Big rivalry game in Cloquet tonight vs. the Greyhounds from Duluth East. Most on this forum don't give CEC a chance. But nonetheless, it's great Minnesota High School Hockey. If 60 minutes featured this high school hockey rivalry in the state of Hockey....I think lots of folks would think it's great/fun/kids/high school/a fun story. Let's get ready to rumble!!!!!!!!!

You're probably confused, Elliott, Bemidji is not playing in this game. You really should cheer for the Greyhounds.

Cloquet 4, East 3, Final. Takeaways:

1. The rivalry lives. Never doubt Cloquet in a game against East. They're 2-1-1 in the last 4 vs the Hounds now.

2. East's PK at the moment is god-awful. Of the 10 goals they've allowed this year, 7 have been on the power play.

3. East will tumble from the top 5, at the very least. I'm fine with that. Better to take these lumps now. Should be a fun bag skate tomorrow morning...

4. People fixate on the goaltending, but East's D is on the young side and isn't quite controlling games the way it should be yet. (No Spencer again tonight.) They had a couple of freshmen and a sophomore out there tonight, and while there's a boatload of talent there, they were in a very new situation. Growing pains will happen.

4. The Jacks are all over the place. They killed Marshall, got killed by Rapids, and now they pull one out against East. They're erratic, but that's part of what makes them dangerous, at least for one upset in sections.

Cloquet is the only 7AA team that is not intimidated by East.

This win by CEC only validates the close games East had vs AV and Andover. Those were head scratchers given how high they were ranked.

Preseason rankings are meaningless, prove it on the ice.

So East is a mediocre team and the only real head scratcher result was their 4-1 win against Wayzata?

I said East was mediocre? Defensive much after a tragic section loss?

East has always been there at the end, see Rapids and ER section games last year.

I am just asking you if you think East is mediocre. I'm sorry that I came off as defensive. I have been surprised with East's high rankings this season and was equally surprised with the result of the first game against Wayzata.

Maybe I will appear less defensive if I ask you a different question. Do you think East is ranked too high? If so, where do you think they belong?

I don't really know where they belong. I think EP and BSM are the top 2 by a slim margin over the next group of 8-10 teams. I was really surprised East only beat Apple Valley 2-0. Yes they beat Wayzata 4-1, but Wayzata played the night before and now the last 3 games for East one has to question why they were ranked #3. I guess I'd put them at about 9 right now. I'm still leary of East when it comes to sections. East has some tougher competition to rebound against the next 4 games. Elk River is still unknown to me based on who they've played. They get Blaine Saturday. Ofcourse I like Rapids chances especially when they get healthy. Right now Rapids is getting scoring from 3 lines and I think the most goals from a kid who goes under the radar with attn on the BAM line and Hain/McLaughlin, and that is Micah Miller. If anything tonight Cloquet made East's margin for error very narrow if they think they can still get the #1 seed. Cloquet has proven to be the type of team that after beating East will go lose to Andover or Forest Lake. I know someone will probably say something about talking seeds this early, but these games matter and you can put yourself in a good or bad position early.

No doubt that it's too early to start talking section seeds, but obviously these section games play a major factor in the outcome of the seedings. When their are 4 distinct top teams in the section, the A beat B theory generally holds weight. Now if East goes into Rapids and wins, then we will have some real interesting discussion! East will be fine when their young defensemen learn how to kill a pp. CEC will always "get up" for a game against DE, especially in their barn. Like Karl said, a early season loss like this will only help East's young kids. Lets be honest, they weren't going to run the table this year by any means, so a nice butt chewing from Randolph and an early morning skate should get their attention.

Does the trap work well on the penalty kill?

Last year East ran a 2-3 to turn their season around. I thought the trap was technically a 1-2-2.

Also don't forget East does play CEC again in February. Have to say this game will be the turning point in the hounds season, that it be for better or worse

You are overreacting. Remember last season, it was much further along when people said East was going to be a 5 seed playing at STMA.

I'm all good, at the end of the day it's one loss.yes it is a loss to a section opponent. And as well all know it all comes down to three games in Feb. it's gonna be a fun ride in the section.
