Not as much as you think... Players gear, ice time, and travel costs are covered by the team (sponsors). The team usually sets the players up with living quarters and board as well. And jobs are offered by the team as well for side cash. Not all junior teams are like this, BUT the caliber of player...

HS and college both need to get rid of the full cage, and give 5s for fighting. NCAA is seriously looking at the cage issue (again) but I don't think they'll change their minds on the fighting. That's OK, they get a game for fighting. The college game was calling the facemask rule last year a lot, b...

Phil Graber died while snow mobiling on Friday 2/4. Phil was past district 10 director, past sec-treas of MH, and current director emritus of Minnesotat Hockey. RIP Phil. Wow, I got to know Phil while I was the district rep for our association. He was respected for a reason. This is sad news indeed.

The physical maturity between peewee's is much less than the discrepancy between bantams. This reason alone should be reason enough as to why USA hockey would leave checking in its current form. My main reason for being against this is the physical development some players have around 14 years old....

I have to tell you all that I am SO glad that my kids are past youth hockey age. I was away from this board for quite a while, come back and am very happy that I can watch the fires burn from a distance. Here's another unbiased view. (unbiased in that I know BM from the past, Jamie and my son played...

Regarding the proposed change in checking. Totally crazy, dangerous, and not very insightful. Very disappointed in leadership on this one. They really need to pick up their game and focus on real solutions. Coaching camps, clinics, videos, roving experts from USA Hockey. It's disappointing because ...

This rule change came up in the college ranks this summer and was shot down. The reason the coaches hated the change is that in college you can't change lines if icing is called, and they used the reasoning that this would increase the potential for injury. However they did pass the rule that if a g...

Even Lucia's kid went to the USHL first. Check my timing, but things started to hit the crapper when John Hill joined the staff. Him chasing Guentzel out of the picture only made things worse. I think Hill is a bigger problem that Lucia is. I agree 100%. Lucia has shown he can win everywhere he has...

Noticed they have 3 committments from the NAHL. Jake Parenteau, Tom Serratore and Jared Larson. All 3 will be coming in next year, along with Bjustad and Alt. Anybody else for sure? Tom Serratore is a USHL product, 2 years in Sioux City and one in Youngstown. His brother Tim is in the NAHL. And, it'...

Most coaches are a hoot. Some are pricks. And some refs are good, and some are pricks. As a coach many years ago, I felt it my duty to know the current rule book, and to pass on as much of that knowledge to my players. I held off-ice sessions, usually with pizza and stuff, to talk about the g...

There's number of questions about Tech hockey right now. If you've seen a game (I've seen couple home games), they appear to be disorganized. It appears they have some talent but are no where near playing at the level they should and haven't beaten anyone of consequence. I don't know much about the...

One of the reasons to carry 15 skaters and 2 goalies, or more, is to reduce ice costs per team. Also coaches prefer to run practices, and they're significantly better, if they have at least 15 skaters present. 3 units of 5. Teams with 13 skaters can have 8 show up and not have productive practices....

No, I'm saying that people want to be in the league, and are upset when they (or their little Jonny) don't make the team. Success, in this case, is that people want to be there, and it's being scouted heavily. If it wasn't working, folks wouldn't be on here complaining. As long as it's considered th...
