18-0 final for HM. Announcer said they played a running time 2nd period. Has anyone ever heard of that before? Down 12 in the 2nd is running time? Could be the coaches agreed to it. Curious...

AFAIK Wken I was a the student Manager from 15-17 running time was only when you were up by 6 going into the 3rd. Maybe they doubled it and did it for the 2nd?

Believe the rule is when it is 10 goals or more in 2nd - its running time. For sure 6 or more in the 3rd.

Has Karl commented on the state of East? They’ve clearly trended downward so I’m curious to hear what the rumblings are. With a decent pipeline, how confident are they that they’ll get back on track. Even Marshall looks better at this point.

Simley has now lost to STA and HM by matching 18-0 scores. And I can say with certainty that neither were trying to run up the score. That said, I think this is a bad look. It's not fun for STA and Hill, and it isn't fun for Simley. When the coaches are agreeing to allow running time to start early, and aren't even resurfacing the ice between periods to hurry the game along, then the game shouldn't be played.

I applaud the Simley kids for going out there and competing. I'm sure they are great young men and they love the game just as much as anyone. That said, Simley is not a hockey school. They are a low-tier A program and shouldn't be forced to play AA private powerhouses just because they're in the same conference.

There should be class integrity; if you're an A program - guess who you're only going to play? A teams! If you're a AA team - guess who you're only going to play? AA teams! Or re-align conferences where you aren't mixing the two and forcing them to play each other.

Again, I applaud the Simley kids for going out there and competing.

What is interesting is Simley went into yesterday's game with a winning record. Seemed every shot found the net in the first period.

Their JV squads played before the varsity squads did, so that wouldn't work. Plus thats almost more insulting. They just shouldn't be playing, period. There is no situation where a AA team should be playing a A team when it's so wildly mismatched that they start running time early, don't resurface the ice, and the AA team has to slow way down so as not to embarrass the other team. HM & STA outshot them 128-16. And again, they were calling the dogs off almost immediately.

Well, yeah - thats because they're playing and are generally competitive against other low-tier A schools. Which is who they should be playing. I promise you that STA, Hill & Simley aren't putting eachother on their schedules except for because it's mandatory.

To be fair, we normally had those sort of games against Two Rivers. Then there was last year.

There is a way to solve this -- Hopkins has chosen not to play Edina and Tonka, even though they are in the same conference. Not that hard

No doubt. But I would argue that teams generally know what they have when schedules are being constructed. If Two Rivers, SSP, Tartan, Simley or anyone else wants to get together with the coaches of the likes of HM, STA, Edina, etc, and say "hey we like our team, think they're going to be good, and we'd like to look at scheduling you" then thats great. Clearly that's what has happened with, for example, Rogers. Rogers has gotten very good, has a good program, and the powers-that-be decided Hill & Rogers should play each other. They haven't played much, if ever, before this year. Thats not random - it's intentional. Because both believe they are good and would match up fairly well.

In other words, let the teams decide if they want to play each other. Versus this force feeding of loplided matchups that benefit no one.

And maybe I'm wrong and teams don't have to play everyone in their conference. Maybe it's up to conferences to decide. If teams universally don't have to play everyone in their conference (I was under the impression they had to), then at that point I would question the sanity of STA and Hill leadership for continuing to play in noncompetitive matchups with single-A teams.

I imagine that this is a matter of conference rules. And conferences are largely voluntary organizations; although the by state law MSHSL can the responsibility to jam an unwanted school into a conference, as was done with STA and the TRMC.

On this forum, we can get myopic and forget that there are other sports that effect things like transfer rules, etc. But for the most part, this seems like a pretty simple problem to solve. Just allow a team to opt out of playing a far superior opponent, Adults sometimes get hung up on rules and by-laws and forget the big picture. One thing we heard during the debate about B1GMistake hockey was that, "Well, the by-laws say if 7 schools in the conference sponsor a sport..." Well change the by-laws and keep the best college hockey conference in the country! Change the rules if it's for the greater good of the sport.

Were all Hill and STA goals scored on a backhand? I sure hope so.
