I forgot to mention that the honorary captain of this team [in my humble opinion] would be George Pelawa. Bemidji's "Big George" was 6'3" 230# but is reported to have skated and stickhandleed with the best of em. He was selected Mr. Hockey in ’86 and was offered a full ride to NoDak. He was drafted by the Flames , 1st round no less, right out of HS!
Big George never played for the Sioux due to a tragic car accident that took his life that summer. I think it was last year’s State tourney or maybe the Baudette Classic where the media covering the event did a story on George. It was a story I won’t ever forget.

Wrong..but close...my pick would be Johnny Pohl for sure....although Lehrke is an amazing hockey player....hes not the greatest in Minnesota History....maybe 2nd

There’s not a lot of love for Class A hot shots in the history books. Just think what some of the other greats could have done with Pohl's schedule. Nothing against Pohl just a strong, and reasoned, bias for those who compete at the highest possible level.
To ensure that Mr. Pohl receives the credit he is due in the annuals of Minnesota HS Hockey History, I think we can safely say that he would share the title of the “Most Talented Husband and Wife Duo” with his wife Krissy Wendell.

John Mayasich, Eveleth, led his team to 4 consecutive state championships. (1948-51). He was a stud in HS and at the U. Also won silver and gold at the Olympics. (56 & 60) Regarded as the best by many and he's even credited with inventing (or being one of the first) to utilize the slap shot. Google him for a look at some interesting hockey history.
Thats a great list and there are so many more. Mayasich is the KING! I,d like to see Huffer and Plante on that list.
I,d like to add a few more as there have been like was said so many. Heres a few more for yous: Pavelich, Verchota, Baker, Schneider, Harrington. These five were on a pretty special team. If you can,t add him already which I think we can add Niskanen. It will be fun following his career. He,s one of the finest High School players I have ever seen. I have seen some good ones and had the pleasure to play against the 5 I named earlier way back when. There is another 50 at least but I think this thread asks for just one and the farthest back it gos is the 70,s. Mayasich is the King. I may never see a 18 yr old skate like Boucha did. I just love hockey and the State of Hockey is not letting me down again this year. Theres enough D1 prospects in my area to keep me very busy now that my kids have left the roost.
ya you have to put spehar as a high school player only though... he holds the record for career points according to mshsl.org he has 263 (144 goals, 119 assists), 1992-1995
kilpatrick all i have to say ther is WOW and spehar became the poster child for what to look for in a hockey player. finding the net three times a game in the state tourney doesnt make you a hockey player i guess they forgot about that at the u. how about corner work,playmaking,speed,heart,backchecking ie team player? they learned that the hard way.

Much agreed. I'm not sure if anyone could finish quite like the cherry picker, but as an overall player, he should never be ranked among the best.

Bets in the state? I liked these guys but I'm not sure they were the best to come out of AHA. Don't forget Mike Taylor, Kronick, Howells....Eric Johnson only played 2 years.
Since this is best high school player ever, I am not sure that you can use anyones college experience (Spehar) to judge his high school years. Look at it as this player just finished up his high school career yesterday. Anyways, as far as in high school I am very surprised Gino Guyer hasn't been mentioned. Aaron Miskovich was also outstanding. Alex Goligoski was probably the best D in the state during his senior year. He was very fun to watch in HS also. I know these three aren't the best ever, but they deserve mention.
Glen Sonmor - who many would agree is a hockey expert in MN - said the best ever high school player was the great Henry Boucha. Henry went to the NHL - basically out of high school - when there were only 6 teams in the NHL. Not many HS players mentioned in this thread would make the NHL if it were copndensed down to 6 teams now. I think Glen knows what he was talking about.
Glen said the best college player from MN HS was Neal Broten. Can't disagree with that one either.
