Well according to Goldy 313 and Blizzard RW took it to Mayo and the Spartans are embarrassing this year. However, pointstreak has the shots as 25-21 in favor of Red Wing - sounds like pretty even to me.
Mayo crushed Winona 9-2, then Winona beats AL.
Owatonna beats Mayo 4-1, then loses to Century.
This conference sure is hard to figure out.
If you ask me, there are only about 3 teams with no chance of winning the conference this year - JM, East, and Austin. The other 7 have a shot if they pick up wins at the right time.
Interesting on the four point games...Mayo would have 8 points already after beating East and Winona - instead they have 4 and are 'undefeated' in conference play because the Owatonna loss does not count.

It was given for those games that two teams, within the conference, would only play each other once during the regular season.hawkhockey wrote:What was the deal with 4 point games? The Spartans aren't embarrassing just underacheiving. Given their talent there is no way they should lose, and lose by the margins they did to these mediocre teams. If you read any of Grosso's quotes in the paper or heard him at the Quarterbacks club you can tell he is dissapointed in the effort level. That's not a problem unique to Mayo by the way.
They take way too many dumb penalties and play as a bunch of individuals far too often. If and when the kids decide to consistantly play smart disciplined hockey they will be a very good team. I'm not holding my breath though.
BTW Century may have outshot Lakeville North but no one left the building thinking Century was the better team, this is a Lakeville North team that has only that one win.
I don't think the conference is that hard to figure out, there just aren't any real good teams. There are a bunch of really talented kids but they're just spread to thin. AL has 1 really good line, Mayo has 1 good/enigmatic line, Century has a couple of really good kids but their depth is at Junior Gold, that's the theme, no team has two full solid lines. That leads to no dominating teams.
To that; Faribault gets drubbed by New Ulm 8-2 tonight, the same Faribault that had the lead on Owatonna until the last 4 minutes of their game.

Owatonna at Dodge County
Owatonna 5
Dodge County 1
Dodge County 1
I got to enjoy a few games at the Kiwannis yesterday and so far today. I was watching the sports last night and our local guys were heavily covering basketball. They kept showing highlights of our Rochester teams and then would post the scores - Loss after loss. The Hockey coverage was fairly small but at least most of our Rochester teams won (yeah, yeah, I know red&black lost). Gotta love hockey.

some Big9 match ups for Jan. 6th
Mankato West vs. Owatonna - I've never seen Owatonna play but when I match up the teams it looks like it should be an okay contest.
Faribault vs. John Marshall - John Marshall is the standard 500 club, but Faribault from what I understand is pretty young but talented ? So from what I think this one should be pretty close.

Owatonna 2
owatonna has some goaltending issues and they think too much rather than just play. read somewhere on this forum that fish's teams really play smart. Well if throwing the puck up the middle in the defensive zone is smart then i don't know much about hockey. lead to 2 goals by west
Hard to play smart using things taught by a coach who can't win. Here is owatonna who's seniors went to the Bantam A state tournament and they make passes up the middle, and throw the puck around. If thats what Fish teaches his teams to do good luck being successful.davey wrote:West 5scarlethockey33 wrote:some Big9 match ups for Jan. 6th

Davey,
I thought Wobschall (i think that is owatonnas goalie) was good what did you see tonight?
Sioux Fan,
Nick Jose scored
Leiferman is a junior very good player but plays soccer so you'll have a tough time landing him

I have coached with Will and I know he doesn;t want em passing it up the slot in the D zone..
He is a good coach I think the Huskies have some good players and usually if they don't beat themselves and get decent goaltending they can beat anyone.
I am sure West was putting the pressure on the Huskies D and they just made weak plays hard to stop em from the bench.
Congrats to West on a good effort. Tell Andrew to keep up the good work.

From the looks of if both goaltenders (Reuvers/Wobschall) for Owatonna see a balanced amount of play time. If they're supposed to be good they haven't yet shown it at all this season. Then again the defense on Owatonna struggled tonight giving their own goalie a hard time.
And as for Trautman he played well. The goal towards the end of the 1st really got to him but good thing he had the intermission to shake it off.

I think there are a lot of up ad down teams this year. Mayo and Albert Lea each have 1 tremendous line but fall off after that, others like West, Owatonna and Century don't have the scoring of Mayo and AL but seem to have some more depth, though not enough to be dominant or even to win consistantly. Here's how I think they'll end up....
1)Mayo is playing better after a slow start, they don't play from behind well and are still prone to taking needless penalties. If they can fix that they'll be a tough beat.
2)Maybe the worst thing to happen to Albert Lea was to come back and beat Century after falling behind 3-0, they've been uncharacteristically up and down since. They and Mayo are talented enough to beat just about anyone yet also can leave you scratchig your head wondering what the heck happened to them in that game.
3)West is playing well, they haven't lost in almost a month and get a shot at Albert Lea next Tuesday. They also have a win in their only game against Owatonna, a big plus for West.
4)Century plays a gruling non conference schedule that should help them in the Big Nine, they're not overly talented or deep as is usually the case with Century teams so they struggle with the pace AL, Mayo and West like to play at. They do get 2 seniors back from rules violations next week which should help their depth dramitcally.
5)Owatonna handled a good Mayo team and has a narrow loss to a good Mahtomedi team. They also played to a 2-2 tie a Farmington team that gives up a ton of goals nearly every night. I can't buy into this team right now, they're even nore enigmatic than Mayo was to start the season.

Good analysis Goldy and I pretty much agree with your assessment. Might be able to flip West and AL although they are pretty evenly matched. Guess we will find out Tuesday although West has to take care of business tonight at Faribault. They are a little dinged up at this point with a couple of guys out with injuries and illness.goldy313 wrote:I think there are a lot of up ad down teams this year.
