When will D1 do that, at the end of the season?MaxPower wrote:Unless something has changed drastically, District 1 will only take 2 teams to the Regional Tournament.
They "give" their #3 seed to another district that has only 2 seeds.
This tends to happen only at the 'A' levels in D1. They do this when there are less than 8 teams playing at a given level with-in the District.
I am guessing this year, that #3 spot will go to the 3rd seed from District 8 - the other option could be giving it to the #3 seed from District 10.
A different way to look at Peewee A teams

I will move Rochester to D8. Thank you, can you recommend who would be number 2 in D4?Soulforged wrote:The Rochester teams are playing in the D4/D8 East and will be returning to D8 for districts, regions, etc. By the way Faribault beat Rochester Red 4-3 this year in Rochester. Faribault is 10-1 with their only loss being to the Duluth Lakers 6-5 (Faribault was up 5-1 with 10 minutes left in the third in the semi's of the Cloquet Tourney, but a 10 minute misconduct and other penalities doomed Faribault to play 3 on 5 the rest of the game, and they subsequently lost).frederick61 wrote:PanthersIn2011 wrote:Rochester is D8 ... not D4.
If you look on the D4 website, both Rochester teams are listed in the D4 Peewee A standings. If you look on the D8 standings, they have all the D4 and D8 teams listed, but the Rochester teams have a small "e" in front of them for which I assume means East and teams like Woodbury have an "n" for North. Further the Rochester teams do not play any league games against any North teams. My conclusion is that they are playing D4 in regular season.

West Region
D5-#1-Mound Westonka
D5-#2-Buffalo
D15-#1-Moorhead
D15-#2-Fergus Falls
D15-#3-Brainerd
D16-#1-Warroad
D16-#2-Roseau
D16-#3-TRF
D16 Will be Roseau, East Grand Forks, Thief River Falls or Crookston.
Warroad has a long way to go to make itout of D16 play-off.
East Grand Forks might jump ahead of Roseau for #1, but I do not think so.
My guess as of right now,
Roso, EGF & Crookston.
TRF, then darkhorse Warroad , and a dark darkhorse Bemidji.
Followed by LOW & Hallock.

I took the comments and made the changes. My plan is to post this again next Monday based on what I think has happened this week. Note I now have added a third seed for D10 and D8 on the assumption that one of those seeds will end up as a third seed for D1 in the South Region. I eliminated Rochester Red from D4 and put them in D8 playoffs; but feel at this time that Lakeville North is playing better and is likely to be the #3 D8 seed. I replaced Rochester Red in D4 with Mankato or New Prague. I have seen Mankato play, but not New Prague.

Hockeyfromrochester brought the fact that his team is ahead of Rochester 1 in the standings, shouldn't they be rated at this time over Rochester 1 as candidate for regionals? It is a good question. I think there is a perception on my part that Rochester 1 and Rochester 2 were not picked evenly because Rochester 2 has some sort of A/B designation. Am I wrong in looking at these two teams that way?
Watchdog how can you say that the Moorhead win was a joke? Yes Roseau did win the first period. But as far as I could tell Moorhead won the next two periods. They out skated Roseau I think we can all agree that Moorhead is not the team that Moorhead has had in the past but this is a very hard working group. Let's give credit were credit is due. Roseau has some very talented kids on this team and I do believe that they are going to be very good in the years to come. Right now they are a very young team. I thought both teams played very well and it is games like this it is to bad somebody has to lose. I am looking forward to there next match up.

D16
Put the crack pipe away Fred. How little do you know about the other districts if this is your prediction for 16.frederick61 wrote: D16-Warroad, Roseau (still a question mark) and TRF

D1 is giving away a spot to regions??
How does that work??
I doubt that that is happening, as it is not allowed (not without board authorization, and I know that has not happended).

Maxpower came up with that fact. I don't know the details, I am only trying to figure which teams are in which district playoffs and how many teams from each district will be seeded to what regions.elliott70 wrote:frederick61 wrote:One more thought occurred to me about the potential District seeds to regionals. Elliot - D1 has (for at least the past few seasons) given up a 1 of their 3 spots into the regional tournament, when the district has only been allocated 2 spots, then they keep those spots. The D1 Director told me last season that "If there are less than 8 teams representing a given level (for example PWA with 6 teams) then D1 will not take more than 2 teams on to the regional tournament."elliott70 wrote:D1 is giving away a spot to regions??frederick61 wrote:One more thought occurred to me about the potential District seeds to regionals. Now, it is sure possible that things have changed this season. But this is how it has been the past few years at a minimum.
If I was to make a GUESS, District 3 will not or would not take this same approach.

