Did I read this right???
Proctor/Hermantown/Duluth Marshall 19, Superior, WI 0
This has to be the worst display of sportsmanship in High School Girls Hockey of the season. Once the score was about 5 to 0 in the FIRST period, PHD should have stopped shooting on the net and practicing their passing game..... No shots on goal allowed. There is no reason there should ever be a score like this. The only possible explanation is that you are trying to run up the point count for your players. Scheduling the game in the first place was a mistake. Once a coach realizes their mistake, there are things they can be done during the game.

A few years back I saw a 22-0 I think but otherwise this is the highest scoring game I've seen.Thunderbird77 wrote:Did I read this right???

Bet we see this schedule come back to haunt them later in the season when they play teams that aren't 10U caliber....but you gotta keep your "transfer" happy

Conehead and some of you others need to get a life. Again a case of posting opinions without knowing the facts.
1. PHM had only 38 shots. They passed up many shots. Superiors goalie quit this week so the girl who played never had been in the nets before. She did not stop anything.
2. This was a conference game. PHM does not control who is in the conference. They have to play them. Remember, Duluth beat them last week 2-0 with their other goalie in there.
3. PHM's top line and top set of D played only a couple of shifts in the second and none in the 3rd as they undressed after 2. Check out the boxscore on Warroads 14-0 win over I falls a few days ago and see if their coaches did this. You will see they did not and that they were still scoring in periods 2 & 3.
4. Their 4th line never plays. When they get a chance are they not supposed to try?
5. The 3rd and 4th lines and bottom level D did much of the scoring.
5. The game was scheduled long before the transfer arrived. Do I smell sour grapes there conehead?
6. This was very unfortunate. Calling it the "worst case of sportsmanship ever" is a statement of a truely uninformed observer. If they have any kind of goalie it is an 8 or 9 to nothing game. There are several of those every week in girls hockey.
Again, get the facts please.

Lakeville South 3
Rochester Mayo 1
Lakeville South played well last night in Rochester. I thought they held the play for a majority of the game, and showed some very good speed. They are a young group with a bright future.
First two goals for South: first came from behind the net and off back of the goalies leg along the post, and a Mayo tip-in on their own goalie for the second... tough way to start the first 5 minutes...
Mayo did not have their best game last night. I have watched this team all year, and last night the legs were not moving as they have in earlier games this season. I hope that this game shows them that both effort and skill have to be put forth every night. They have it in them, and have shown it, but it must become more consistent.
Last night was Lakeville South's night...
This would be a good 1AA section matchup down the road...

Easy now folks! It isn't easy to keep a good team from playing hockey, and shooting is part of that. I would venture to guess coach told them 3 or 5 passes before shooting, or something to that nature? Not sure but the mentality of "don't shoot at all" may just have cost Breck last year in the class A State tourney final last year?Thunderbird77 wrote:Did I read this right???

It is a no win situation for both teams when there is such a mismatch,hockeyrube7 wrote:Easy now folks! It isn't easy to keep a good team from playing hockey, and shooting is part of that. but sometimes it would be nice if the coaches used a little creativity like maybe only skating 4 players to make it a little bit less lopsided. or shoot for the outside of the post and see if you can hit it.
I do not condem the coach if they actually took out the top skaters it is hard to slow down and not score especially if your lines never get out there they want to show what they have, and I am also sure the winning goalie depending on how many shots they got wanted to preserve the shutout. My kids team has been on both sides of this fence of being shelled and doing the shelling but they never ran up the score over 10, they would have been told to hit wide or pick a spot on the board behind the net and hit that.

It's not easy for either coach when these games must be played due to conf. obligations. Couple that with the goaltending circumstances and you have the recipe for disaster.
I've been on both sides of this and have a time or two not controlled the score as well as I should have. I've also been on the receiving end of this and not done well with that either. (at times asked opposing coach to not stop his team from playing all out, others asked for some consideration of circumstances)
What is most important is that the coaches of the teams involved talk BEFORE the event in question especially when you have a situaiton like the goalie mentioned.
I asked for mercy once though in a similar goaltending situation and watched a team pour it on with 1st line players skating and scoring 14, 15th goals in the last couple minutes of the 3rd period...
I've been up 9-0 at the end of 2 (and this was against a G that saved 60+ in a SO the game before) and did everything in my power to score control but watched the opponent put in an inexperienced G to finish the game in the 3rd and my 4th line score 4 goals (all 1st goals ever for the players involved).
At some point do you stop shooting? Do you pull a player off the ice and potentially insult the opposing players? (this can) Developing a multi-pass rule, shooting for wide of net, setting up PP scenarios in O-zone, etc. can help. Switching players to different positions. Etc., etc. all help but different coaches of teams on both sides of this have very different felings often I've found. Communication is key and this is NEVER easy...
My favorite personal score control "story" came in my first year in a program when the parents thought I knew nothing of coaching as I appeared rather "young" to them I guess... Actually the TEAM was young (predominantly 7th & 8th graders) and at times had great defensive & goaltending lapses (inexperience) which cost us games when we had comfortable leads early on. For this reason I always wanted a 5+ goal margin if possible as it also enabled me to play deeper into a very young bench and that was important for full-team development purposes as well... Thankfully we did have some offense but "1st to 10 wins" hockey really isn't what I think is the right way to play... So, after beating a team by 5+ goals and then 7+ the next night some parents wanted to have a meeting with me about "controlling the score" and being "sportsmanlike" as "(their) team had been on the receiving end many times before," etc. Obviously since I was so "young" and "didn't know what it was like to be on the other side of that" (note the sarcasm) they needed to "give me some guidance." I listened politely and replied that we didn't have the team to score control at a 3 goal or less differential. Sure enough the next game we lost 10-8 after blowing huge early leads. Needless to say the "score control" issue never came up again and they let me coach without "advice" (at least that said directly to me) from that point on... =)

Sportsmanship
Someone should ask Superior how they feel about it. I was at the game (no I am not a Mirage parent) I am just a hockey fan.. When my kids were on the wrong end of a game like that, it made them feel worse when the other team went into the take it easy, don't shoot mode. If they got beat bad they wanted to know that they were taking the other teams best shot. 10, 15, 19 goals is tough any way you look at it. Parents tend to have a harder time with it than the girls playing. Let the kids play and the coaches make each situation a learning experience.
