It's tough not being there; I like Fleisch and Hack but it's brutal not being able to see what's happening.

Duluth East 4
Grand Rapids 2

Grand Rapids sounded terrible over the radio. Big win for East.

East needed the win, from both a seeding standpoint and a confidence standpoint. Plus, it's nice to gain just a little payback for last February. Image

50 shots on goal for East? Yikes.

This was a HUGE statement win by East. They came out and controlled the team that's been looking like their biggest competition for the section title on the road. The top players stepped up when they needed to, and Cooper had an excellent game in goal. If he can keep this up down the stretch, #1 in the section is very achievable for the Greyhounds.

Key section games left:
GR @ CEC 1/15
East-Flake 1/22
Anoka-Elk River 1/24
Anoka-GR 1/26
CEC-East 2/6

That's why it's significant...it's only their second win away from the DECC this year. And I wouldn't consider Elk River a real threat for #1 in the section.

Seeding means very little. Ask Cloquet and Duluth East from the past two seasons.

It does from the standpoint of you want one of the top three spots. Other than that, once you get to the 7AA semis, it's anyone's game.

It may not have mattered the past two years, but given a choice between Cloquet, Rapids, and Anoka in a semifinal right now, I definitely want Anoka, the likely 4 seed.

Really? Interesting. I know Anoka is having some problems this season, but they returned far more scoring than the other teams in 7AA. They've been a mystery to me, and I keep waiting for them to put it together.

It sounded like whenever GR had a good scoring chance, they shot it wide.
Seemed like that happened quite a few times. Gotta put it on net.
Keep working hard.
Congrats East.
Go Rapids. :)

I guess my reasoning is this:

First off, obviously, the head-to-head matchups. East controlled Anoka, Pulled one out in Rapids, and lost to Cloquet. That alone is a pretty convincing case.

Anoka lost to Wayzata tonight; they're 7-4 against a schedule nowhere near the other top teams in 7AA. They did beat Blaine; I'll get a better feel for how impressive that was after East plays them in 2 weeks. But their next most impressive win is probably Elk River. They also got killed by Centennial. Right now I'm more inclined to believe their upset of East last year was flukey and they just don't scare me.

Rapids may be down, and Cloquet may be maddeningly inconsistent, but they're East's rivals, and also draw huge fan bases at sections. The upset potential just feels a lot higher there.

Very terrible performance worst ive seen, they should be skated tonight because they didnt skate during the game lots of standing around.

Another reason #1 may be imporant is that the fringe teams in the section (ER, Andover, and Forest Lake) have all pulled off either a win or a tie of one of the top three teams in the section. However remote the upset chance might be, getting Cambridge or St. Francis would make me a little more at ease in the first round. It's not a big thing, but something to keep in mind.

I'll give credit to East because they won, but that was a terrible hockey game. Horrendous refereeing both ways, poor, poor defense both ways, sloppy passing both ways - just a sloppy, chippy game marked with a few nice plays. If you only listened to it on the radio, the Duluth station made everything sound much more dramatic than it really was. The 1st period goal by East was a sloppy misplayed puck off a defenseman, not a great shot. Of the 11 or 12 shots, most came from way out and were not great saves by the goalie. Rather routine actually. Those Duluth radio guys sure make for great theater though.

Again, congratulations to East, they won, getting a leg up in the section. For GR, back to the drawing board, especially on the defensive side of the ice. Keep working, lots of season left.

I'd have to say you saw the same game I did. what were the radio guys sayin when Underwood was stopping all but one of those second period shots where there was essentially NO GR defense even back in the zone?

If Rapids is going to get anywhere near the section finals this year, they better figure out how to stop the other team from putting 52 shots on whoever is supposed to stand on their head in goal.

What?

The Rapids defense makes me sick.
boblewee stated it like no other. He is right, d-coverage was brutal. East had the better legs and overall team speed too.
There were bright spots, Underwood was a treat to watch and so was Tardy for East, they were worth the price of watching this one live.

With the exception of last year's semi final, East has had better team speed every time I've seen them play Rapids and that is since like '94. Why? I don't know, I mean are the Rapids kids drinking soda and eating at McDonald's or something? BTW, if you are an athelete shame on you for even thinking of doing either. If things were really as bad as you guys say it was I hope Bruce says no pucks tomorrow.
