#23: Bloomington Kennedy

108.88 pts

--7 state tournaments

The Eagles had a very strong run from 1983-91, going to State five times and winning it all in 1987 when they were 25-1. From 1969-97 they appeared in fifteen section title games (6-9), including ten straight finals from 1983-92, and 24 section semifinals (15-9). But since 1997, Kennedy has not advanced past their section quarterfinals.

#22: Anoka

110.21 pts

--5 state tournaments

Anoka’s five state tournament appearances have been spread out from 1985-2003; only once have they been to state in back-to-back seasons (1997-98 ), finishing as consolation champs and then losing to Duluth East in the 1998 Class AA championship game. They avenged that loss to East in 2003 by beating them in the quarterfinals en route to their first and only state championship. Their best recent chance at getting to state was in 2008 when they were 21-7 and lost to Cloquet in the Section 7AA finals.

#21: Holy Angels

2011 was the first time the Stars were knocked out in their section quarterfinals since 1998. They were dominant from 2002-05, winning two Class AA titles, a third place, and a consolation championship, going 7-2 in championship bracket games and 10-2 overall. Their first appearance at state was in 1999 when they came in fourth place. Holy Angels’ success has been recent and strong, coming in at #3 in total points during the past decade.

#20: Thief River Falls

116.28 pts
--2 state titles (Class AA)
--9 state tournaments (Class AA); 2 state tournaments (Class A)

Few of Thief River Falls’ rating points come from their days in Class A, started in the 1993-94 season. While they have gone to state twice in that class and did capture third place in 2011, they have been 2-6 in section finals. The Prowlers high rating is owed to what they did primarily from 1945-65 when they went to state nine times and captured the championship in 1954 and 1956.

#19: White Bear Lake

--18 state tournaments

Should a team which has never won a quarterfinal game at the state tournament be ranked this high? Opinions vary, but the numbers used in this study say they deserve the ranking. They have at least twice as many state tournament berths as anybody ranked lower, and only five teams ranked higher than the Bears have been to state more often. What is equally important is that (once they have lost that first game) White Bear Lake has responded fairly well, going 16-18 in consolation bracket games, and winning the consolation title five times. They have also made it to their section finals 36 times.

#18: Blaine

--10 state tournaments

Blaine did not get so far as their section finals until 1992, the same year of their first state tournament appearance when they finished in third place. They have made nine more trips to State since then, including their 2000 state championship when they defeated Duluth East 6-0 in the finals. They have finished third on three occasions and are 12-14 in all games (6-9 in championship bracket games). They have been to state the past six years. Since 1984 they are 10-2 in section finals, 12-6 in semifinals. The Bengals rank #7 in overall points during the past decade.

#17: Rochester John Marshall

--10 state tournaments

In addition to their 1977 state championship win over Edina East, the Rockets have been runners-up three times (1946, 1979 & 1989). John Marshall was in the first four state tournaments from 1945-48 but their best decade was the 70’s when they were #4 in total points due to (in addition to their 1977 state title), finishing sixth and second in 1978 and 1979, respectively. They have dropped off recently, not appearing in a section final since 2005 and not having been to the state tournament since 1996.

#16: Greenway

139.12 pts
--2 state titles
--8 state tournaments

Another northern Minnesota school with a storied history, Greenway, led by Mike Antonovich, won state in 1967 and 1968. They made it back to the Big Show in 1987, losing to eventual state champion Bloomington Kennedy in the semifinals before capturing the third-place hardware. Note that their 1992 Tier II title is not included in this study due to….well, it being Tier II. Greenway had another third-place finish in 2001 but has slumped badly in recent years. A drop down to Class A in 2005 has not helped as the Raiders have not advanced past the Section 7A quarterfinals since then.

#15: Minneapolis Southwest

--15 state tournaments

Southwest had two notable runs. The first was from 1951-55 when they went to state four times. After not going to state the following nine years, their second run began in 1965 which found Southwest at the state tournament ten times in the next thirteen years, including a championship in 1970 over Edina. This run also included a second place, third place and consolation title. Southwest finished fourth in their final state tournament appearance in 1980, and was “absorbed” by the co-op Minneapolis West team following the 2005-06 season.

