Class A Rankings 1-8-12
Posted: Sun Jan 08, 2012 11:56 am
The top 3 have shown this week to be quite close. They have now all beaten the #4 team in the state and all have deficiencies where anyone could argue with have them in any order.
After the top 3 there are 5 more that seem to be very close as well. After the top 8 it's really a crap shoot and will be moving around a lot the rest of the year I suspect.
Enjoy!
1. Breck (10-0) [6-0]
Breck played no games this past week and now the game which was the reason I bumped them up doesn’t seem to great because of Lakeville South’s past week.
This week: Thurs vs Minnehaha Academy, Sat @ Moorhead
2. St Thomas Academy (7-3) [5-0]
Yet another slightly worse GF/GA than Breck for a common opponent in the same week Hermantown beats a team by 4 away that the Cadets beat in OT at home. At the same time, their back up shut out the Packers and they beat a good Zephyrs team, both away. Two AA opponents this week before playing against Breck.
This week: Thurs @ Tartan, Sat vs Holy Family Catholic
3. Hermantown (12-0) [9-0]
The Hawks allow two goals in two away games against Class A teams as they end up beating Marshall by a much bigger margin that both Breck and St Thomas did earlier in the season. Two tough games this week; can they stay undefeated this week?
This week: Tues @ Grand Rapids, Fri vs St Cloud Cathedral, Sat @ Monticello
4. Duluth Marshall (10-5) [8-3]
Two class A shut outs along with a loss while outshooting Hermantown. Marshall keeps themselves solidly outside of the top 3 , but their 3 Class A losses are to the top 3 and their Class AA losses are to a couple top 15 teams by a total of 5 goals. After this week they will have played against all the other teams in the top 5. How will the Toppers do against the Eagles this coming weekend?
This week: Thurs vs Proctor, Sat vs Totino-Grace
5. East Grand Forks (9-3) [6-0]
There is one team in ND who is undefeated; two of their wins are by one goal against East Grand Forks. The Green Wave play two more ND teams this week as their schedule is still hard to determine much from. They did beat Totino-Grace early in the season by a good margin. If Totino plays close with or beats Marshall this week, should the Green Wave jump above them?
This week: Thurs @ Red Lake Falls, Sat vs Grand Forks Central
6. Totino-Grace (8-4) [6-3]
A one goal win over a tough Mahtomedi team and the Eagles bumped up a spot in the rankings this week. Three away games this week against teams who have all shown they can play against good teams.
This week: Mon @ St Louis Park, Thurs @ South St Paul, Sat @ Duluth Marshall
7. Mahtomedi (8-6) [4-4]
Two close losses to teams ranked above them this past week. The Zephys are clearly a top teams in the state and have played a good number of the top teams to prove it. This should be an easy week this week with one game in St Paul.
This week: Thurs @ St Paul Johnson
8. Thief River Falls (9-3-1) [6-2]
Getting beat by a good Moorhead team away doesn’t say much nor does beating a lower 8A team. The Prowlers play two lower 8A teams this week away before other top 8A opponents at home the following weeks.
This week: Tues @ Park Rapids, Thurs @ Crookston
9. St Cloud Cathedral (9-3) [9-2]
Just as many Class A wins as Hermantown as the Crusaders went on a long road trip beating a couple 8A opponents. The huge jump is due to one win and at this point the list is very fluid. Scores would suggest they won’t be able to hang in with Hermantown this Friday; we will see.
This week: Tues vs Mound-Westonka, Fri @ Hermantown
10. Warroad (7-5-1) [4-4]
The Warriors will probably be able to play with anyone in the state and still control their own destiny in 8A as they still have two games against both TRF and EGF, who they lost to in OT. Couple section 8 games this week should tell us more about the Warriors.
This week: Thurs @ Roseau, Sat vs Crookston
11. Rochester Lourdes (8-4) [6-3]
Following shutting out two teams by getting shut out by a top team shows little in one week. This should be a week for the Eagles to get back to winning.
This week: Tues @ Mankato West, Thurs vs New Ulm, Sat vs Eau Claire North
12. Blake (7-6) [6-1]
Two conference wins for the Bears this past week as they also lose to a Chanhassen team that is difficult to know much about. They play a Hutch team this week that has won the last three games at home by 1 goal. The only non-conference game outside of Hutchinson the Bears have left is Lourdes. Expect them to lose only a couple more this season and prove little.
This week: Tues vs Hutchinson, Thurs vs St Paul Academy
13. Delano (9-4) [5-4]
The Tigers move up solely because of teams above them last week moving down. This week we will find out how they should be ranked in 2A as they play their first of two against Orono.
This week: Tues vs Orono, Sat vs Mound-Westonka
14. St Louis Park (8-3) [6-1]
The shut out to Denfeld doesn’t look good at all, but with the parody in the teams after the top 10, beating Rogers is a great sign for the Orioles. Considering the section they’re in and not playing any of the other top teams, St Louis Park will need another good win to get a top 4 seed. How will they do at home against Totino-Grace tomorrow?
This week: Mon vs Totino-Grace, Thurs @ Robbinsdale Cooper
15. Rogers (7-5) [3-5]
Losing to St Louis Park was a bit of a surprise, but the Royals should continue to win in preparation for playing the Crusaders later in the season.
This week: Thurs @ Buffalo, Sat vs Sartell
Section Standings
3A
New Ulm (1-1)
Hutchinson (1-2)
Luverne (1-1)
Marshall (3-2)
Marshall throws a wrench in the section by losing to both Luvernce and Hutchinson and this section is really wide open now. New Ulm has the toughest schedule and the most they could show us on the state level but the fewest section games remaining.
6A
Alexandria (4-0)
Little Falls (2-1)
Fergus Falls (2-1)
Wilmar (1-3)
Prairie Center Area (0-2)
Sartell-St Stephen (0-3)
I added a couple teams because of what people last week said; Alexandria still is undefeated in the section although their 4 wins are all by 1 goal, including over Little Falls in OT. All of Little Falls losses are by one goal, 3 have been in OT, and they have won the last 6 in a row; with their schedule the Flies could lose less than 3 more games this season. The top seed will likely come down to when Alex travels to Little Falls at the end of January.
After the top 3 there are 5 more that seem to be very close as well. After the top 8 it's really a crap shoot and will be moving around a lot the rest of the year I suspect.
