It's a little thing called integrity.

Moreover, as a head coach, I would never allow a newly hired assistant to work with my players in the fall. It's a great way to put yourself out of favor with other coaches in a hurry.

There's a reason that certain people bounce from program to program year after year.

Very good points, and I agree.

I have to say that not ALL coaches bounce around due to their own self-induced issues - some are legitimately wronged...

And, on a different note, I must add that in theory - while unethical - if a coach switched HS teams every off-season they could coach whatever palyers they wanted every off-season. It would indeed put this coach & anyone employing them in a bad spot with other coaches.

This is one loophole that I'd like to see addressed by the MSHSL, but also another - I think that we need to find ways of being certain that Off-Season training, teams, etc. aren't becoming recruiting opportunities - or even have the perception as such. One thing that was suggested is that HS coaches ONLY be able to work with their own HS players during the summer contact period. I thought that was an interesting idea - and would keep them out of AAA/etc. however...

Re: coaching
As the programs keep going through this sad and horrible ammount of turnover it is good to know for coaches with experience! There always looks to be openings if you aren't afraid to move.

We do need some people with experience and longevity.

Mostly I think it is because parents are jerks, and AD's give ZERO support in helping their coaching staffs develop and helping them deal with things that are either out of their control or they try to let the parents run the team. There is no barrier or safety net as coach, and parents can say and do anything to damage a coach and the AD does nothing about it. I have seen it happen to too many good young coaches, and too many times!

Re: coaching
Amen.

I've preached on this before, so I'll spare everyone the long version again, but I really believe that communities would get more out of coaches (as if they don't already anyway..) if coaches had some reason to believe they wouldn't be dismissed on a whim without proper justification.

Also, if you're defamed, descriminated against, or wrongly terminated, fight it. It's the only way that anyone will ever think twice about doing it somewhere else, again, etc. You may not get your job back, what you want, etc. but at least you have stood up for yourself and your fellow coaches.

Re: coaching
Fight it! You said it. I wish that coaches could stand up for themselves more against AD's and parents. Remember that they were SELECTED as the best applicant for that job. The best of what was available is the key. Everyone foregts that once a team losses or a player doesn't get enough ice time. Almost 90% of problems come from this, oh and girls and parents anger towards others.

Re: Newer Openings... from MSHSL...
With girls hockey growing so much the past few years it is sad to see such turnover. Girls hockey needs the coaches to stay around. If there is a few hundred coaches for HS girls in the state it seems like we lose 50-100 every year. Oh well...

Re: Newer Openings... from MSHSL...
Kind of a reverse-form of job security if you think about it - if you're a decent coach, and get the shaft, you can pick up a job almost for certain, unless you're really shafted defamation wise, fired while rebuliding a program, discriminated against, etc. - or worst case - all of the above... and even then sometimes a coach can come out of it OK I hear - with the right support.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ckeyfan at: 10/5/05 11:12 pm

Re: Newer Openings... from MSHSL...
How 'bout if you are a male working hard to rebuild a girls program, get let go because they want a woman in the job, and then that woman leaves after a year...That would really suck.

But you handled the situation with class, from what I've seen, and Simley was the beneficiary. Good luck this year.

Re: I believe it's now complete...
I just wanted to say that I've had a chance to meet a number of the new coaches, and also knew a number of them that left this past year. We've gained some very good people, even though we obviously lost some great ones as well.

Unfortunate that we have so much turnover each year, but a blessing that we are getting good new people involved too...
