best goaltender in the state. First of all, these goaltenders are all on good, winning teams, and to have a good team requires a good defense and a good offense which not only keeps the number of shots to a minimum, but can score in close games. The best goaltender out there is probably on a sub .500 team, facing over 30 shots per game. Yes, the best goaltender probably has a losing record (see posts by Johnny_Murphy, HShockeywatcher, and State Champ 97, which are all in a row). Unfortunatley, Ellingson is the only one I have seen in person, and he is darn good. Some of the others I have seen on TV and was left unimpressed. Two things are necessary for being a good goalie -- positioning (training) and quickness (athletic ability). Would the kid from South St. Paul who is now at Duluth have been on that list (this time of year) or the kids from Shakopee who led a sub .500 team to the state tournament? No, they would not, but those may classify as the best goalies from their years.

Hjelle from the Falls faces on average about 35 shots per game. He has a 93.4% save percentage. thats a pretty darn good goaltender in my book.

I don't care how good his team is. Ellingson is in a class of his own. Hjelle and Yumu are in the next class.

i don't really care if he is the best goalie or even in the top ten for that matter
as long as he lets in fewer than the guy at the other end of the rink

i agree hardy is a good goaltender but im just saying he's not one of the top goaltenders in the state. and yes he did get the win saturday but i just thought it was funny how i predicted he'd give up 5 and everyone was pretty against that.

I didn't even think the Hawks were gonna win so it could have been 20-19 and I would still have been OK with it

How are we judging a goalie? If its save percentage? Hjelle. If its W/L?then its Hardy. If its goals per game? Ellingson. If its who carries a team to state? then its Reidar Jenson.
I'm sorry all of those in the south and the cities. i haven't seen any of the goalies down there so answer these questions for me.

Most Wins vs. Fewest losses?
Best save%?
Most shutouts?
Fewest goals per game?
Who gets better as the game becomes bigger?

boblee...after last night 5-0 Stillwater over Cloquet... Ellingson? Really? j/k, Well I think he had 28 saves...that's for those who rubbed off Hardy from Hermantown after he gave up 5 on what 40? saves vs. Hibbing?

Like it was mentioned... goalies have a bad night... any one of the goalies mentioned or those that have save percentages above .92 and/or GAA under 3 are all very good goalies.

I for one remember playing a goalie that ended up D1, the goalie had 45-50 saves and shut us out! His squad only managed about 15-20 shots, but scored 5! The goalie we had in wasn't D1 caliber(had a bad night), but the soph. on the bench was...What stats don't tell you is the quality of saves being made, power play shot/goal attempts, etc. I'm sure we left that goalie with a bruised midsection! ...because we got shots on goal, but never really challenged him.

When it gets to this point, a goalie should have his technique down at 17-18 years old. I truely believe it becomes MENTAL for goaltenders, from HS on. Moreso than other positions.

going off the stats these guys have, and taking into consideration the team they have in front of them plus the schedule each guy plays..Id rank them like this..

1. Yumu
2. Hjelle
3. Ellingson
4. Howe
