MAHA North Region @ Virginia

Good games going on over in Virginia. Classic battle between Brainerd and Bemidji earlier was probably the game of the day. Bemidji dug deep and pulled it out in the end with two late goals. Hope the Bemidji player who was injured is okay. Any word? He was run with about 20 sec left in the game and taken off on a stretcher. The GR thoughts and prayers are with him and his family as it was a pretty vicious hit.
As for the other games, GR kind of slept walked through a 3-0 win over Hibbing, possibly looking ahead to tomorrow. Moorhead was up 3-0 over Virginia, and Roseau was getting set to take on EGF. Looks like it's shaping up to be GR vs Roseau for the #1 state seed, and Moorhead vs Bemidji for #2. Should be a great couple of games tomorrow. Hope Virginia, EGF, Hibbing and Brainerd locked up some good tee times.

Wasn't from behind - he just went into the boards funny. Guy came from a ways across the ice to hit him. Seemed uncalled for.
Not sure who the injured player was, but will post if we here anything.

Any courses open yet? Good game, fast paced, hard hitting, poor reffing again both ways. I'm all for letting kids play, but some stuff happened that could have gotten players seriously injured. GR outchanced Roseau, but the mini-Rams put one more shot past the Rapids tender. Good luck to them at state.

You must have seen Bemidji in the stretch from right before Christmas through January. They had 3 or 4 people out during this time for every game. And a lot of this time it was their two leading scorers and #1 D man.
The last 4 weeks they have had most everyone at 100% and have beaten Moorhead and Roseau and Brainerd in that stretch. Lost to GR by 1.
They have a solid team.

If your close to the team you probably know the story already but the player was back at the hotel that night with some kind of neck brace/restraint on. He will be getting further evals Monday I believe...northfan wrote:Was it from behind and did you catch the # of the injured player?GR3343 wrote:Good games going on over in Virginia. Good to hear the player is up and around. Knowing the format of the tourney beforehand still doesn't make it seem right. Not sour grapes, but the two teams that went 3-0 on Fri/Sat are now home for the season while the teams they beat are headed to state. Somehow it seems like an injustice was done, and I'm sure we'll here from all the experts that say their teams won the game that mattered. Based on this format you did, but the teams that beat you deserved a better fate. Perhaps in the future the pool winners should play each other for the 1 and 2 seeds making pool play a little more meaningful.
This format is the same format that has been used for 15 years or more in northern MN.
Three games to get you to Sunday, and then you have to win.
Fair, I don't know about fair, but obviously Bemidji played better than Moorhead and this was their first shot at them over the weekend.
The reason is that you may have the two best (at least this weekend) in the same bracket. How do you know?
It is simply win enough to get you to Sunday then win...
Was it fair that Grand Rapids beat CEC in high school in a one game elimination???
It is play-offs.
Or in peewee A north region...
3 teams at 2 wins one loss...
one of those teams did not get the chance to play to go state on the last day....
Fair???
And team #2 beat #1 in head to head but has to face the cross-over #1 based on the rules.
Fair to me is follow the pre-established rules...

ttt
but I wonder if you would quote all this as easily if the shoe were on the other foot.
Good luck to all the teams headed to state!

First off, we hope the Bemidji player is ok! Secondly, congrats and good luck to Bemidji and Roseau for advancing to state.
Last night at ol' timers I was listening to the Brainerd parents talking about the hit on the Bemidji player, they thought it was clean but because it was a "heavy" hit many thought it was cheap. The ref didn't even give a penalty for it not that it makes it right. I'm sure many of you on this board that played Brainerd can support the fact that the bantam team was clean and discipline.
Lastly, the bantam coach last night at ol' timers stated that the refs overall were good and NOT the reason Brainerd lost two games. He actually felt he did not have the team ready for what they were in for. What else can he say, he has a good team that underachieved.

First, it is part of my job to uphold the rules.
Second, I have been through it. With my own kids, teams I have coached, and just teams I cheer for.
Coaches all know it and plan for it. Win and win big but play good D. That is how the formula works for tie-breakers.
Every coach knosws what they have to do on Saturday to get to Sunday.
Every coach knows what they have to do on Sunday.
And the kids know what they have to do on Sunday.
It is the best method for assuring two of the best get to state. Single elimination might put the best two teams in the quarters or semis.
And the two teams that went to state this year (as in every year) have the best records for the weekend (tied with two others perhaps).
Am I happy it came out this way, yes.
But no more so if the other teams went to state. They are all MN Hockey teams and that is what I support - by cheering, with my time, and with my money.
And this means I am happy about it.