Response to WatchDog'sRight about D16 ratings.
All of the D16 teams are somewhat of a mystery. I assume part of the reason is the travel times to play competition. But I also think that the Roseau-Warroad rivalry over the years has been so intense that those associations see no need to travel when they have each other to play.
There is an interesting article in the Fargo Forum this week about the Roseau/Warroad rivalry and about how difficult it has been for Moorhead to establish some sort of competition with either team. When you take that idea (satisfied playing each other) and add to that the facts that Warroad plays in Roseau’s Tourney; Roseau plays in Warroad’s tourney; both play in the Bemidji tourney (where only two cities teams will play) and that’s the bulk of their tourneys for the year, one can conclude they are comfortable with the current approach. Outside of league games Warroad make trips to Grand Forks, Fargo and Fort Francis. Roseau made its only significant south appearance by going to Moorhead tourney. They will play Moorhead at home in early February. They played and lost to Grand Rapids 5-1 earlier this month.
My point is both Warroad and Roseau are playing essentially each other and it is hard to judge how they will finish. Currently there are eight peewee A teams playing in D16. Besides Warroad and Roseau; TRF, Crookston, East Grand Forks, Hallock, LOW and Bemidji are playing this year. Latest D16 standings show Warroad, Crookston and TRF ahead of Roseau, but Roseau has played fewer games. The weekend before I posted the ratings, Roseau played in the Moorhead tourney, opened with a 5-1 loss to Maple Grove. I thought that if Roseau was going to be a top team, they would have pushed Maple Grove. They came back to beat a good Anoka team 4-1. But the Anoka has had trouble playing well in tourneys. They then lose to Moorhead in OT 4-3 and beat East Grand Forks 4-0 for a third place finish in the Red Wing tourney.
TRF beat East Grand Forks 3-0 about a week before the Moorhead Tourney. TRF opened the season in mid-Nov with three loses to Roseau, Warroad and Duluth East most likely right after forming their team. They have now won five straight and beat Warroad 6-1 two days before Roseau beat them.
Monday, I posted the ratings Warroad, Roseau and TRF. Tuesday night Roseau beat Warroad 9-2, one day after I posted the ratings. Roseau also plays East Grand Forks again on Sunday (Warroad plays them the day before). Next Monday I will post the ratings again, but to me the next check point for Roseau and Warroad is the Bemidji tourney on the 29th and 30th.
Roseau will play Cloquet (and St. Cloud) in pool play. Cloquet looked good in the Eden Prairie tourney with little or no practice having just formed their team about 10 days before Thanksgiving. St. Cloud is playing tough in D10. Warroad’s draw is Virginia, Grand Forks (which team?) and Keewenaw (Canadian team?). The relative strength of Warroad and Roseau will be tested there.
However there is another interesting test for D16 this week end in the Grand Rapids tourney. A tough eight teams are playing including D16 teams TRF and Bemidji (last years D16/North Region winner). TRF draws Hopkins in the opener. The winner then plays the winner of Grand Rapids/Forest Lake. Grand Rapids won the Moorhead Tourney last week and Forest Lake is currently on top of the D2 standings. In the other bracket, Bemidji plays Coon Rapids who is coming off a 2-1 win over Wayzata. The winner there plays the winner of Sartell and Cloquet. This looks like a great tourney and the D16 teams entered will be tested.
But Roseau and Warroad will not be tested. They are not entered. They play each other.

They play each other.
fred- the subject is or was district play. so whats the need for anything outside of that? i realize that you were making the call befor alot of games were played but it wouldnt take much digging to see the d16 situation. its basically egf trf and roseau with a dark horse in crookston its not even close after that. im not shook up about it were all just talking on here no biggy.
Thanks Max.MaxPower wrote:Elliot - D1 has (for at least the past few seasons) given up a 1 of their 3 spots into the regional tournament, when the district has only been allocated 2 spots, then they keep those spots. Since D1 is seeding one of their picks to either D8 or D10 because they will have less then eight teams, will D3 do the same (they have only 6 teams)?
How does that work??
I doubt that that is happening, as it is not allowed (not without board authorization, and I know that has not happended).
Now, it is sure possible that things have changed this season. But this is how it has been the past few years at a minimum.
If I was to make a GUESS, District 3 will not or would not take this same approach.
Under the old Maroon - Gold - Silver Region set-up, giving away a spot was between Directors. Now we have the regions shifting (started last year) and who gets what to where is predefined by MN HOckey rule. Changing that format is against the rules.
I will have to eamil Tom and Dave.
tschoney- first of all id like to thank you for being so polite after i was so rude. however our view point of the game is much diffrent. moorhead out played roseau for about six minutes in the 2nd period of that game. do you realize that moorhead had 3 shots on net in the third period? how do you out play a team with 3 shots on net? it doesnt matter i should and will give moorhead the credit they deserve (they beat us where it really matters on the score board) however i still stand by what i said i really dont think it will happen a second time. we'll have to wait and see what happens feb. 2nd. im sure we'll end up playing again in regions. as far as that goes roseau and moorhead baring a meltdown should have good chance to advance from their.

When I started this thread, I said it was a different way to look at the peewee A teams. The format I am using allows you to see immediately who will likely be playing in what region. Knowing that, one can then guess on their own who will be in the two from each region to end up in the state tourney. Usually, the winner of the state tourney is rated #1 at the end of the season.watchdog wrote:fred- the subject is or was district play. so whats the need for anything outside of that? i realize that you were making the call befor alot of games were played but it wouldnt take much digging to see the d16 situation. its basically egf trf and roseau with a dark horse in crookston its not even close after that. im not shook up about it were all just talking on here no biggy.
Youth teams, especially peewee teams can develop significantly during a season. I have seen many teams start out poorly only to end well. I have seen the opposite. So over the season, I would expect these ratings to change.
As part of what I do, I try to assess a particular team knowing I can't see them all play, particularly D16 teams that don't travel far. One way to assess them is to see how they perform against teams I have seen. In the Grand Rapids Tourney this week end, I have seen Coon Rapids, Hopkins, Cloquet and Forest Lake play.
I will assess TRF by how they perform against Hopkins (should do well) and against Grand Rapids (if they play them and if they play well against them). This is outside of the D16 play but I think is a good indication how TRF will do in the D16 tourney played at a neutral site. Remember the D16 seeds will be determined by the playoffs in February and I am trying to guess at the D16 teams most likely to emerge from the playoffs with the #1,#2 and #3 seeds.
