Although, no disrespect to Body Shots - ok.. lots of disrepsect to Body Shots, ummmmmmmmmmmm.. eeeeeeeeeeee.... ahhhhhhh... the lyrics don't exactly describe OUR Body Shots.....
Ok Ok.... would someone please call 911 and send the paramedics to the Colesium about 6:10 Friday night??? The Colesium is big, and has a lot of hiding spots, but I have a feeling I may end up somewhere between the stands and the boards in the moat if Body gets ahold of me...
Eddie.... because I was not AT the game, I cannot explain the intensity or the visuals that the people in attendance saw, but I can give you a perspective from the internet broadcast.
Let me explain that, although I am not even close to being a fan of the WBL coaching staff, I DO care about the players. I get torn seeing the team win, because that keeps that putz Sager's enormous ego inflated, but I am happy for the kids.
However, here's my interpretation listening to the broadcast team, which the play-by-play guy is a WBL resident, he was perfectly unbiased in his calling of the game. I really do look at things and listen to things neutral, and try to formulate an opinion on what I read, see, hear. Let me add that the play-by-play guy knew I was listening, and he knows who I am, so there was no tainting on his part.
First off, the penalty for the 2 and 10. The best of my recollection is that a clean hit earlier on the game affected Wahlin's knee or ankle, and when the 2 and 10 was called, the broadcasters neither chastised the call as being a blatant attempt to injure nor did they harp it was the right call. They "understood" the call, because Wahlin went down hard, but, the fact that he was hurt earlier in the game MAY had some effect on that play - it wasn't the play itself. To call it a "gift" would be a bit unfair, AS per the broadcast per my interpretation... Got Some also listened, and he may have heard differently, because he has orange-colored glasses.
If memory serves me, Wahlin never missed a shift. And let me add this.... Thanks to the retaliation penalty, WBL missed out on a PP chance.... And, that type of play has affected this team for two years. Sager keeps allowing it to happen without repercussions. He keeps throwing the same guys out there and the same mistakes happen.
Next, the announcers admitted play was "questionable (chippy)" and that the refs were trying to keep things under control, but yet, not trying to give advantages to any team, so that the play decided the game, and not the refs... My visual from the audio was that unless something was blatant, the refs were looking to try and keep things coincidental.
I can't comment on all non-penalties or penalties, but what sticks in my mind from the broadcast are two things:
1) The disallowed goal by WBL, when a penalty on Stillwater was called. For one, the announcers thought the penalty was goalie interference, as the WBL player clearly took out Defiel with a trip, to why the goal was disallowed. They seemed a bit surprised that the penalty was on Stillwater. If the penalty was on Stillwater, then the play should have been a continuance, and the goal allowed. But, the interpretation was that there should have been a goalie interference included.
2) I recall a play in which Wilson Housley relaxed in front of the next after a whislte, and was blown over, and if I remember, there was a non-call.. I just remember he got blasted, and it raised the announcer's voice.
With that said, Phil Housley is not alone in screaming at refs.... Please pay attention to Sager next time... not just the opposing coach.. In between Sager's whistling for line changes, the only three words you hear are "BODY" and "Interference, Ref!"... get a monkey and a tin cup!!
In all, you spoke of what I have harped on all year. WBL plays horrible fundamental hockey. Period... End of story.
GFD -
First - I agree 2-10 or 5 min. major is a judgment call, I do however believe that, had it been in the middle of the season, it would have been a 5.
Second - the dis-allowed goal was because the net was off. which was a good call. And as far as goalie interference WB's guy was pushed into the goalie.
Third - There may as well not been any ref's on the ice, they didn't try to control anything, they let far to much go and most of it was from Stillwater, they played dirty rotten hockey, I am a big advocate of physical hockey but not cheap hockey.
Fourth - Housley getting blown over in front of the net, was at the whistle not after, but I will say that was the beat hit, maybe the only hit WBL had.
Fifth- Coach Housley is a Whiner no matter what. And I guess coach Sager yells BODY, BODY, BODY, because nobody takes the frickin body!!!!!!
I was at the game and there were many penalties both ways not called. The goalie interference you are referring to was a stillwater defensemen taking the White Bear player into the Stillwater goalie, hence the interference call. The right call should have been continuance and the goal allowed. The only blatant call that was missed to me was the check from behind that injured the White Bear player in the third period. The ref's let the kids decide the game and that is the way it should be in the playoffs. In my opinion there shouldn't be more than a couple of power plays for both teams in a playoff game. If the ref's make the calls at the right time the game will flow from there and take care of itself for the most part.
As to people bagging on the White Bear coach, I see a team that is well schooled in the fundamentals and plays their systems very well. White Bear people have a very inflated sense of their teams talent level. This team maybe has one kid who will go on and play division one hockey, maybe two if the other player I have watched learns to get tougher and play harder in the defensive zone. This is a team full of hard workers that grind and do the little things well, nothing more nothing less.
Stillwater played a great game and definitely outplayed White Bear for most of the game. The reason for this is Stillwater has better defensemen and they controlled the White Bear forwards for the most part. People take shots at both of these coaches but in my opinion they are two of the better coaches in the metro area for high school hockey.
Hill wins tonights game by three. Talent wise I see Hill being five goals better but maybe the rivalry keeps it closer.

1 - There was a worse call when the WBL player actually hit the boards (when Hauswirth was hit) that should have been called before this one was.
2 - watch the tape of the game you will clearly see the WBL kid avoid the goalie with his body but sticks his leg out to catch the goalie.
3 - Spoken like a true Homer.
4 - Again watch the tape it was way after the whistle.
5 - WBL takes the body the only problem is it's after the whistle or kneeing a guy from behind but I suppose that never happened either.
Thanks for clearing up a couple of the interpretations I heard via the broadcast.
I am fair, impartial, neutral and and fairly objective to look at BOTH sides. Stillwater may have been "cheap", but let's not overlook the documented plays of retaliation, and non-call of a "kick" by a WBL player.
Gjerde missed a couple games due to HIS style of play during the CDH game. I have seen Wahlin and Birki use their sticks, and throw punches behind the play often - after they were cleanly knocked off the puck.
Watch these guys closely when they get taken to the boards, and knocked off the puck... The opposing player will start to skate back into the play, and those guys are clutching, grabbing, and using the blade of the stick. Those two may have the quickest triggers amongst the whole team when they get hit - And I am Wahlin's biggest fan, next to his family. Trust me, it pisses me off to see OUR kids do the same things.
It's not just a one-sided love affair....WBL is as guilty as the next team. It's hockey.
Let me just add that this game is over and there's no need to dwell on missed calls, and no need for us to argue the past points.
But, if I go to the game tonight, I will bring my journalism pad, and I will take notes. Watch if WBL gets down by a couple goals tonite, how chippy and cheap it plays tonite.

Somehow, I believe, it will come back to being Stillwater's and/or Coach Housley's fault . Let it go WBL fans, your lads won the game... congratulations! Now get out there and give H-M all you've got tonight, minus the mental mistakes, and hopefully we'll have a new team representing Section 4AA at the X!
