not that much activity on this thread in a while it seems.. couple thoughts/predictions after seeing how everything is starting to unwind

Lourdes finally loses their first game vs. Eau Claire. They've had many close calls in past games, and personally I think it's about time they loss one

Lourdes vs. AL will be the match of this week with the Eagles coming the W

Red Wing will FINALLY get their first win of the season on Tuesday when they go to Chaska (who is also winless 0-7-1)

New Prague is starting to shape up after a dominating win over Faribault (5-1), could possibly stock up some wins the next couple games if their good disciplined play continues.

Faribault has lost it's last seven games, what's happening over there?

Mankato West's hardest challenge for the week will be to keep focus for next week when they go to Graham to play Lourdes.

Scarlet..... you see the section shaping up as you planned... any surprises and/or disappointments out of any of the teams top to bottom?

Any other info on the lesser known teams in the section?

I hear that Faribault is getting their players back from suspension so they will be able to go the rest of the season. Hopefully that will help them make a come back to a terrible start.

Also when does West go to Lourdes?

Faribault could still be dangerous at the end of the season if that holds true and everyone knows in high school it's how you finish the season not how you start. West will go to Graham next Tuesday the 11th.

Faribault is the biggest disappointment. I had them seeded somewhere in the top 3 preseason for the section and right now, I think they're at a 5-6 seed.

Biggest surprise is Mankato West's Ville Rantanen. His impact on the team gives the Scarlets a day in day out scoring threat, and he gives West more depth.

For Albert Lea, I think they can outcoach Lourdes, but do they have the depth to beat Lourdes? That'll be the question answered after Tuesday for me.

For some "lesser known teams" in the section, I think your Leseur's, Wascea's and La Crescent's are much improved compared to last season, but I think the gap in skill between these teams and teams like New Prague or Northfield are still considerably large.

How canRed Wing's start to their season be seen as anything but a disappointment. I Know they play a tough schedule, but still winless in January? I'm sure they'll get things going now that conference play goes into full swing

The new year has come and their have been some suprises in this section while some teams are right where expected. I still think with the exception of Rochestor Lourdes the next 5 or 6 teams can beat eachother on any given night while a few of them could sneak up on Lourdes.

1. Lourdes: still the obvious number one, they did lose their first game this weekend to Eau Claire WI (who lost to New Ulm).
2. Albert Lea: They are my number 2 at the moment, as they continue to play pretty well.
3. Mankato West: They could be at that number 2 spot but that loss to Marshal is an ugly blemish.
4. New Prague: Looks like they are starting to shape up with better discipline and that convincing 5-1 win over Faribault puts them ahead of Northfield for the moment. It will be interesting when those two teams finally get to meet.
5. Northfield: This team is hard to figure out, but they could sneak up on some teams down the road. There worst loss is the early season loss to Faribault. But they have done enough to be ahead of them right now. They have a good win over Holy Family, who killed New Prague.
6. Faribault: They are off to a very ugly start. I know they have had kids suspended but i think they have had them back for a few games. They were a preseason contender and but if they can turn it around they can be scary. And its how you finish the season.
7. Waseca: The only reason they are here instead of Red Wing is soley ob records. Waseca has won some games. But they will drop by playoff time.
8. Red Wing: Some tough breaks for this team early on. Nearly beating Lourdes but find themselves winless right now. That should change soon and they will work themselves into the #7 spot.

POND: .... I'd say pretty close on those rankings, with the major exception of Waseca....I've seen them play... I'd say they are around the 9th-10th spot...and Red Wing is for sure 7 or better...just my opinion.

Yeah well Red Wing is obviously a better team than Waseca and they will be seeded ahead of them. I was putting it as if the seedings came out today.. i would think someone would be ahead of Red Wing because they are still without a win. And no disrespect to RW they haven't had an easy scedchule thus far. But they should be getting a W soon, and i think that they will most likely finish as the 7 seed or possibly the 6 depending on how the rest of the season goes.

Tuesday Games: picks are in bold

Mankato West hosts Lesuer-Henderson-St. Peter
Mankato East goes to Rochester Mayo
Austin goes to Sleepy Eye
Faribault hosts Big 9 Owatonna
Red Wing travels to Chaska
New Prague will go to Shakopee
Northfield plays host to Chanhassen

My match up of the week:

Rochester Lourdes go to Albert Lea City Arena to play the Tigers

Personally think game could be of two extremes: a blowout in favor of Lourdes or a very close game, regardless I think Lourdes better chance to win because they have the depth and better goaltender.

