Packerboy mentioned this earlier, and I agree with it 100%. Take the best player available with the # 7 pick. Whether it's a CB, RB, WR, TE, OT, whatever, I would not want to reach for a player based on need but rather take somebody who can help us out of the gates and be an impact guy, regardless of how deep we are that position.
Here are some viable options at # 7:
Gaines Adams, DE, Clemson-A speed rusher who could be an asset considering the Vikes appear pretty content at rushing the passer will the front 4.
Leon Hall, CB, Michigan-A great cover corner who can also play safety. Physical and can play the run, he would aid the Vikes secondary greatly.
Adrian Peterson, RB, Oklahoma-Likely won't be there at #7, but should he somehow slip due to durability concerns, he is an offensive playmaker that the Vikes could not ignore.
Ted Ginn, WR, Ohio St.-Gamebreaking speed, but a bit raw as a WR.
Dwayne Jarrett, WR, USC-A bigger receiver with great hands, fills an obvious need.

I'm still hot on the Matt Schaub bandwagon. I think he can be a very good QB in the NFL. I'm not completely sold on Jackson, and even if he does become a solid starter I don't see it happening until a few years down the road. Schaub is familiar with the offense and has a big-time arm and poise. I would love to see him in purple.

Every mock draft I've seen has us taking a WR. Either Ginn or Jarrett and in a couple Johnson slipped to us.
I agree, best player available. I just can't wait to see who Childress's best player is. I'd almost like to see us trade down to someone like NE who has 2 late 1st rounders. I think we need some quantity of players.

Childress said that Jackson or Bollinger will be the starter next season and if a QB is added to the roster it will be a young development type guy.
Excuse me isn't that what Jackson is? I have already said I liked Schaub but what do people think about trading for Leftowich or Garrard from Jacksonville?

Gimme that big slab of meat who takes snaps for LSU. Man can he sling that ball downfield with ease. I don't see him getting happy feet in the pocket either, who could hurt him.
Everyone in front of the Vikes will not draft offense, therefore with the 7th pick, one of these guys will be available.
USC#8
LSU QB, He's a Jr. but he's coming out
Ginn, heck play him on both sides of the ball, 2 picks for price of one
Adrian Peterson, reminds me a lot of Robert Smith
Quinn, Weis the guru says he will be the 3rd best QB within 3 years
Calvin Johnson

Their egos will force them to go with Jackson.
Remember, they drafted this guy 2 rounds before anyone else would have. They couldnt wait to tell us how smart they were for doing it.
They arent going to trade for a QB.
I dont know if they would be smart enough to draft one or not. The kid form LSU looks ready now. Hed be crazy to stay in college. Would he fall to 7th?
Id trade our 7th pick and Jackson to get him.

It's very likely that Brady Quinn and Jamarcus Russell (LSU QB), could go 1-2 to Oakland and Detroit, both teams desperate for a QB. Oakland could also grab an elite tackle.
Cleveland will likely go with either Adrian Peterson or Calvin Johnson. Both players are too talented to let them slip past a team that still needs weapons.
Tampa Bay has tons of needs, they could go anywhere.
Arizona goes offensive line or defense.
If Calvin Johnson fell to Washington, they would likely take him. Also possible they could take Ginn. Otherwise, they go defense.
That still leaves the Vikes with one of 3 "stud" receivers in the draft (Jarrett, Johnson, Ginn). They would all make sense, although apparently Childress would rather not take a WR early. With the talent on the board this year, # 7 would likely leave them with offensive or defensive lineman.

Dewayne Jarrett is awesome. He could easily go top 10.Irishmans Shanty wrote:I want that #8 from USC. I know, wide recievers are sensitive and hard to please, but all indications are that he will be an impact player on Sundays. The Vikes need to fill so many holes, you name the position and you could justify the pick.
We really need an impact kick returner!

Shades of the 2005 draft anyone? The 3 WRs available
Calvin Johnson- Heads above the others, complete package. (Braylon Edwards)
Dwayne Jarrett- Big possession receiver from USC, little slow. (Mike Williams)
Teddy Ginn- Fast receiver, major questions about hands. (Troy Williamson)
I realize they don't totally fit into the mold, but just interesting how when we need a WR we have the same 3 types of receiver to choose from and we have the #7 pick again...

It's an interesting comparison, but there are notable differences in the receivers:
Calvin Johnson is one of the top WR prospects in years, comparable to how heads and shoulders above the rest of the field Larry Fitzgerald was. He is considered a "cant-miss" prospect. Better speed, size, and hands than Edwards, who has turned into a solid pro with a bright future.
Jarrett is faster than Williams, and has less questions surrounding his work ethic, although the comparison can definitely be made in this case.
Ginn has proven it on the college level. Williamson was scarcely used in South Carolina's run-heavy offense and was considered incredibly raw. Return skills help his stock.
The scenario is similar, but I think we are dealing with better prospects this time around.

With the exception of our owner (who must be the first person in decades to state his goal is to bring MN a Super Bowl title), this is not a team that garners much praise. During a recent interview, Childress said, 'We need better talent' but felt his [closed] coaching approach was fine. I wouldn't get excited about '07.
