I believe there was a story last year about all this & I also believe it was mentioned that he was the first Pioneer to wear #13. Sad situation regarding his sister but spun into a wondeful story for their family in the end.Sparlimb wrote:I believe he's the first person to wear #13 in school history. Lesson #1
Hill-Murray Pioneers are the 2008 State Champions in spite of three losses and a tie.
Only one other team in Minnesota Hockey history has done the same with three regular season losses and a tie...
After doing it the first time, they didn't lose again for quite awhile...
I gave you the history... now, you do the math.

Lesson #2
Like all God's great works of art, there is beautiful symmetry in Pioneer Hockey.
Take, for instance, the three major eras in Pioneer history...
In the independent league days, the Pioneers were 23-14 in State Tournament games.
In the one-class merged league days, the Pioneers were 23-14 again in State Tournament games.
So far, in the two-class split league days, the Pioneers are 10-14 in State Tournament games.
Guess what is going to happen that will finally make everyone shut up about Eveleth and the days when hockey was more like figure skating with a puck?

Lesson #3
There were so many ways one could have predicted Hill's 2008 Championship, though none might have been easier than using the following simple formula...
Using results from all eras (Independent, One-Class, Two-Tourney) together,
Take the previous number of State Championship trophies...
Add the number of Runners-Up
Subtract the Third Place finishes
Add the Fourth Place honors
Subtract the number of Consolation Championship trophies
Add the Sixth Place honors
Subtract the remaining State Tournament appearances
Add the Section Final losses
Subtract the Section Semifinal losses
And add the Section Quarterfinal loss to determine the next year Hill would be expected to win the State Championship again.
As long as Hill wins in the years this formula now predicts, how long will the formula hold true?
I gave you the formula, now, you do the math.

Not bad, Ogee.
#1 A win streak spanning several seasons is in store for the boys in Green and Black.
#2 Hill-Murray winning 13 more State Tournament games in a row means at least four more State Championships. If done in consecutive years after the 2008 trophy, the Pioneers will eclipse Eveleth's record.
#3 Yes, as long as Hill wins as predicted, the formula will hold up until the end of time:

Extra credit:
Roseau likes to brag about making the State Tournament 32 times.
Though spread over 64 years and never having had to play in any tough Catholic Conferences...
Still we give the Rams their due.
Of course, Hill-Murray has a combined 35 appearances (22 post MSHSL merger and 13 Independent) over much less time.
Edina, feeling left out, insists on counting the historical records of all Edina schools...
taking credit for records of other schools who actually were their fierce competitors... for an inflated total of 30 State trips.
Using Hornet logic, the combined records of all past and present schools would give Bloomington 27 in total (That's okay with Edina as long as the Hornets get to keep their 30 claim).
How could we apply the same logic to Hill-Murray?
Let's see...
18 White Bear (and formerly Mariner), just miles away, sharing students, bus companies, and ice time with the Pioneers...
22 Johnson, of course, just down the road...
08 Harding is about the same distance away...
_2 Tartan is right down Century...
_4 turn the other way on Century and you run into North St. Paul...
_2 even Woodbury is close with maybe the highest percentage of Hill-Murray kids living there.
That's a total of 91 State Hockey Tournament appearances for the Hill-Murray Pioneers!
Hornet logic is fun!
Feel free to cut and paste this post into as many Edina Hornet threads as needed.

If I use Hornet logic, Hill-Murray has choked in 81 State Tournaments.pistol wrote:Extra credit:

Pistol, I went to school at H-M and math class was optional to attend when we ruled in hockey like we did. So could you just do it all for me and hand in my homework for me like you always use to do! Thanks again bud!