Not very surprised, I've been suspect of AL's depth since of the start of the season, not much there aside from Carlson other than Hacker and Stolt. Their goaltending has stepped it up quite a bit from where it was in the beginning of the season though despite giving up 4 goals.

AL vs Lourdes

Post by bobforhockey »

Goaltender for Tigers not bad at all, got hung out to dry on two shorties. Hope Carlson grows some, he is a slippery son-of-a-gun!

January 6-7 Games (Thrusday/Friday)

bold are picks

Faribault goes to Austin
Mankato West plays Mankato East
Albert Lea vs. Virginia/MIB
New Prague goes to Red Wing
Northfield at Farmington

Most interesting match up will be New Prague going to Red Wing. Red Wing might have one of the most deceiving records with just the one win, but they play maybe the strongest schedule of anyone in the section. 4 losses are from 1 goal deficits. This game might be the make or break for where the Red Wings are this season and New Prague is in the midst of turning their season around after a slow start.

really hate to double post but some updates on scores over the week and some games coming up this week

Thursday-Saturday Game Scores ( January 6-8 )

Albert Lea played back to back games on Friday and Saturday vs. top northern teams, Hibbing/Chisholm (9-2) and Virginia/MIB (3-1) both which resulted in losses

Austin played Thursday and Saturday losing vs. Big9 Faribault (8-3) and JM (8-1)

Faribault with the exception of the Austin game also played Saturday in Chaska and tied (3-3) the 1 win Hawks.

Mankato East was routed by crosstown rival Mankato West 15-0

New Prague went to Red Wing and won (4-1) in a section 1a clash

Northfield was over powered by Farmington (6-1)

L-H/SP lost to Hutch at Hutchinson 4-1

Wascea beat Sleepy Eye 4-2 in Sleepy Eye

Lourdes lost to Duluth Marshall 5-1 on Saturday

Tuesday's Game (January 11th)

Albert Lea goes to Rochester Century
Austin goes to New Ulm
Faribault hosts JM
Mankato East hosts Winona
New Prague hosts Chanhassen
Northfield hosts AHA
Red Wing plays Shakopee
Wascea will go to Dodge County

My Match up of the Week

Mankato West Scarlets (9-3-1) vs. Rochester Lourdes Eagles (12-2-0)

Lourdes is being assumed as the runaway favorite by everyone in the state, except for the teams in section 1A. Lourdes has been slipping down the rankings ever since they lost their undefeated record, and the Scarlets has been itching to play the top team in the section. The highly explosive Scarlets (6.62 gpg, 1st in the state) will have to battle with the likes of Vesel and Heimer and they will surely give Lourdes all they can handle.

The most interesting inter-game match up will be between the #21's. West's Rantanen vs. Lourdes' Vesel.

How do you figure Lourdes is slippling? They outshot but lost to a top 10 team (Marshall) and handled a good Albert Lea squad. MEanwhile West has played such giants as LeSeuer Henderson and Mankato East. Wow---tough competition.

We'll see tomorrow I guess

They were #3 in the state so there isn't really anywhere to go but down. Lourdes is a good team, their schedule thus far has been pretty weak; unlike the top A teams they don't play any legit AA teams and really have only played a couple of teams worth a salt and lost both, so why wouldn't they go down?

They'll have a chance to get right back near the top later in the season if they keep winning with games against Totino, STA, and Breck.

I said Lourdes are slipping down the rankings? So that's a true fact because they have fallen down a few spots the last time I checked? I never said anything about West playing tough competition, but I understand their goals per game stat is inflated with competition like that

Mankato west is ranked 123rd out of 155 teams ranked for strength of schedule as of 1-1-11. Lourdes is ranked 82nd of 155 during the same time frame. That being said, it appears to be somewhat of a wash in terms of has either team played a tough schedule. Titles are won in late February and early March so lets see who does what when it matters most. Lourdes will have an edge with home ice right through the sections.

Any details? Shots? Etc?

Albert lea:3 Century:1..watched this Big 9 showdown, it looked to me like century didn"t really show up ready to play, they got caught out of position on carlson's shorty and just didn't't look all that good tonight. Albert lea lacks depth, but carlson is very very very good.

Scarlet...so it was 3-1 Lourdes and they pulled their goalie allowing West to score on an empty net? That's a new one on me.

I was looking for stats on this game but nothing is posted yet...anyone have any information on goals/shots?
