Two pretty evenly-matched teams, and if there's an edge it would have to be the fact that almost every time these teams meet in the post-season, Red Wing's Nemanich outcoaches the Lourdes guy pretty badly. I remember sitting with an NHL scout when RW beat Lourdes in the state semis in 2002 or 2003, ...

I can't believe this discussion has gone on for four pages an no one has mentioned George Nemanich down in Red Wing. He went to a town that had never been to a section final, won a state championship and went to four or five other tournaments, including two other championship games. He's won the Joh...

I was at the game and yes, Lapic played the entire 2nd period, and all but about 1:15 of the 3rd period, all at defense, instead of his normal forward position. It appeared to be in response to Lapic's staying on the ice too long during a 1st-period shift, but that's just speculation. In talking wit...

Red Wing 7, New Prague 3.....Something bizarre going on with the New Prague team. The Lapic kid (the junior) apparently took too long a shift in the first period, so the coach made him play D the entire 2nd and 3rd period...He NEVER came off the ice in the 2nd, and only took two breaks of about 45 s...

Dwayne Roloson also was an NCAA goalie (UMass-Lowell, I believe), though he played some juniors before going to school. The problem of adequate goalie coaching is an issue everywhere, but it seems particularly acute in youth and high school settings. Most high schools have no budgets for a goalie co...

Eyeinthesky - Here's a link to a story the Strib did about a year ago on Byfuglien:
http://www.startribune.com/1330/story/948533.html
He never played varsity for Roseau, and left school early to go play midgets. Pretty good story, and he really pulled himself up from a tough situation.

Agree with 007....Happened to see this game, and while the shot count was overly generous, this freshman goalie was impressive. My understanding is that the senior with the torn ACL will be back mid- to late-December, and then RW will have two solid goalies. RW looked nervous early, then played a st...

The people picking the all state teams don't just look at the stats and pick the guys, there's so much more to look at, you know that. In fact, that IS what happens. You have to understand that in order to vote for the AP All-State team, all you need to do is be a sports editor or sports director a...

We've been through this before...He put up great stats with a very good team, but if you break the stats down, there's nothing special there. You could have taken any one of 25 goalies from around the state, put them on STA and they would still have won 24 games and gone to state. I don't have time ...

We've had this discussion before, but the consensus of most scouts is that Crandall is an average goalie at best. He's been protected by playing on very good teams. I remember one scout at their section final saying that if STA and Red Wing had changed goalies, STA would have won 12-0, instead of it...

I'm not sure if you were watching, but they lost the semifinal game in the 2nd OT. Yes, you are right, they didn't make it. But saying they are unlikely to make it then saying you were right on when they lose in OT is a little far. Great game by both teams, but claiming that it couldn't go to any o...

My sense of it - and I'm willing to admit I might be wrong - is that he was saying there was no one they considered an NHL prospect in THIS YEAR'S Class A tourney. I didn't take it as a general putdown of Class A hockey, because clearly you've had guys like Wyatt Smith and John Pohl come out of the ...
