I'm not getting it. Could someone please spell it out for me? If little Johnny's birthday is June 30th and little Bobby's birthday is July 1st, and they both start school on time, what advantage/disadvantage will each receive? If we say they are both 9, they would both be 4th graders. Johnny would ...

welder: I just looked at our association's database for 2009-10, from Jr. Gold to Mites. (Boys and only girls playing with boys) It is about 50-50 for July and August birthdates starting school on time. I found close to 70% of June birthdates started on time. I did find a handful of March-May that ...

The full text is available here http://www.informaworld.com/smpp/content~db=all~content=a784758796 Alternatively, the Abstract includes a reference to the fact that the majority of those who redshirt are born in the autumn. You assumed this practice applied only/primarily to those born in the summe...

(BTW, you conveniently avoided mentioning that the article states that a good chunk of the increase in 6 year old entry into kindergarten is due to states changing their cutoff dates to earlier in the year. MN has not done that.) Using irrelevant information and omitting pertinent parts are classic...

The majority of those who redshirt have autumn birthdays - not summer. A summer cutoff makes no sense even if there were large numbers of kids delaying The incidence of delayed school entry: A twelve-year review. EARLY EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT Where do you come up with this stuff? The number of au...

After reading these posts, the one thing that seams most apparent to me is that parents of summer bday kids that start kindergarten at age 5, resent the fact that other parents have delayed their summer bday kids. It also seems that these same parents are the most vocal opponents of a change to Jun...

The numbers are not accurate. The only accurate numbers are those from the MN Department of Education which show that virtually all children enter kindergarten at age 5. Appendix D Delayed entry into kindergarten is a myth - it does not happen The practice of pulling unsubstantiated numbers out of ...

Thank you spin and valley for giving me actual numbers and facts that seem to support what my gut/common sense was telling me all along. The real numbers don't support any of this. So current system basically hurts no one and changing it would help very very very few, not enough to even make a stat...

I agree with BB82 here. Someone above said that 80% of August birthdates are being held back. 80% of August birthdates are not ready for kindegarten, really?????????? Common sense tells me that 80% of August birthdates likely are ready for kindegarten and that 20% seems a more logicial numebr for t...

JSR The debate centered around the regisitration deadline is not a real issue - the proposal has been put forth largely by one individual looking to create an advantage for his own kid who happens to have a June birthday. Sports governing bodies realze that changing the cutoff date perpetuates rela...

To make one thing clear, the cut off date for entering school is Sept 1st. Anyone turning 5 prior to Sept 1st that does not enter school is considered held back or entering late. Those that enter as a 5 year old are on schedule, NOT entering early. Lets make a couple things really clear. There is n...

Re: startin g early
Also consider those kids who start early. I have a nephew with an August Birthday who started school a year early. He is entering 9th grade as a First year Bantam and has eligiblity to play Bantams as a Tenth Grader due to Age. What do you do with these kids? They should play with the grade they ar...

Spinner, Lay out your personal situation, with details, so we can understand why you would oppose a change to June 1. We're missing something. It's a perfectly logical change. TonyL, You should let someone else do the talking because most of us have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Tel...

you nailed it... they are held back from starting school. It is not starting school at the normal time. If the vast majority of June-Aug. bithdate kids delay entry (especially boys), wouldn't they now be starting at the normal time. These days, it is the summer birthdates that don't delay (often ag...

It's not about when they start. It doesn't matter when they start. If it is just about when they start it doesn't matter if the date is Feburay 3rd or November 16th etc. etc. It also doesn't matter who's the oldest and who's the youngest. Somebody is going to be oldest and somebody is going to be y...

You promote a kid being able to delay K entry to avoid being disadvantaged. But claim that regular start kids should just suck it up and play up. That is very shortsighted. If you are against kids being disadvantaged you would not promote a widening of the window to 27 months. Can you not see the d...

You are not aware that Squirts, PeeWees, Bantams, etc are based on 2 year windows? The cutoff date defines the window. Please don't embarrass yourself further. Doing away with age windows and playing with your grade would allow 100% to play with their grade. However, MH wants the age window. The qu...

MH has 2 criteria they are trying to follow. 1) keep the age gaps inside a 2 year window. 2) have kids play with their grade. Didn't you mean YOU have 2 criteria YOU are trying to follow? If MN Hockey insisted on a 2 year window, the current cutoff date would not be July 1. I guess I have to say it...

All my kids are the youngest in the school district for their classes and all are at the top of their class, you'd thinkone would be an anomoly but 3 is a trend, hmmmmm..... It was USA Hockey thatfirst changed to July 1 MAHA had changed to Sept 1 and were 8 months younger. MAHA then changed to July 1 just to keep peace. >>> Right. Flawed logic from the outset. Changing to July 1 with no apparent reason. By moving to a January 1 the Planning Committee determined that a ...
