Hunter Shepard of Grand Rapids didn't look nearly as sharp against Eden Prairie, giving up 7 goals on 49 shots, as he did 19 hours earlier against Edina (60 saves on 64 shots), but I would still put him in my short list of top goalies this year. He is an acrobatic as well as a fundamentally sound go...

You're right. On the surface, the game was very even in so far as both teams' goalies stood on their heads making critical saves and the final shots were reasonably close. The difference I saw is that the Elk River's goalie, Mac Berglove, gave up fewer rebounds and, when he did, his teammates were t...

Elk River - 3; Edina - 1. Just as I said. I rest my case, although the outcome was a matter of the ELks outhustling the Hornets, playing a smart, opportunistic game, and second-year coach, Gordie Roberts, outcoaching his former North Stars teammate, Curt Giles, rather than Edina taking a lot of pena...

The game is at Elk River; Edina lacks discipline and will draw lots of penalties; and the Hornets are cocky and are prime to get beat. Prediction: Elk River - 3; Edina - 1.

Thanks "The Exiled One." You're probably right on both counts, but still a neat story. Congrats and Best of Luck to Hayden.

Regardless of the semantics (e.g., "recruited walk-on," "recruit with athletic scholarship," etc.), it is ironic that Hayden's former blue line partner, Matt Nelson, an "on the radar" Princeton recruit, has been told by the school to hone his skills for a year in the US...

Thanks mulefarm. I stand corrected. The OMGHA Board did remove their no-confidence motion at the last minute before their meeting. Regarding being 100% sure that Coach Stefano covered up the incident, as I stated, it is "my understanding," based on hearing that claim from multiple independ...

I agree that Gary Stefano is a great coach, so he'll land somewhere. (You don't last 22 years with a school, dealing with both players and parents, otherwise.) I guess, for the sake of the players not involved in the incident, in terms of stability to finish out the season and because he wasn't that...

How cute! After all this pre-seeding posturing on pairings, we have the champion of Section 1 (Lakeville North) playing the champ of Section 2(Edina), Section 3 (Eastview) playing Section 4 (Hill-Murray), Section 5 (Centennial) playing Section 6 (Wayzata), and Section 7 (Duluth East) playing Section...

The Red Knights were a team of destiny and, after a dramatic season, they reached their destiny this weekend (the stuff of books/movies). Even though they did not meet the Greyhounds, the Crimson or the Wildcats in the tournament, the Red Knights truly showed that they were the best team at the end ...

BSM at the X

After fighting through arguably the state's toughest section, BSM is returning to the state high school tournament for the first time since 2001 (Class A team then) and is the sentimental favorite, after enduring an emotionally tough season with the debilitating injury to JJ. After disposing of the ...

The way the Class AA bracket looks on the Minnesota Hockey Hub, it appears that all eight teams were seeded by the tournament hockey coaches. I love the concept, however, I think that BSM should have gotten the #3 seed and been paired against Moorhead in a rematch (first game won in late January by ...

It is agreed. Tonka returns the favor tonight, beating Edina in the Hornets' home rink 6-1 (or even 6-0 reprise of Schwan's Cup semi score). Tonka throttles Edina's one great line of Malmquist, Hurley and Jordahl, and matches them with the Coatta, Lettieri and Thie line and raises them two lines wit...

I stand humbled. I overestimated Delbarton and underestimated our private school boys (although SSM is really more of a magnet hockey school). Now watch, I'll end up 0 for 3 in my prognostication, as a "reloading" Breck team sweeps them in a game at High Noon tomorrow (Jan. 17). I guess th...

I agree that Minnetonka is prime to be beat tonight by AHA even though the game is at home at Pagel. The Skippers are playing a back-end of back-to-back, playing Blake last night in Hopkins. Also, regarding AHA, I agree with shotpassskate that the Stars are coming together nicely, although I think t...

Thank you for the clarification, HShockeywatcher. STA could have probably given Delbarton a better game than Breck back in Jan. 2008, when the New Jersey boys last came out. That season, STA finished 26-5 and won the Class A title. Their losses that season were to twice to Hill-Murray (4-2 and 4-3),...

Regarding the Max Everson hit on Christian Horn as he was looking for the pass off the boards from Jake Horton, from another angle, it looked like the right call (i.e., "Interference") by the refs, although it was a pretty hard hit (see around 20:20 mark of third period of MyFoxHockey webc...

Kudos to SSM for romping over Delbarton. However, the games against STA and Breck should be more comparable. According to Wikipedia, the Delbarton School draws from eight New Jersey counties and 60 towns and has an enrollment of 542 young men from grades 7 to 12 (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Del...

I’m not keen on the idea of a Catholic school league for many of the reasons already mentioned, but I like PuckU126 ‘s (Jan. 12, 9:56 am) idea of a mid-January tournament over the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day weekend. It wouldn’t mess up the current great (winter) holiday tournaments or come too late...

Delbarton School is premier New Jersey boys' prep school that has won many ice hockey state championships, including the belated unofficial 1989 state championship played in April 2010 (see http://www.nj.com/hssports/blog/boysicehockey/index.ssf/2010/04/nj_ice_hockey_delbarton_wins_frozen_flashback....

Catholic Holiday Tournament

Looking up at the rafters at the Edina-BSM game tonight got me thinking that, even though a state boys high school hockey championship among Catholic schools could never be resurrected (before 1974-1975, private schools were not allowed to play in the big state high school tournaments), it would be ...

What a game! I knew that BSM would come back and probably would have won too, if there were a couple more minutes left (or if they didn't have that second period lapse again). I guess, give the Hornets credit. The green ogres aren't "pretty in pink" (actually red and white) like the Red Kn...

I think that AHA will be ready to take Burnsville and Edina come section playoff time. The team is not as deep into their season compared to the others (i.e., 8 games (or one-third) vs. 10-12 games for most teams) and Coach Trebil is consistently rolling 4 lines, so the players, particularly the und...