#14: Warroad

177.20 pts
--4 state titles (Class A)
--9 state tournaments (Single class); 12 state tournaments (Class A)

When it comes to Class A, Warroad rules the roost. Breck has as many state titles, but Warroad also has three runner-up finishes and has finished third on three occasions. The Warriors have four more appearances at the Class A state tourney than the next closest teams (Breck and Hermantown).

They also had some good seasons in the single-class tournament, but couldn’t quite capture a state title. The Warriors had three runners-up (1948, 1953 & 1969) to their credit. They also had three straight trips to state in 1987-89. Five years later they opted to play in Class A and started a string of twelve trips to state in the next 17 years. Only once in this time did they have a sub .500 record when they were 12-14 in 2000-01.

#13: Burnsville

--8 state tournaments

Burnsville’s decade was the 80’s, having the fourth highest point total of all teams in that decade. 1983-87 was their high point, going to state all five seasons, capturing two titles and adding two second-place finishes. After two more trips to State in 1990-91, Burnsville didn’t make it back until 2007 when they finished fourth. They have had good teams lately with seven straight winning seasons and look to be strong in the future.

--13 state tournaments; 1 state tournament (Class A)

From 1945-56, Eveleth was a dynasty the likes of which we have not seen since. They were in the first twelve state tournaments, winning five titles (including a record four straight from 1948-51), two second place and four third place finishes. Had they accomplished this in the 70’s or 80’s when there were far more schools participating, they would be in the top three or four. Nonetheless, that run was astounding; the Golden Bears were 23-7 in championship bracket games, 28-8 overall.

After another state trip in 1960, Eveleth didn’t appear back at State until 1998 when they beat Hermantown in the Class A championship game. After a huge upset by Duluth Central in the 7A quarterfinals the following season, the well ran dry. Only once since then has Eveleth made it as far as their section semifinals.

#11: Hibbing

--9 state tournaments; 4 state tournaments (Class A)

Hibbing has had no period of dominance; they’ve just been consistently good since the early 50’s. A state championship in 1952 was followed by another in 1973. They also finished third place four times and won the consolation title once in the one-class years. The Bluejackets were 11-7 in championship bracket games from 1952-86, 18-8 overall. In Class A, Hibbing has continued to fare well; while they haven’t won any championships in that class, they have finished second, third, fourth and fifth in their four trips. They opted up from 1994-2001 and got as far as the section finals twice, losing to Duluth East in 1997 and Elk River in 1999.

I thought the early domination and (5) championships would carry Eveleth into at least your top 10, maybe top 5...

I would have thought so, too. I didn't see where Hibbing should have been ranked ahead of Eveleth until I dug deeper into the numbers.

#10: Moorhead

207.39 pts

--12 state tournaments

So close, so many times; the Spuds have finished second at State seven times, more than any other school. Their success has also been fairly recent, considering they didn’t appear in their first section final until 1986 and their first state tournament until 1992. In their first four trips to state (in consecutive years from 1992-95), they finished no lower than third. Only three times has Moorhead not won their quarterfinal game and only once did they go two-and-out. In the past twenty seasons, Moorhead is also 12-8 in section finals and 20-4 in section semifinals. They come in #3 in the 90’s, #2 in the past decade.

Interesting that WBL (who has gotten to state 18 times with 0 Championships) is ranked 19th, and Moorhead (who has gotten to state 12 times with 0 Championships) is ranked #10.

I guess winning a couple of games at state is a whole lot more important than just getting there.

I thought it was every kids dream to play in the state tournament. Once you get there, then you start to think about winning it.

While this is true to an extent, there are definitely several programs out there where simply making the tournament in a given year would be a disappointment. Edina is the obvious example, but there are others to whom that applies, or to whom it applied throughout a particular time period. That can appear arrogant to outsiders, but it's also a sign of greatness.
